 | Firefox 3 Update It's been a few days since I've told you anything about Firefox 3, so I figured I'd give you a quick update today! I know a lot of you are avid Firefox users, so I'm sure you're anxious to hear all about what's been going on with it in the last week or so. As I'm sure you know, the Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) was released on May 16, 2008 and it is currently available for download. The Mozilla company released it to the public in order to get feedback on it and if you helped out with that, you're very much appreciated! Since Mozilla has been getting so much good feedback for the RC1, they're saying the final version should be released sometime in June 2008. (I'll wait here while you do your happy dance!) Mozilla vice president Mike Schroepfer said more than 1.5 million people downloaded the Firefox 3 RC1 and they're now just working on going through all of the feedback they have received. He said they're also in the stage of letting the add ons update so that they'll be all ready for the final release. Along with that though, Schroepfer said more release candidates are possible, especially since Firefox 2 had three. "We're in better shape this time, but there's no reason to rush this," he said. All in all, it sounds like the Mozilla team is working very hard to get Firefox 3 up and running and really, either way you look at it, you're going to be enjoying a brand new Firefox Web browser in no time at all. I don't know about you, but that makes me want to smile all day long! ~ Erin Here's a happy, happy Friday to you all! Make sure you keep reading to learn all about hot swappable devices and how they can benefit you, find out how you can get on the Page Setup Express in MS Word and learn how to scrub up your Windows Vista files and make them clean again. Also, be sure to check out the Friday Funnies for your daily laugh and as always, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day. Enjoy and have a fabulous weekend, everyone! : ) YES! Q: Can you please explain what hot swappable means? A: Excellent question! I don't think anyone has ever asked this before, so I'm very glad you brought it up. I'm guessing a few of you have heard of the term "hot swappable" before, but I'm willing to bet not many of you know what it means. To be honest, I didn't even really know what it meant until I did a little research for this tip. I mean, I had heard of it before, but I guess I didn't know what all it entailed. But now I do and I'm going to share all the information with you. So, come along with me as we learn all about this brand new term! In this day and age, it's very important for computers and other electronic devices to be as user friendly as possible and with that, more and more devices are being made with hot swappable capabilities. Basically, a hot swappable device is one that can be added or removed from a computer without having to reboot. USB devices are probably the most well known for being hot swappable, but there are several others as well. Let's take a USB flash drive as an example. Most flash drives already have all the software they need built right in to them, so when you plug a flash drive into one of your USB ports, your computer is able to automatically recognize it as new hardware. In addition, you're able to start working with the flash drive right away, without having to download any software or drivers. All in all, if a device is able to begin functioning immediately after you plug it into your computer, it is considered to be hot swappable. Like I said earlier, there are several hot swappable items on the market today. There are flash drives, printers, digital cameras, scanners, Webcams, microphones and many, many more. The hot swappable functionality is beneficial in that it allows you to work much faster without interruptions and with ease. I mean, if you had to restart your computer every time you wanted to use a new device, you'd be wasting a lot of time and you'd probably become very frustrated. I know I would! You can also use most hot swappable devices on other computers. For instance, if you have more than one computer in your home, you can use your flash drive on both PCs without any trouble. All hot swappable devices work exactly the same in that no matter which computer you use, they will always work for you automatically. And if you really think about it, that saves you some money as well, because you don't have to go out and buy new hardware for every computer you use. Many businesses use hot swappable items as well. So, if you're looking to buy a new flash drive or printer, etc., check it to make sure it is hot swappable. If you buy all of your hardware that way, you will save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration. And that just makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it?! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: http://www.worldstart.com/submitquestion.htm The Page Setup Express When using MS Word, do you like the display to include the rulers (View menu, Rulers choice or in Word 2007, they're found on the View ribbon, Show/Hide section?) I know I do, because it really helps me to see them as I work. The convenience of tab stops and margins constantly displayed in such a small space is something I just can't do without. Well, as it turns out, the rulers you're used to looking at were hiding a secret! Yep, they're your quick ticket to the Page Setup window. No menus, no key combinations to remember, just a quick double click and you're right there in the Page Setup window! I'm completely serious! Even in Word 2007, that's all there is to it. A double click on one of the rulers will instantly pop open the Page Setup window. It's as fast as having an actual button designated to take you there. One more thing: you do need to remember that a single click on the bottom half of the horizontal ruler will insert a tab stop. To avoid tab stops you don't really want to create (due to slow double clicking), either use the top half of the horizontal ruler, the unused portions beyond the horizontal ruler or the vertical ruler for this tip. Other than that, this double click trick seems to be an express train straight to the Page Setup! ~ April Awesome Savings! 2 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Just $14.97!! WOW!!! WOW! For example, your digital camera records data about when a picture was taken and what camera was used. Your documents and spreadsheets contain details about who created them and your music files are tagged with artist and album information. And the list can go on and on. So, with all of that information widely known on your computer, it's wise to clean them up a bit every once in awhile. That's right, it's time to give your Windows Vista files a scrub down! To "scrub" a file of unwanted metadata in Vista, simply follow these steps: 1.) Open the file you want to clean in Windows Explorer. 2.) Right click on the file's icon and choose Properties. 3.) Under the Details tab, click Remove Properties and Personal Information. That will then open the Remove Properties dialogue box: At this point, you have two choices. The default option creates a copy of your file (using the original file name with the word "copy" appended to it) and removes all the properties it can change, based on the file type. Or, you can choose the second option, which selectively removes the properties from the file. If you see a checkbox next to a property, you can erase that property's current content. If there's no checkbox, the data is non-removable. Make sure you use common sense when you're making your choice. The second option zeroes out the metadata, but it does nothing with the contents of the file itself. Therefore, the first option may be your best bet. Just take some time to think about all the files you have on your computer and what sort of information they may contain. Then scrub them up as you deem necessary.
