 | Where Downloads Go Are you constantly downloading programs and putting new items on your computer? If so, have you ever noticed that most of those download files go straight to your desktop? And after you realize that, have you ever wondered why they do that? I mean, why is the desktop such a popular place? Well, in all actuality, the desktop is a pretty common place on a computer. So, the best explanation is, they're sent there so that you'll have an easier time finding them later on. If the file goes directly to the desktop, you don't have to rummage around in your other folders to find the new download. Now, most programs do have a choice included in the download process that allows you to change the place they go to, so if you pay close attention to that, you'll be able to select another location. Also, if you use Firefox as your main Web browser, you can change where your downloads go before they even start. In Firefox, go to Tools, Options and click on the Downloads icon. Click on the button that says "Save all files to this folder" and from there, you can choose your favorite location. The choices they have listed are Desktop and My Downloads, but if you click on Other, you can choose another spot. So, even though it seems like your downloads are controlled, there are ways around them. But, then again, you may like things the way they are. If that's the case, just leave everything as is and you'll be good to go! ~ Erin You can't stop now! There's so much more to read about. Q: A: As a matter of fact, there are a few different things your computer does to back up and save your games. Now, what game it is, when it was made and who made it determines how the game is saved. I'm going to give you a quick list of the different places the games may be stored on your computer. Once you find the folder where the game's data is saved, you can then transfer that information to a CD, an external drive or whatever you use to back up your data. That way, if you ever need to recover a lost game file, etc., you can get it from that location. Okay, here we go! Most game data is saved under your My Documents folder. Once you're in there, look for a folder with the name of your game. It might be under the developer's name as well, so look for that too. If you can't find it there, you may have a My Games folder. If you do, look in there and you'll probably find all your games in an easy to read list. If you still can't find what you're looking for there, you can navigate to the following path to look for it there: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data. (Start out by double clicking on the My Computer icon on your desktop, then open the C: drive and go from there. Also, just so you know, the "user" part should be filled in with your computer's name). Now, if you can't find your games in either of those places, there are still some other locations you can look under. The next best place is in the actual game directory. A lot of them will be stored under the Program Files folder, which can be found under the C: drive as well. Once you get there, look for the name of the game or for the developer's name and you should be able to find it with no problem. If that still doesn't work, there's one more thing you can do. You can right click on the game's icon (it should be on your desktop) and choose Properties. Look for the Shortcut tab and click on the Find Target button to open the folder for that particular game. Also, remember that if you usually play games online (or any game that requires an Internet connection), it's likely those settings will only be saved online and not in your personal folders. In that case, those will not be able to be backed up. Other than that, you should be able to find what you're looking for and again, once you find the game's data, you can save it to a CD or whatever you like to use for your backup purposes. Do You See Stripes? Over the years, I've received a few requests for quick and easy ways to format every other row in MS Excel with a highlighted color. Everyone's tired of completing the formatting manually and I must say, I have to agree! So, as you can imagine, I was quite pleased to find a way to make those formatting changes with just a few clicks in Excel 2007. Do you use Excel 2007? If so, this tip's for you! First, highlight the section of the worksheet you need to format. On the Home ribbon, you're looking for the Format as Table button. (I know you don't want a table, but we'll take care of that in a minute). Select the formatting of your choice. Excel will then confirm that the highlighted range of cells should be converted to a table. Click OK. You'll then be returned to your worksheet, where you'll find that Excel has turned your highlighted range into a table. The header row you see can be removed by unchecking "Header Row" in the Table Style Options section of the Table Tools Design ribbon. Finally, you'll return the cells to a normal worksheet. First, make sure you have a cell of the table selected. Now, click the Convert to Range button (also located on the Table Tools Design ribbon). Voila! Highlighting every other row, without all the manual work! ~ April

Get Comfy! When you sit at your computer for too long, does your back start to hurt? Do your eyes go blurry or do you have various other aches and pains you have to deal with? If so, you're probably wondering what you can change to make your computing a little more comfortable, am I right? Well, read on for some suggestions on how you can do just that! If the work you have to do each day requires you to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time, it's important to handle everything the right way. If you do, you can bypass all those aches and pains that start to linger around. If you've ever had trouble with this or think you might in the future, read on. I've got some important instructions for you today! The first thing you have to look at is the set up of your computer equipment. If you don't have things set correctly, it could really cause you some strain. You need to change everything around to accommodate to the proper body positions. The number one thing is your seating arrangement. Make sure your chair is adjusted so that your feet fit flat (but comfortably) on the floor. Your knees should always bend at a 90 degree angle and your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Next, make sure the back of your chair is adjusted properly. It should be set in such a way that your hips bend at a 90 degree angle and one that gives proper lower back support to you. The next item for discussion is how your mouse and keyboard are set. Make sure they are placed where your hands can be at your elbow height or slightly lower and where your shoulders can relax with your elbows hanging down close to your sides. Your monitor is also a big deal when it comes to comfort. It should be placed on your desk in a position that lines up to or is slightly below your eye level. Make sure you have a straight forward viewing of your screen and ensure that you are at least 16" away from it. Always keep your head upright as well. All of this will help with any eye strain you may get. Now, once you have all of that set in place, you can work on making your computing habits healthy ones. During your day, try to keep a correct posture as much as you can. Although you need to stay comfortable, proper posture helps a lot. Also, make sure you use as little force as possible. When you're typing, you don't need to pound the keyboard. You can get through by just tapping the keys lightly. This will help with any pain you have in your hands. You should also take plenty of breaks throughout the day. Extended computer use can lead to more problems for you at the end of the day. It's said that you shouldn't go over 30 minutes of being at your computer at one time. Get up and stretch every once in awhile or take a short walk around the office. Now, when you stretch, you should watch yourself. Don't bounce, use any jerky moves or stretch so much that it hurts. When stretching, breathe deeply and just straighten your body out until you feel a comfortable limit. Another important factor in comfortable computer use is the lighting around you. If possible, avoid any bright lighting, because it is bad for your eyes. Of course, make sure your lighting is bright enough for you to see what you're doing, but don't overdo it. If your eyes ever get tired, try shutting them tightly for a few seconds and then open them as wide as you can. Repeat this a few times to feel some relief. If you are one of the many who deal with aches and pains everyday after work, you should try some of these exercises as well. With all the typing and clicking you do, it's possible that your hands start to feel a little cramped. To combat this, try spreading your fingers out as far as you can get them and hold for 10 seconds. Do that several times in a row every so often. For your neck, you should turn your head to each side and keep it there for 10 seconds. You can also try tilting your head to each side for a few seconds for some extra comfort. If you have shoulder pain, shrug them forward in a circular motion for several seconds. Do it in the reverse mode (backward) as well. Finally, for your lower back, stand up and put your hands on your hips with your feet shoulder length apart. Lean your hips forward, but push your shoulders back. Hold there and stretch them for 10 seconds or so. Okay, I think that pretty much covers everything. I know this is a bit of a strange tip for today, but if we aren't comfortable while we're using our computers, our work won't be worth anything. They posted a link to a little calendar program I thought was awesome! The program is called Xcalday and it's just a little calendar with a notepad. For each day, you can put in notes about what you need to do, etc. It doesn't seem like much, but trust me, it is very useful! You can download Xcalday for yourself right here. Alright, I’m not really sure why anyone would need to do this, but it is really cool, so I had to share it with you all! This Web site transfers text to speech and you can then download it as an MP3 or iPod file. Cool, huh?! To get started, you will need to register. Don’t worry, it’s free and it only takes a few seconds to do. Once you’re registered, you can log right in and get started. When you’ve logged in, you will notice near the middle of the page, there is a Quick Start guide for you to listen to. That will really help you in getting started and understanding how everything works, so I highly recommend starting there. To start making a recording, click the Create a Recording button or go to the New Recording category on the side menu. Now, choose the person you want to read your text from the drop down box. Next, click the Choose button to have the document transferred from text to speech. Once you’ve found it, choose whether you want to be notified by e-mal when your recording is done, as well as, whether or not you want the recording to be public. Then just click the Record button. All you have to do now is wait for it to be done! I have thought of several great uses for this as I was visiting the site. This would be a great site to use to translate things from text to speech for those individuals who are blind. You could translate e-mails, books and more for them to listen to. This would also be very handy for people who want to record some robotic text for a podcast. I’ve heard that done before and it is hilarious. There's one voice on here that is very robotic and it works perfectly for it! I recommend you do not leave the words per minute at 160. That makes them talk so fast and you can’t really make out what they're saying. If you have any trouble with the site, you may want to check out the FAQ section or the Help Tutorials. They may be able to help you troubleshoot your problem. The Help Tutorials are set up in a blog style and they have an archive, so you’ll probably want to search through them with the search engine in the top right corner of the page. I think this is a very interesting site and it will be neat to see how many uses people have for it as it evolves over time. ADHD alone is difficult to deal with, but ADHD
comorbid (or combined) with ODD creates chaos.
Here is a short description of ODD (oppositional
defiant disorder).
If your child periodically talks back defiantly,
slams doors, acts stubborn, and blows up but has
some control to calm himself down, feel remorse,
and accept consoling and logical explanations,
he does not have ODD.
If your child is hot-headed, gets angry frequently,
loses his temper, is spiteful and vindictive,
deliberately annoys people around him (at home
and school alike), argues with adults, defies you,
and refuses to carry out rules and adults' requests,
be forewarned.
If he is easily annoyed by others and overreacts to
remarks by others, but never owns up to his mistakes
because they are always somebody's fault, this is a
full-fledged kid with ODD.
This is not a phase that will pass. He cannot control
these behaviors. He does not feel remorse for causing
the hurt feelings and chaos in his environment.
He definitely needs treatment and may need additional
medication (beyond what is prescribed for ADHD).

Now for the long version of ODD.
Your child's doctor will look at the Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
(DSM-IV) to diagnose your child.
The following excerpts in quotes are from DSM-IV
Made Easy: The Clinicians Guide to Diagnosis by
James Morrison (1995, p. #516), summarizing the
characteristics of ODD.
"DSM-IV lists ODD as a disorder defined by a pattern
of negativistic, hostile, and defiant behavior
lasting at least six months during which four or
more of the following characteristics are present:
Four times a week (at least):
•Is angry and resentful.
•Annoys people deliberately.
Twice a week (at least):
•Argues with adults.
•Loses temper.
•Defies or refuses to comply with adults' requests
or rules.
•Is touchy or easily annoyed by others.
Has occurred during the last three months:
•Blames others for his or her mistakes or
misbehavior.
•Is spiteful and vindictive.
In addition, the following conditions exist:
•The disturbance in behavior causes clinically
significant impairment in social, academic, or
occupational functioning.
•The behaviors do not occur exclusively during the
course of a psychotic or mood disorder.
•Criteria are not met for conduct disorder, and,
if the individual is age 18 years or older,
criteria are not met for antisocial personality
disorder."

OK, that was the long version.
Remember that up to 65% of kids with ADHD develop ODD.
And it's entirely preventable if you use these methods.
If your child already has it, you cannot cure it,
only minimize it. And I'll show you how to do that soon.
Of children with ADHD, only those with the hyperactive

ODD needs the hyperactive element to develop.
Warning: untreated ODD escalates out of control
quickly. Stick with me to learn how to keep that
from happening.
If you have been practicing the methods explained
in previous reports, you're probably getting some
relief.
That's a good start. You still need some practical
methods for getting your child to honor your requests
the first time. Repeating your requests will only
exhaust you both.
You still need practical methods for structuring your
child's activities to minimize transitions—often rife
with tantrums and misbehavior.
And you still need practical methods for correcting
your child's problem behaviors, for example, biting,
hitting, complaining, arguing, lying, and stealing.
If your child has not been diagnosed, you need a
practical plan for finding a skilled professional
to assess him.
If your child has been diagnosed and you haven't
found a competent therapist, you still need a
practical plan for finding a therapist.

Hi gr8playboy,
I wonder if there is anyone in the world who is
sending out a message, newsletter, or ezine this week
who is not saying, "HAPPY NEW YEAR."
The transition to a new year for me is a bother.
One thing that gives me problems is writing checks.
I keep using the old year in the date.
It soon passes though and I become accustomed to
the change and take it as second nature.

The customer is always right.
That is an old expression, but it is always true. The
problem or blame may be on the customer's side, but
you should never tell them outright.
If it's a problem on their side, just give them the steps to
fix it and be try to be understanding. If the problem is on
your side, do not be afraid to say that you are sorry and
explain the problem if the situation warrants it.
Keeping an existing customer is easier than trying to
find a new customer.

"Autoresponders - Your Number One Marketing Tool"

One of the key tools for anyone wanting to do business
on the World Wide Web is an autoresponder. It also is
one of the most misunderstood tools among those new to
the effort – and sometimes even for those who have been
online for many years.
In its simplest form, autoresponders allow you to
create a fixed message that will go back to anyone who
e-mails a specific address. The most common use for
this is the "I'm away from my office until 29 May and
will not be checking my e-mail until I return" type of
message. Messages of this type can be created within
the control panel of most ISP e-mail servers.
Autoresponders are far more versatile, however. Even
the basic autoresponder that comes with your e-mail
account can be set up to send a document or photo, even
an audio or video file to anyone contacting that
address. This is the most basic form of using an
autoresponder for delivering a product, but it is not
recommended for products you are selling because of the
lack of control. Basically, whatever you are selling
will be delivered to anyone sending an e-mail to that
address – whether they paid for it or not.
Third party autoresponders provide the kind of control
needed for a marketing or sales application. The good
news is there are a number of excellent autoresponders
that can be used at no charge. Those that do have a
fee – whether a one-time purchase fee for a system you
set up on your own server or a monthly/yearly fee for
one you access online – typically are well within the
budgets of nearly anyone trying to do business online.
Perhaps even better news is that autoresponders are not
difficult to set up, even those that offer several
levels of capability across a broad range of possible
applications. The largest and most popular
autoresponders often come with tutorials – some of them
video – that walk you through the set-up process
step-by-step. Many also have user forums or support
systems that will help you if you get stuck.
The possible uses for an autoresponder at this level
are legion. For example, you can set one up to send
out a newsletter to your mailing list on a regular
basis, another to send e-mails advising your list of
special sales, upgrades, new releases or other such
information. Still another autoresponder can deliver
your digital product, along with future patches or
upgrades.
These different tasks actually can be set up using a
single autoresponder, even a single account, depending
on the capabilities of the system you have selected.
Many of the free autoresponders allow you to upgrade to
a fee-based version, with far more capabilities,
without losing anything you already have created.
Anyone who thinks they may someday want to have a
mailing list or sell any kind of product – especially
digital, such as downloadable software or e-books –
should make investigating autoresponders one of their
first and most important tasks. The more you know
about them in advance, the more prepared you will be to
quickly and efficiently get your business online.

"Four Times Married"
An 80 year old lady was being interviewed by the local
news station because she had just gotten married . . .
for the fourth time.
The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about
what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then
about her new husband's occupation.
"He's a funeral director," she answered.
"Interesting," the newsman thought. He then asked her
if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first
three husbands and what they did for a living.
She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect
on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to
her face and she answered proudly, explaining that
she'd first married a banker when she was in her early
20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, later on
a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's, a
funeral director.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and
asked her why she had married four men with such
diverse careers.
She smiled and explained "I married one for the money,
two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go!"

Computer Tips [ Watch Your Security Settings + Find Lost Email Addresses + Print Your Grids ] 01/02/08

| Click to Activate I'm sure most of you have run into this little predicament before, but just in case you haven't or if you're not sure what to do when it does happen, this tip should help! If a Web site you're trying to look at has some sort of flash animation included with it, you might receive a pop up message that says something like "Click to activate and use this control." This usually only happens on sites that have videos, etc. that you're trying to view. If a site uses any of the following programs, you will more than likely receive that message: Adobe Flash Player (this is the most common one), Authorware Player, Shockwave Player, Adobe Reader, Sun Java, Apple QuickTime, RealNetworks RealPlayer and a few other ActiveX controls. The active content that is embedded within the HTML pages on certain Web sites will not do anything until you click the page with your mouse. Clicking it then activates the content and it is able to continue the download. This issue started awhile back with an update for Internet Explorer 6. It was expected for most Web page developers who were a part of this problem to redo their sites so that the users wouldn't have to click every time just to see certain pages. Unfortunately, not all developers have done that, so you may still run into this every now and then. When you do, just click once like it tells you to and you will be able to see the content. It's a little annoying, but it's not a huge problem. It's just a good idea to at least be aware of it in case you ever come across it in the future! ~ Erin Don't stop now! Q: A: To do this in Outlook Express, go to Tools and open your Address Book. Now, click on the New icon and choose New Group. Make a name for your particular group and type it in. Next, click on the Select Members button. This will bring up all the names you have stored in your address book. You can then highlight each name you want to be placed in the group. For example, you have a card club and you want Mary, Betty, Judy, Ann, Nadene and Lisa in that group. Find their e-mail addresses and hit the Select button after each one. (You can also use Shift + a mouse click to highlight them all at the same time). Either way, click on the Select button to get all the names in the group. After you're done, their names will appear under the Members panel. Click OK twice and your group's name will show up in the left Contacts pane. When you want to e-mail that group, open up a new message like normal, go to Tools, Select Recipients. That will bring up a list of all your contacts and you can scroll through them to find your group's name. Highlight the group name, hit the To: button and OK. This will then bring your group's name into the To: section of your e-mail. It won't show everyone's e-mail address in a line like usual, but all the addresses are embedded within the group name. Where's That Located on the Printout? Ever wish you had your gridlines, column letters and row numbers on the printout of an MS Excel worksheet? On some of the larger worksheets or on worksheets where there aren't a lot of labels on the data, this tip could be the little "miracle" you've been looking for. Okay, maybe the word miracle is a bit strong, but then again, it all depends on how lost you've become in your data. It's all in the perspective! I know sometimes I just have to see it in print to find the mistakes. If only that would ensure I could catch them all. I don't know about you, but some days, my mistake list seems endless! At any rate, once you've made the decision that you need your gridlines and/or headings, your solution is just a few clicks away. For people using older versions of Excel, your solution is found in the Page Setup information. So, we'll begin by going to the File menu, Page Setup choice. Once the Page Setup window opens, you're looking for the Sheet tab. In the middle section, called Print, you're looking for the Gridlines and Row and Column Headings checkboxes. Make sure you select the items you need. Click OK. For Excel 2007 users, you need the Page Layout ribbon. Check the Print box for Headings and/or Gridlines as necessary. There you have it. All the labels and gridlines you could ever want! Now, you know where to find everything! ~ April

You don't need to keep popping up the Help menu every two minutes. I really, really love this feature! When it comes to being user friendly, this truly sets a new standard. Lost E-mail Addresses Another reader asks: I lost some of the e-mail addresses for my friends and family. How can I find them again? Unfortunately, we have all lost an e-mail address at some point or another. Isn't it just the pits?! I know it has happened to me several times and I just go crazy over finding it again. So, if your e-mail address book somehow got deleted or if you just flat out lost your list of contacts, what can you do? Do you just stop e-mailing those people forever? No, don't do that! Try the following tips before you ever go that far. One of the best ways to go about recovering e-mail addresses is to just ask. You can ask the actual person or if you feel bad for losing their address, ask around to other friends and family members to see if they know the e-mail address you're looking for. Or, if you misplaced a co-worker's address, ask the other people you work with. Someone is bound to know and they can just forward the information to you. If you can't really use that method, start looking through your saved e-mails. Chances are, you saved an e-mail from the person whose address you lost and you can just find the old e-mail and copy it down. Also, try looking through your sent e-mails. Most e-mail programs save sent e-mails for quite awhile and you may be able to locate the missing address from one of those. See, there are ways around these things! Also, if the person has their own personal Web site or if they run a blog (or something similar), they may have their e-mail address listed there. You can just go there and copy down the address. It doesn't hurt to at least try! Now, if you're looking for an e-mail address of an old classmate or someone who never even gave you their address, you may want to try a classmates Web site and search by their name. You may have better results that way. You can also try searching by their real name on a "people search" Web site. Sometimes people include their e-mail addresses along with the rest of their contact information. If you're lucky, you might be able to find it that way. I've got one more for you! Did you know that you can add e-mail addresses to your favorites in a Web browser? Well, you can. Read here to learn how. Too Much Security? Everyone knows that securing your computer is important these days. Without securing your system and network, you can run into all kinds of problems. On the other hand, there is such a thing as too much security. If your computer is overly secure, you will lose functionality and your computer will become more of a pain than anything else. Here are a few things that can cause you computer trouble from being too secure! Too Much Antivirus – When it comes to damaging computers, viruses are the king. When your computer has a virus, you can see anything from performance problems to identity theft results. While it is important to have good antivirus software, you should never have more than one antivirus suite running on your system at once. Having more than one type of antivirus software can cause them to malfunction, leaving you with no protection. Too Many Firewalls – Along with an antivirus program, firewalls are very similar. A good firewall is important, but having more than one can cause major issues. Since firewall software is designed to close ports and seal shut your system, overlapping two of them can cause them to block each other and leave you with Internet connectivity troubles. Security Settings Set Too High – I'm sure most of you have looked at Internet Explorer's security settings at one point in time (you can look at them now by clicking Tools, Internet Options, Security tab). Those settings have a range from low to high. Most of you will see that your computer is set to medium or medium high. That is perfectly fine. While IE does have the option for high, you will see that setting your system that way will not help you at all. When your browser security is set too high, it blocks almost everything. You will not be able to see most Web sites and the ones you can see, will be missing items. Privacy Settings Set Too High – Right next to the Security tab in Internet Explorer, you'll find the Privacy tab. That tab mostly controls your cookie settings. Keeping control of your cookies is a good thing, but not having any cookies is just as bad. If you set your privacy settings to the highest setting, your browser will not allow any cookies into your system. Therefore, many Web sites will not work for you. So, be prepared to fully explore these monuments and statues from all over the U.S. You know, this would make a great road trip if you wanted to visit all the large items by state!
