Computer Tips [ Watch Your Security Settings + Find Lost Email Addresses + Print Your Grids ] 01/02/08

Quick Tips

Click to Activate

I'm sure most of you have run into this little predicament before, but just in case you haven't or if you're not sure what to do when it does happen, this tip should help! If a Web site you're trying to look at has some sort of flash animation included with it, you might receive a pop up message that says something like "Click to activate and use this control."

This usually only happens on sites that have videos, etc. that you're trying to view. If a site uses any of the following programs, you will more than likely receive that message: Adobe Flash Player (this is the most common one), Authorware Player, Shockwave Player, Adobe Reader, Sun Java, Apple QuickTime, RealNetworks RealPlayer and a few other ActiveX controls. The active content that is embedded within the HTML pages on certain Web sites will not do anything until you click the page with your mouse. Clicking it then activates the content and it is able to continue the download.

This issue started awhile back with an update for Internet Explorer 6. It was expected for most Web page developers who were a part of this problem to redo their sites so that the users wouldn't have to click every time just to see certain pages. Unfortunately, not all developers have done that, so you may still run into this every now and then. When you do, just click once like it tells you to and you will be able to see the content. It's a little annoying, but it's not a huge problem. It's just a good idea to at least be aware of it in case you ever come across it in the future!

You're Gonna Love Hanging Pictures!!

No More Hammers, No More Nails!

WOW!

Easily Hang Mirrors, Pictures, Shelves, etc!

Just Position, Twist and Turn!!!

I am SOOOO excited! This has got to be one of the best items we have come across in quite awhile! What's so great about it? Oh, this is just gonna blow you away!

These amazing Super Hooks are extremely easy to use, and don't require any tools! How great is that? I tried these at home over the weekend to hang some new pictures and I am nothing short of AMAZED! I wish I would have had these years ago! I didn't need a hammer or a nail and it took less than 5 minutes from start to finish (it might have even been 3 minutes ;-).

Here's how easy they are to use:

Simply pick a spot on the wall where you want to hang your picture (shelf, mirror, etc.) ~ no need to find a stud in the wall first either ;-)

Using the pointy end of the hook, twist back and forth (like you would a key) until you've made a nice little notch in the wall.

Push the Super Hook through and upward so just the end of the hook is showing.

Hang your picture, artwork, mirror, etc. - viola!, you're done!!!

These work great on drywall, plaster or paneling and are perfect for the home or office. They only leave a tiny hole when removed so there's very little repair needed if you change your mind and need to reposition something. A little squirt of caulk and you're good to go! This is really helpful if you rent and don't want a lot of expensive repair work when you move.

I can't believe how great these are to use! We just moved to a new house and I'm thrilled I haven't really started hanging pictures yet! I'm grabbing some of these and getting the job done FAST!

Oh, I forgot to tell you, this is a set of 20 Super Hooks so you've got plenty for every room in the house - get ready to redecorate - it's easy!

The price on these is really great too! Your cost is just $10.97 for a set of 20 Super Hooks! And that includes FREE shipping in the US! This is one great deal you don't want to miss out on! Check em out here:

A Must-Have - Just Awesome!!

You Gotta Try This!! :-)

This is so cool! We have this absolutely awesome hand-held Sudoku game with a bonus "Sudoku For Dummies" guide! Oh, and this is by far the very best Sudoku game I've ever run across!

First off, this package includes an absolutely fantastic hand-held Sudoku game that's loads of fun to play! It great for both experienced players and those who are just beginning! It has a whopping 30 levels of "undos" so if you're just learning, you can easily go back and retry - a great way to learn!

Of course, if you're more experienced, you can play more difficult games and even create you very own Sudoku boards! It's just fantastic and the little game unit is ideal size to take along with you on trips! Beats staring out the windows at corn fields all day as you drive!

Plus this also includes a super little guidebook called Sudoku For Dummies that's just terrific! I'm not a really good Sudoku player (OK, I'm a terrible player, but hey, I try), but this book really helped me along! I never thought I would enjoy the game this much, but now, WOW! It's actually really fun (and frighteningly addictive too)!

Q:
I often send all my e-mails to the same group of people. Is there an easier way to do that rather than typing their addresses out each time? Any advice you have would be great. Thanks!

A:
Excellent question. All you need to do is group it! If you usually send the same e-mails to the same group of people, you can make it easier by creating a group for them. With group e-mailing, you don't have to search again and again for each person you want to send an e-mail to. Maybe you're in a club and you want to e-mail every club member. Put them all in a group and save yourself some time! Maybe you send certain e-mails only to your family members. Make a group for them and so on!

To do this in Outlook Express, go to Tools and open your Address Book. Now, click on the New icon and choose New Group. Make a name for your particular group and type it in. Next, click on the Select Members button. This will bring up all the names you have stored in your address book. You can then highlight each name you want to be placed in the group. For example, you have a card club and you want Mary, Betty, Judy, Ann, Nadene and Lisa in that group. Find their e-mail addresses and hit the Select button after each one. (You can also use Shift + a mouse click to highlight them all at the same time). Either way, click on the Select button to get all the names in the group.

After you're done, their names will appear under the Members panel. Click OK twice and your group's name will show up in the left Contacts pane.

When you want to e-mail that group, open up a new message like normal, go to Tools, Select Recipients. That will bring up a list of all your contacts and you can scroll through them to find your group's name. Highlight the group name, hit the To: button and OK. This will then bring your group's name into the To: section of your e-mail. It won't show everyone's e-mail address in a line like usual, but all the addresses are embedded within the group name.

You can then type out your e-mail and send it off. All your group members will receive it and it will save you a ton of time. Give it a try today!

MS Office

Where's That Located on the Printout?

Ever wish you had your gridlines, column letters and row numbers on the printout of an MS Excel worksheet?

On some of the larger worksheets or on worksheets where there aren't a lot of labels on the data, this tip could be the little "miracle" you've been looking for. Okay, maybe the word miracle is a bit strong, but then again, it all depends on how lost you've become in your data. It's all in the perspective!

I know sometimes I just have to see it in print to find the mistakes. If only that would ensure I could catch them all. I don't know about you, but some days, my mistake list seems endless!

At any rate, once you've made the decision that you need your gridlines and/or headings, your solution is just a few clicks away.

For people using older versions of Excel, your solution is found in the Page Setup information. So, we'll begin by going to the File menu, Page Setup choice.

Once the Page Setup window opens, you're looking for the Sheet tab.

In the middle section, called Print, you're looking for the Gridlines and Row and Column Headings checkboxes.

Make sure you select the items you need.

Click OK.

For Excel 2007 users, you need the Page Layout ribbon.

Check the Print box for Headings and/or Gridlines as necessary.

There you have it. All the labels and gridlines you could ever want!

Now, you know where to find everything!

~ April

Great Deals From Our Store...

You've NEVER Seen A Print Program Like This Before!

Fast, Fun and Easy-to-Use!

One-of-a-kind project ideas are just a click away...

WOW - we've featured some pretty good print project software before but I gotta tell you, this one here is nothing short of FANTASTIC!

I've used dozens (and dozens) of print programs in the past and many of them do the same things and most are pretty capable and get the job done. Now, that's where PrintMaster Platinum 17 draws ahead of the competition! It does much more than most print programs and it's all so easy, even computer novices or those that don't have the creative "gene" will become a desktop publishing master in no time at all!

PrintMaster Platinum 17 has so many great features, it would take me hours (and way more space than I'm given here in the newsletter) to list and describe them all for you! But I'm going to give it a shot though, and I'll try to keep it as brief as possible. Here's a list of some of the projects you can create:

Banners
Bookmarks
Business Cards
Calendars
Cards
CD Labels
Certificates
Coupons
Crafts
Customizable iPod Skins
3D Craft Sets
Invitations
Iron-Ons
Letterheads
Menus
Newsletters
Notecards
Photo Projects
Postcards
Posters
Recipe Cards
Webpages
Animated Greetings
Scrapbooks

To get you started with all of these projects, you get OVER 20,000 professionally designed templates, 295,000+ high-quality images and 600+ fonts ~ right at your fingertips! I'm telling you, even in you don't have a creative bone in your body, you can create, design, personalize, print and share all of these projects with your friends and family in just a matter of minutes!

What I really LOVE about this version is the Help Menu that's included! It starts out with the very basics so if you are completely new to desktop publishing, you can work your way through this gradually with all the help you need. Just need some creative ideas? That's ok too - you can jump around in the Help Menu to exactly what you are looking for. You can get tips on such things as layout & design, color choices, typestyles, mail merge, photo effects, etc. The list is huge - I found myself completely absorbed just reading all the tips they have to offer, it's incredibly helpful! Here's just a couple to give you an idea:

Each of these Help sections contain written directions and tips as well as pictures so you can print them out to refer back to while you're working. You don't need to keep popping up the Help menu every two minutes. I really, really love this feature!

When it comes to being user friendly, this truly sets a new standard. It not only gives you excellent help along the way, but has lots of built-in tutorials to get you started. Plus there's really no learning curve - just get in and start using it. Don't you wish all software was that easy?

Oh, and just wait till you see how great the printing features are! All the projects you print from this program really look like you got them from a store (better actually) - it's great!

PLUS, this also has a really handy photo editor as well! You can do simple stuff like cropping, redeye removal to more complex operations like artistic filters! Just this feature is worth the price of the program!

In short (well, maybe not so short), I'm extremely impressed with how well this program is put together, how simple it is to use, and the incredible number of project templates it includes. I can't recommend it highly enough! But wait, it's not just me - this program was rated #1 and given the Gold Award for 2008 by Top Ten Reviews! It really is that good!

But, here's something that's even better ~ this program is currently retailing for $39.95 and higher but we have got such a great deal on it and love it so much, we're able to offer this to you all today for just $18.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US! Oh ya, I almost forgot, if you order today you'll also get FREE Customizable iPod Skins and a BONUS CD (ArcSoft Photo Manager & Fun Editing Tools) included with your order - now come on, you've just got to check this out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=3967

PS - This is brand new for us and has been extremely hard to get ~ please don't wait to order if you want on in this great deal! Quantities are very limited so be sure to get yours ordered right away!

AWESOME!!!

Mousepad Speakerphone With Calculator and Alarm!!!!

The Coolest Mousepad You've Ever Seen!

What A Great Idea!!

Ohhhhh do I have a cool one for you today! Ever see a gadget and think, "Gee I wish I would have thought of that!"? Well, this is one of those times for me! This is just the best idea I've seen in a long time!

First off, this is a really great mousepad. It's comfortable, feels good, the mouse tracks really (really) well on it. Everything you could ever want in a mouse pad!

However, not content to be just another mousepad, this one takes it to the next level by doubling as a handy speakerphone! How cool is that?? Instead of having to get up and run around trying to find the phone while you work, just answer your great sounding speakerphone!

Oh, and it's not just some run-of-the-mill phone either! Nope, this really does it right! It has caller ID and a HUGE phone book that can remember up to 110 different names and numbers! WOW!! Just select who you want to call and dial away! Oh, and the caller ID remembers the last 90 numbers AND you can scroll through the incoming calls and dial them back at the push of a button!

Still want more! OK!!! The keypad also doubles as a calculator! Now I LOVE this! If I had a dime for everytime I needed a calculator at my desk, well, I'd be sitting on a beach somewhere instead of telling you about this amazing little speakerphone mousepad!

PLUS this also features a fantastic built in clock and alarm! I usually pick my daughter up from school (mostly because she's spoiled) but unfortunately for her, there are days I loose track of time. Well, I have my little alarm set to go off and remind me to get off the computer and run to the school! What a fantastic idea - and it's built right in!

Still not enough? Well, wait till you hear this! It comes with a whopping 48 ring tones and even 16 different hold melodies! Told ya this was the coolest mousepad you've ever seen! I absolutely love it!

Whew, OK now for the price. These are just $22.97 and US shipping is FREE! You usually can't even get a good phone for that kind of money, much less one that does all this! Check it out, you'll love it as much as I do!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4020

PS - The bad news is that this is another one-time buyout and a VERY limited quantity deal. This is just the coolest idea I've seen for a desktop in ages and I know I absolutely LOVE mine! We're down to the last couple dozen so e sure to get your order in right away!

Tip of the Day

Lost E-mail Addresses

Another reader asks: I lost some of the e-mail addresses for my friends and family. How can I find them again?

Unfortunately, we have all lost an e-mail address at some point or another. Isn't it just the pits?! I know it has happened to me several times and I just go crazy over finding it again. So, if your e-mail address book somehow got deleted or if you just flat out lost your list of contacts, what can you do? Do you just stop e-mailing those people forever? No, don't do that! Try the following tips before you ever go that far.

One of the best ways to go about recovering e-mail addresses is to just ask. You can ask the actual person or if you feel bad for losing their address, ask around to other friends and family members to see if they know the e-mail address you're looking for. Or, if you misplaced a co-worker's address, ask the other people you work with. Someone is bound to know and they can just forward the information to you.

If you can't really use that method, start looking through your saved e-mails. Chances are, you saved an e-mail from the person whose address you lost and you can just find the old e-mail and copy it down. Also, try looking through your sent e-mails. Most e-mail programs save sent e-mails for quite awhile and you may be able to locate the missing address from one of those. See, there are ways around these things!

Also, if the person has their own personal Web site or if they run a blog (or something similar), they may have their e-mail address listed there. You can just go there and copy down the address. It doesn't hurt to at least try!

Now, if you're looking for an e-mail address of an old classmate or someone who never even gave you their address, you may want to try a classmates Web site and search by their name. You may have better results that way. You can also try searching by their real name on a "people search" Web site. Sometimes people include their e-mail addresses along with the rest of their contact information. If you're lucky, you might be able to find it that way.

I've got one more for you! Did you know that you can add e-mail addresses to your favorites in a Web browser? Well, you can. Read here to learn how. That is just one more easy way to keep track of all the e-mail addresses you have.

Well, there you go. Hopefully one of these suggestions will help you find your missing e-mail addresses so that you can resume contact with the ones you love!

Today's Feature

Too Much Security?

Everyone knows that securing your computer is important these days. Without securing your system and network, you can run into all kinds of problems. On the other hand, there is such a thing as too much security. If your computer is overly secure, you will lose functionality and your computer will become more of a pain than anything else. Here are a few things that can cause you computer trouble from being too secure!

Too Much Antivirus – When it comes to damaging computers, viruses are the king. When your computer has a virus, you can see anything from performance problems to identity theft results. While it is important to have good antivirus software, you should never have more than one antivirus suite running on your system at once. Having more than one type of antivirus software can cause them to malfunction, leaving you with no protection.

Too Many Firewalls – Along with an antivirus program, firewalls are very similar. A good firewall is important, but having more than one can cause major issues. Since firewall software is designed to close ports and seal shut your system, overlapping two of them can cause them to block each other and leave you with Internet connectivity troubles.

Security Settings Set Too High – I'm sure most of you have looked at Internet Explorer's security settings at one point in time (you can look at them now by clicking Tools, Internet Options, Security tab). Those settings have a range from low to high. Most of you will see that your computer is set to medium or medium high. That is perfectly fine. While IE does have the option for high, you will see that setting your system that way will not help you at all. When your browser security is set too high, it blocks almost everything. You will not be able to see most Web sites and the ones you can see, will be missing items.

Privacy Settings Set Too High – Right next to the Security tab in Internet Explorer, you'll find the Privacy tab. That tab mostly controls your cookie settings. Keeping control of your cookies is a good thing, but not having any cookies is just as bad. If you set your privacy settings to the highest setting, your browser will not allow any cookies into your system. Therefore, many Web sites will not work for you.

Those are just a few things to keep in mind. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends. But not too safe! : )

What’s Large Where: By State

I find huge sculptures and odd buildings interesting, so when I stumbled across this Web site, I couldn’t help but share it with you. What you will find here is a big list of what is large in the U.S.A.!

The listing is in alphabetical order, starting with Alabama and ending with Wyoming. You’ll notice some of the postings have links done in yellow. If you click those links, you will be taken to a page that either has more information about the monument or has both more information and pictures of the monument.

Some of my favorites are the giant otter in Minnesota, the largest Kokopelli in Arizona, the largest Pez dispenser in California and the largest popcorn ball in Iowa. There are a lot of really neat ones, so it was hard to pick just a few!

I got lost here just looking through all of the pictures for a good hour. So, be prepared to fully explore these monuments and statues from all over the U.S. You know, this would make a great road trip if you wanted to visit all the large items by state!

Are you ready to go visit them? I know I can’t wait to get back to exploring them. There are 17 large monuments in Ohio alone. Go explore!
