Possibility Tips from Kim Romaner: Super Size It!

Possibilities Amplified Home Page | About Kim | Possibilia | The Amp It Up! Blog | Resources
Dear Visitor,

If you watch the National Geographic or Discovery channels, you've probably seen Seth Warren and Tyler Bradt. They are extreme kayakers, and have ridden some of the wildest rivers all over the world, sponsored by kayak and outdoor gear companies.
Now, that's a pretty big vision to have made come true, but for Seth and Tyler, it wasn't big enough. They wanted the endless summer. An endless summer in water sports means that you follow the season around the globe, staying one step ahead of the cold weather along the way. They dreamed of such a trip, but they felt like they needed a better reason to go.

So, follow me here. First, they're taking enormous risks and having some of the most intense physical experiences of their lives all over the world, and getting somebody else to pay for it. But they decide they want more. So they take their dream to the next level, and envision a straight year of kayaking and surfing. But that still isn't enough. They also want to combine their love of fast water with a philanthropic goal. And they finally find the inspiration they need: a friend driving a truck that runs on 100% vegetable oil. They would spend their endless summer kayaking, surfing and--promoting biofuels! Seth and Tyler have been traveling from Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina since July of 2006 without putting a drop of petroleum products in their biofuel-converted firetruck, and educating the populace along the way. You can follow their exploits at http://www.oilandwaterproject.org/.

Now that's a Super Sized vision! And you can Super Size your aspirations as well. If you want to be as famous as Oprah, imagine being more famous than Oprah. If you want a five-bedroom house on a lake with a maid to clean it all, imagine a ten-bedroom house on a private lake with a maid, a butler and chauffer! If you want to be rich, yet only work four hours a day, imagine a business that makes you rich and lets you do anything you want, all day long. The process of stretching the creative imagining of the vision you have of your dream life will help you to expand your dream envelope to a size that encompasses much more of what the universe can really do for you.

Don't be afraid to dream big! Super Size It!
Wishing you every possibility--Kim

Possibility Tips from Kim Romaner: Getting On The Edge

Possibilities Amplified Home Page | About Kim | Possibilia | The Amp It Up! Blog | Resources

Dear Visitor,

Here's something you should know about me: I drive fast. The Florida state police have very extravagant Christmas parties because of me.

Why would I do something so stupid, you might ask? Well, one person's stupid is another person's joy. I love it! I love the concentration it takes, the skill, and the sheer speed of it.

I love it so much, in fact, that this past summer I decided I needed to take my need for speed to the racetrack and amp it up a bit. Fortunately, there's a 3-step program for people like me, and it's called the Richard Petty Driving Experience. In this experience, you get behind the wheel of a NASCAR stock car, and take eight laps at high speed around a professional racetrack. I found myself at the Homestead Miami Speedway, which any NASCAR lover will tell you is a seriously professional track.

Here are the steps: you pay, you train, you drive. You get about an hour of training, which consists of an introduction to the car, the track, and the flags. There are several flags you might get as you race around the track. The one I dreaded most was the rolled up green flag, held snugly in the hand of the flagger, and waved in a circular motion. It means, "get your butt in gear!" I never saw this flag. I also didn't see the flag that told me I wasn't following my instructor closely enough. What I did get was a bunch of wave-offs from my instructor, which means, "you're following too closely." This is good, because it means you are going the right speed. If you drop back just a bit, you're at the perfect following distance.

Four or five wave-offs is great, said our instructor, because it shows you're not afraid of the speed, the track or the car. Ten or eleven wave-offs probably means you have impulse control problems. I managed to control myself, but I can tell you that I wanted to go faster. I thought possibly that they were holding me back because I am a girl, but it more likely had to do with their liability coverage. Even with the instructor controlling my speed, I drove at an estimated top speed of 135 miles per hour, and averaged about 120 around the track. (You have to slow down for those turns.)

I had also decided that I would ride as a passenger before I got behind the wheel myself. The professional driver I rode with took me right up to 165 miles per hour. He stayed right on the wall, so close it seemed impossible that he wouldn't hit it and send us careening across the track in a fiery, out-of-control spin. It scared the pants off me. The track, the wall, and my life all passed before my eyes in a blur. I remember thinking to myself, "You want me to do THIS?? What have I gotten myself INTO??" Maybe I should have taken the ride after I'd driven on the track myself, because it amped up my nervous tension about driving enormously.

Bu maybe not. Because the point of me getting behind the wheel of a stock car and driving it insanely fast was to laugh at my comfort zone, blow out of the envelope, and expand the possibilities. If I truly believe that I am a Possibility Being, I have to act like one. Or more to the point, I get to act like one. I can throw off all the limitations that society/my brain/my mother have imposed on me, and drive as fast as I want. Well, as fast as the track's insurance company will let me.

So my question to you is, what are you doing to get yourself comfortable with being on The Edge? What activities do you have planned for yourself for the specific purpose of increasing your risk tolerance? If you want to innovate your life, Risk Taking 101 is a prerequisite.

When I got off the track that night and headed home, I found myself driving my Acura 3.2 TL with the pedal to the metal and laughing hysterically.

Luckily, no state or local police were in the immediate vicinity. :-)

Wishing you every possibility!
