February 2008 Windows Updates With it now being three days after the release of the February 2008 Windows Updates, I figured most of you have already updated your computers and we can talk a little bit about what has changed. I also wanted to take this time to clear up any confusion you may have about some of this month's updates. I've been getting a lot of questions in my e-mail about it, so it's definitely something I want to address today. So, without further ado, let's take a look and see what we've got! According to Microsoft's security bulletin, posted on February 12, 2008, they have fixed 17 flaws in 11 patches, with six of those being classified as "critical." The other five were placed under the "important" category. Now, most of the critical updates dealt with MS Office programs, so if you don't have all of those installed on your computer, you probably didn't see as many updates come through. Some of the programs hit the hardest were Microsoft Word, Works, Publisher and Visual Basic 6. Another on the critical side included a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. On the other hand, most of the important updates dealt with Internet services, including one for Windows Vista and its SP1, which is supposed to be released in mid to late March 2008. Although that's an important update, you won't have to worry too much about it until the full version is finally released. Now, there's one more thing I want to talk about and that has to do with Internet Explorer 7. Awhile back, I told you an upgrade for IE 7 would be included with this month's updates and that you would be required to install it. Well, I must have been wrong, because it wasn't on the list. So, I guess if you're still in love with IE 6, you can rest easy for at least another month. I'll keep you posted on any other changes regarding the Internet Explorer browser, but until then, go on and enjoy your February updates. They're all yours! ~ Erin Here's a happy, happy Friday to you all! Make sure you keep reading to learn all about locating your computer's modem and finding the information you need from it, find out how to get a new worksheet in MS Excel in a jiffy and learn all about how Gmail can protect you from phishing scams. Also, be sure to check out this week's Friday Funnies for your daily laugh and as always, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day. Enjoy and have a fabulous weekend, everyone! : )

Q: A: It's fairly easy to look up the type of modem you have in your computer. You just have to follow a few steps. Note: These steps are for Windows 98, 2000 and XP only. Okay, let's get started! First, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories. In that section, look for the System Information folder. XP users will have to click on System Tools and then System Information. Once you're there, click on the + (plus sign) next to the option of Components and then click on Modem. A whole page of information will come up on the right hand side, telling you such things as the name of your modem, a description, the provider's name, different compressions and controls, speaker modes, tones, memory address, ports, channels and more. It's amazing how much information you can get about your modem by following those few simple steps. You can also get information about your modem by actually looking at your modem. You should be able to find certain information, such as the name, manufacturer, model number, speeds, etc. If you ever have to call tech support about your modem, this sort of information is good to know ahead of time. That way, you don't have to take time to look for it while you're on the phone. If possible, know the manufacturer of your modem, the type, the model and the speed. It will read something like PCI 3COM 96k modem. That's all there is to it. Now you know all there is to know about your computer's modem! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? WOW! This is STILL just flying out of the door! We've had an overwhelming response to this incredible software! Thank YOU to the hundreds and hundreds - heck, nearly 1000, who have grabbed this one! Don't miss out! Install this, and you'll never look back! Kiss MS Office Good-Bye!! Amazing New Office Software You Gotta See To Believe! It's Like MS Office For Just $12.97! Wow - we just keep sellin' Office Suite 2007! Hey, I don't blame ya - it's an incredible piece of software that really makes it insane to ever spend $400-$800 on MS Office. After using it for a few days, you'll wonder why anyone would ever spend the big bucks on MS Office! I tell ya - this is nothing short of FANTASTIC! I'm using it on a regular basis and it's been just great! I can't believe how impressed I continue to be with this software! I mean, it just has soooo much for such a small price! The power and ease of use is just phenomenal! For price and ease of use, this just really blows MS Office right out of the water! What do you get? Well, EVERYTHING! This includes an absolutely fantastic word processor, a spreadsheet program on steroids (it just stomps Excel), presentation software that's second to none, an incredible drawing program, an advanced calculating program, and even a souped-up, high-end database! It can even create PDFs with the push of a button from most applications! WOW! To get even close to that with MS office you'd be looking at a small fortune! I was using the the other day with a friend and for the first half-hour he thought we were using MS Office. Finally he looked at it a little closer and said, "Hey - what program is this?" I told him about it - and how inexpensive it was - and he was blown away! He couldn't believe that you could get a program like this for less than $15!! In fact, at first he thought I was kidding around. Well, he's got a few on the way for himself now! Why shell out $400 - $800 for MS Office when you can get this for a small fraction of the cost? I know we're going to be using it here at the office when we have a new computer arrive. We used to shell out $400+ just so we could use Word and Excel! This is actually BETTER and the low cost is just unreal! The 2 of the main components are a top notch Word Processor and a Spreadsheet Program. Both look a LOT like MS Word and MS Excel - in fact, if you just open it up and ignore the title bar, you'd swear that you were using an improved version of MS Office! It's THAT good. Oh, and like I said, this also comes with a phenomenal presentation program, drawing program, database and MORE! The really cool thing is that all of this is 100% MS Office Compatible. It not only opens MS Office files (.doc, .xls) but can also save in that format! That way, you don't need to have MS Office to create or save MS Office documents. Cool huh? I tell ya what - I could go on and on about this one - it's really one of the most - if not the most - powerful office suites I've ever had the privilege of using! Gmail's Phishing Protection We all know that phishing is annoying, don't we? Sometimes it's really hard to tell whether an e-mail is legitimate or not and that can lead us into some trouble. Well, I’ve got the solution for you today! Instead of playing the guessing game, you can use Gmail’s forwarding feature to easily determine whether or not an e-mail is safe. Interested? Then let's check it out! Gmail’s Forwarding Feature First of all, Gmail (like many other e-mail programs) allows you to forward your e-mails to another e-mail address. For example, my e-mail address could be brandonzubek@gmail.com, but because people often misspell my name, I could forward all e-mails sent to brandonzubeck@gmail.com or brendanzubek@gmail.com to my real, correctly spelled e-mail address. That way, I can ensure all my e-mails always get to their destination. So, to forward your e-mails, simply follow these directions: 1.) Log in to Gmail and click on Settings in the upper right hand corner of the page. 2.) Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP. 3.) Next, click the option that says "Forward a copy of incoming mail" and specify the e-mail address you want your mail sent to. 4.) Scroll down and click Save Changes. Your e-mail will then be forwarded! Applying Gmail's Forward to Your Phishing Battle Okay, I can hear you all saying, "Yeah, I understand that, but what does it have to do with phishing?" I know that’s what you're most interested in, so here you go. Here’s what you can do! Let's say I use PayPal, eBay and some discussion forums and I have created three e-mail accounts, one for each use: brandon-paypal@gmail.com All of those redirect to my main account of brandon@gmail.com. At the top of all the Gmail e-mails you receive, there is a To:/From: field. It looks something like this: Now, to me, "YouTube Service" means YouTube sent the e-mail directly to brandon@gmail.com. However, take a closer look at the To:/From: field: That means YouTube sent the e-mail to brandon-forums@gmail.com, but the e-mail was forwarded to the e-mail Inbox I am looking at now, which is brandon@gmail.com. This is the tool you can use to spot phishing. For example, if you receive a message supposedly from PayPal with the e-mail address of brandon-forums@gmail.com at the top, you know the e-mail is a scam (phishing), because you should only receive PayPal communications through brandon-paypal@gmail.com. Confused? Well, this may make it a little clearer. If you receive a message supposedly from PayPal like this, you know it’s phishing. Of course, phishing e-mails are not that obvious to spot, but seeing that the e-mail was sent to brandon-forums@gmail.com tells you the e-mail was sent by someone who knows that e-mail address. And since PayPal only knows your brandon-paypal@gmail.com e-mail address, it's obvious the e-mail didn’t really originate from PayPal. Here’s a fact for you: In 2007, in the United States alone, $3.2 billion was lost to phishing. In the UK, one in 20 e-mail users claim to have been victims of phishing in 2005. So, all I have to say is don’t get phished! Be a smart e-mailer and use the tactics we have gone over today. It's an easy way to keep yourself protected in Gmail! ~ Brandon Zubek If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing.
Friday Funnies For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter. Welcome to Kids Health, a Web site that is separated into three parts so that everyone can get the most out of it! The sections are Parents, Kids and Teen. Parents – In this section, the first thing you'll notice is probably whatever is being featured at the moment. While I was there, it was the issue of cutting. To the right of the featured article, you’ll find a menu. The sections on that menu are: General Health, Infections, Emotions & Behavior, Growth & Development, Nutrition & Fitness, Pregnancy & Newborns, Medical Problems, Positive Parenting, First Aid & Safety, Doctors & Hospitals, In the News and En Espanol. Beneath the featured article, you’ll find the Daily Q&A as well. While I was there, it was about how you should sleep while you’re pregnant and why. I also noticed on the strip that scrolls across the bottom that you can click into a section for teachers, where you'll find help with lesson plans and activities. Kids – On the main page, you’ll find the spotlight section. While I was there, it was about Crushes. Crushes goes through and dissects what a crush is, how children might be feeling and what to do about it. On the side menu, you'll see a lot of sections. A favorite of mine is "Dealing with Feelings." That section gives kids a lot of scenarios they may be in and it discusses how they may be feeling and why. The other sections are: Staying Healthy, Recipes, Everyday Illness and Injuries, My Body, Growing Up, Kid's Talk (a Q&A section on a lot of different subjects), Watch Out, The Game Closet, Kid's Health Problems, WORD! A Glossary of Medical Terms, Health Problems of Grownups and En Espanol (which allows you to access it in Spanish). People, Places & Things That Help Me - I left this section off the list, because I wanted to talk about it a little more in depth. This section teaches children about People (Therapist, Doctors, Dentists, School Counselors), Places (Hospital, Emergency Room, Operating Room) and Things (Shots, Medicines, Casts, Glasses and Contacts, etc.) they may have to experience during a time in their childhood. Teen – There is a bounty of wonderful information here that I really wish I had access to as a teen. For example, Body Beautiful in the lower left corner answers questions and teaches you about body image. This section specifically targets teen issues, as you can tell from the side menu. The categories are: Your Mind, Your Body, Sexual Health, Food & Fitness, Recipes, Drugs & Alcohol, Q & A, Diseases & Conditions, Infections, School & Jobs, Staying Safe and En Espanol. There was a great article on confidence while I was there. It was at the top of the page and was titled “Kayla’s Story: Alopecia.” Kayla has Alopecia, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles. In spite of her hair falling out, she has retained her confidence and still feels beautiful! She even won a beauty pageant and competed for Miss Delaware, where she finished fourth. Kids Health is a site filled with helpful health information for all ages. It certainly is one you can explore with your children or send your children to for answers. Check it out today! ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
