Print Your Hardware

Have you ever wondered what all your computer has in terms of hardware? I'm talking about everything from the motherboard to ports to controllers to drives and every other resource your computer uses to help you get your work done. Well, if you've ever wanted a compiled list of that information, today is your lucky day, because that's exactly what I'm going to show you. Let's go!

It's very easy to print out a list of your hardware right through your computer's Device Manager (which is the utility that holds all of the information about the devices, etc. on your computer). To open the Device Manager, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties. From there, click on the Hardware tab and then hit the Device Manager button. You will then see a list of all the services on your system. Now, you must click on one of the items to highlight it. Then just go up to the Action menu and hit Print.

When the print job is done, you will probably have at least two pages, if not more, worth of listings for your computer's hardware information. Depending on your computer, you will probably have a list of your hardware, then a memory summary, a port summary, a system summary and a disk drive summary. Once you're done looking over everything, make sure you keep it in case you ever need to refer back to it. You may want to do a print out of this every so often as well, just so you have an updated list at all times!

You can browse the alphabet and hear how the letters are supposed to sound in your new language - this alone was an eye-opener to me! It also covers various vowel usage and gives you a really good idea of how to pronounce a new word when you see it! Excellent!

Oh, and just wait till you see the lessons! These are fantastic! For example, one of the lessons I was trying allows me to watch and listen to a conversation. Then, the next step took and analyzed each word and phrase so I could learn what was actually said in the conversation. You could even "adjust" the conversation with different phrases! I've never seen it done that way before, but it was really a great way to learn!

Plus, if you hook up a microphone to your computer, you can compare your pronunciation to a native speaker! Just say the word or phrase and the little gauge will show you if you sound like a tourist, native speaker, or somewhere in between. It's an excellent way to test what you've learned!

As if that wasn't enough, just wait till you try the interactive games and puzzles! This really makes learning your new language a blast! You find yourself excited about learning more so you can do better at all the fantastic games and quizzes!

My best recommendation for this software? Here it is - I've been wanting to learn the basic of Spanish now for awhile, but never got to doing it. Well, this software is going to change all that! I was so impressed with it the first time I used it I decided to stick with it and give it a go.

I've been using it for several days now (about a half hour a day) and I'm really getting into it. It's a lot of fun and I'm surprised at how fast I seem to be picking it up. I'm not ready to have a big conversation or anything yet, but I can ask for basic items and fumble my way easy stuff (meet and greet, order at restaurants, ask for bathrooms, communicate the basics at airports, you know, your basic travel scenarios). It's really great and I can't recommend it highly enough!

Do you know anything about a new Web browser called Flock? If so, please scoop us on all the details!

You know, I actually just heard about Flock the other day. I'm always looking for new Web browsers to use and when I heard there was a new one in town, I went and checked it out right away. And all I can say is, it's amazing! First of all, Flock's tag line is "The Social Web Browser" and let me tell you, they really hit the nail on the head with that one. There's so much to go over, so without further ado, I present to you: Flock!

So, tell me, do you use such social networks as Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and so on? If you do, Flock is going to be perfect for you! Basically, Flock's mission is to bring all of your social networks right into your Web browser. With everything integrated together, you're able to have a more fulfilled browsing experience. When using Flock, you're able to stay connected and up to date with all of your favorite networks, as well as, browse the Internet just like you would with any other Web browser.

Here's a direct quote from Flock's Web site that sums their service up quite well: "When using Flock, people can easily discover, access, create and share videos, photos, blogs, feeds and comments across social communities, media providers and popular Web sites." As you can see, you can do just a little bit of everything with Flock!

Here's a quick tip for any readers who love to use the function keys! It turns out the F12 key is very versatile in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Interested in its abilities? Was that a "yes" I heard? Then let's take a look and see what it does!

  • F12 (alone) is the Save As command.

  • Shift + F12 is the Save command.

  • Ctrl + F12 is the Open command.

Now, I realize there are other key combinations that will accomplish these same things, but for those of you who learn better when it all revolves around a single key, this one's for you!

Cutting Down on IM Spam

As you have probably figured out, living in an electronic age has its downsides, with one of them being swamped by unwanted e-mail in our Inboxes. Those who indulge in such an act are called spammers and they are growing by the minute, making our lives much more difficult. There are several different kinds of spam going around the Internet these days, but one of the most recent is instant messenger (IM) spam. What that means is that even if you prefer to be invisible to everyone in an IM program, spammers can get you anyway. Now, even if you can’t completely eradicate such a menace, there are ways of bringing down their frequency. Here are a few simple steps you can follow to secure yourself from this new type of spam brigade!

Yahoo! Messenger

First of all, you need to set your profile to "Adult" and remove yourself from being listed on Yahoo!'s public directory. This is how you do it:

1.) Log in to your profile by visiting this link.

2.) Once you're there, click Sign In and log in using the same username and password you use for Yahoo! Messenger.

3.) Click View My Profiles and then click Edit, located next to your Yahoo! ID.

4.) Next, click Edit Profile Information on the next page. At the bottom of that page, put a checkmark next to the option of "Designate this profile as an adult profile" and uncheck the option that says "Add this profile to the Yahoo! Member Directory."

5.) Click the Save Changes button when you're finished.

How This Strategy Works

When you set your profile to "Adult," spammers will have to physically log in to Yahoo! before they can harm you, so it acts as a good deterrent for spammers. Similarly, taking your profile off the Yahoo! Member Directory will make your profile almost invisible to spammers. And that's exactly what you want to do!

Windows Live/Hotmail/MSN

Based on the same anti-spam principle of Yahoo!, here your job is to change your profile from "Social" to "Just Me." Follow these easy steps to do just that:

1.) Go here and sign in with your Hotmail/MSN/Windows Live e-mail address and password (which is the same as your messenger log in).

2.) Next, click Profiles on the sidebar to your left. Go to the next page and click "Edit your shared profile." Then on the next page, click Social and next to Permissions, click "Anyone on the Internet."

3.) Checkmark the option of "Just Me" and then click the Save button to finish.

All Other Instant Messengers

Pidgin is a cross-platform multi-protocol instant messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once. Pidgin is able to connect to every other chat service that exists in cyberspace. Some of them include AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, ICQ, IRC, MySpaceIM, Sametime and Zephyr, among many others.

Now, what you can do to protect yourself from being spammed over these instant messaging networks is to download Bot Sentry, which you can do right here. Bot Sentry is a Pidgin plug-in that allows you to ignore instant messages (IMs), unless the sender is in your Buddy List, in your Allow List or the sender correctly answers a question you have pre-defined, such as "How do you spell the number five?" If the answer is wrong, such users cannot contact you ever again. This works with all chat services that are connected to Pidgin.

There you have it. I hope this one helps eliminate some of your IM spam problems. Be safe!

(I managed to name 31), "How Geek Are You?" (I’m 80 percent) and some sillier quizzes like: "What Are Your Chances of Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse?" After each quiz, you’ll find the code you need to post your results on your blog, journal or Web site. Just highlight the complete code and then copy and paste it wherever you want to put it.

2. A Method for Effective Meetings
===========================================================
It's Monday morning. Your desk is piled high with tasks
that are overdue. You are feeling pressured to get more
done. Looking at your schedule for the week you see that
most of your time is taken by meetings. Meetings can be
useful but if they are not done properly they can be very
destructive to the company's productivity and revenue.
Here are seven tips that will help you get the most value
out of the meetings you attend. They are guaranteed to
improve your productivity and your effectiveness.


Tip #1 Decide whether or not you really need to hold a
meeting. Meetings can be expensive by the time you consider
the hourly wage of everyone involved. Be careful that you
don't spend a thousand dollars in wages to make decisions
on hundred dollar issues. Recognize that by having employees
attending your meeting they cannot spend their time on other
tasks that directly impact the revenue line. Only invite the
essential personnel to your meeting. Don't have anyone
attending who is not absolutely necessary to reach decisions.
Below is a wages chart. It will help you appreciate the
financial investment you make every time you call a meeting.

A good rule of thumb is to only call for a meeting when
you can double your return on investment. If an issue
can be addressed via email, telephone, or an informal
conference consider choosing one of these alternative
paths.

Tip #2 Decide the best time to hold your meeting. Hold
meetings at a time of day that does not compete with the
time people are most productive at getting their work done.
It is a mistake to schedule meetings in the first few hours
of the day. Those hours should be protected and left clear
for people to get their most important work done. Meetings
should be scheduled later in the morning or in the afternoon.
If you schedule them to run just before lunch break or the
end of the day it will be easier to get the meeting to end
on time.

Tip #3 Decide what outcomes you are after. What is the
specific purpose of the meeting? What objectives are you
trying to achieve? What are the three issues you want to
address? I recommend you keep the meetings short, no longer
than 30 minutes, and only attempt to cover three issues in
each meeting. Only call for a meeting after you are completely
clear on your objectives of the meeting and the three issues
you wish to resolve.

Tip #4 Start the meeting on time no matter who is present.
Don't take time to catch people up on what they missed if they
show up late. Doing so consistently will train your people to
show up on time. The people who are there on time will appreciate
your punctuality. It's a good idea to schedule a meeting for an
odd time of day such as 10:27 instead of 10:30.Call someone to
be a timekeeper in order to keep your meeting on track. Your
agenda should have a time frame of how much time should be spent
on each issue. Rotate this assignment to a different participant
the next meeting. Everyone gets a turn. That hands-on experience is the best way to teach your participants the importance of sticking within the time frame. The time keeper will do a good job because they know they'll have someone else doing the same thing to them one day.

Tip #5 Plan an agenda and make it available to all the
participants a day or two before the meeting is held. The
agenda should include what objectives you hope to achieve
and what the three issues are you hope to explore or resolve.
Prepare your participants with a list of information they
should bring with them and any advance preparation that is
required. During your meeting be sure to stick to your agenda.
If people get side-tracked let them know that their topic is
not within the parameters of this particular meeting. Suggest
that you put their topic in a notebook called the parking lot
to be discussed in a follow up meeting.

Tip #6 During the last 5-10 minutes of the meeting summarize
what was decided. Review assignments given, who the assignments
were given to, and any due dates or deadlines given. Make the
assignments as specific as you can. Document everything in your
meetings minutes for follow up at your next meeting. It is an
excellent idea to send a follow up email to all the participants
with assignment reminders.

Tip #7 Actions you can take if you are not the one who scheduled
the meeting. Don't be afraid to ask for the agenda ahead of time.
Go ahead and ask if the meeting can be shorter, if it is essential that you attend, or if someone can go in your place as your representative. You can shorten a meeting by having a few good recovery lines under your belt. Comments such as Is this a
discussion we all need to be present for? This seems off today's
planned agenda- can we write that in the parking lot notebook to
be discussed at a future meeting? This level of detail would
best be hashed out one-on-one. Of course you'll want to be
careful to keep your own comments concise and relevant.

With today's technology and the speed of life it is easy to
streamline personal interaction to the point it is harmful
to your organization. Go ahead and hold meetings. Just make
sure they are effective meetings that truly make an impact on
your organizations bottom line. Everyone will thank you for
it and you will be amazed at how much more you can get
accomplished.
