Quick Tips

Stickers Be Gone

I know you may be a little confused by that title, but once you're done reading this tip, you'll be fully informed. I promise! So, have you recently bought a new laptop? If so, have you ever been bothered by all the stickers that are stuck to it? I mean, they're practically everywhere and they seem like they're going to be a permanent fixture on your brand new computer. Well, I have good news for you. That just doesn't have to be the case. Want to get rid of those pesky little stickers? Then try this!

Now, some of the stickers are good to keep on, because they prevent scratches, etc., but most of them can come off. Decide which ones you don't want and pull them off slowly. If you go too fast or try to pull the sticker off all with one tug, you may make it harder for it to actually come off. Start by raising the edges with either your fingernails or a pair of tweezers. Once you have an edge up, pull the sticker off slowly. Go slow!

When you have the sticker off, take your finger and rub it over where the sticker was placed. There may be some sticky stuff there, but your finger will turn that into little dots and you can then just swipe them off your laptop. If you can't get it off with your finger, try using an eraser from a pencil. That should do the trick. Don't try using any products (like Goo Gone or a cleaner) to get the stickers off. All of that may damage your laptop and you definitely don't want to do that. Once your laptop is sticker free, you'll be so much happier. I just know it!

"Your Keyboard Is Really Disgusting!"

It's Nastier Than A Toilet Seat - Really:

"Keyboards, both on laptop computers and desktops, are the dirtiest parts of a computer. Dust, food, flakes of dry skin, and many other particles fall in between keys and gum up the works."
~ Smart Computing

"A microbiologist at the University of Arizona counted bacteria on workplace surfaces for a study sponsored by The Clorox Co., makers of Clorox bleach. Office toilet seats had 49 germs per square inch, he found. But desktops had almost 21,000 germs per square inch. Desks, phones, computer keyboards and mice are key germ transfer points because people touch them so often..." ~ CNN.com

Is that disgusting or what?

Unfortunately, like many people, I eat at my desk just about everyday while I am working. When I saw the information on just how dirty and germ filled our desktops and keyboards are, I couldn't believe it ~ or didn't want to believe it I should say. YUCK!

Fortunately, I remembered seeing a really cool vacuum attachment designed just for keyboards so I thought I'd check it out. It's called a Wacky Vac attachment (pretty goofy, I know) but the cool thing is that it attaches to just about any type of vacuum hose or wand and is safe enough to be used on your keyboard, desktop, in drawers, lampshades, wherever!

The attachment has 25 of these cool super suction pipes for fitting into little nooks and crannies. Heck, I think it would be great for detailing inside you car as well ~ all the little vents and stuff! And, how about cleaning off your stereo and TV equipment as well as dusting off all the shelves full of "knick-knacks", picture frames and such ~ awesome, huh?

This has got to be one the coolest little gadgets I've seen and after reading about all the dust, food and gunk that is "living" in my keyboard (and yours too), I think this is a terrific item! We've added them to our store and I hope you'll all take advantage of the great price ~ only $14.97 and shipping in the US is FREE! Don't spend $30.00 elsewhere ~ do yourself, your co-workers and your family a favor and pick up one for your home and/or office today! You'll thank me later ;-)

Computers 101

Q:
In yesterday's newsletter, you had an article about Grouply, which struck me as odd. I heard that Grouply is a phishing site and that I shouldn't use it. Can you please explain that to me?

A:
Wow, I've gotten so many questions just like this one in the last 24 hours, I think I've lost count! It seems like most of you sent me an e-mail as soon as you finished reading yesterday's article, because they just kept rolling in. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm glad you all cared enough about the topic to send me your concerns and questions about it. That just shows me you really care about your computer and its safety. So, since so many of you are waiting for some answers, let's get right down to business!

To begin, I have one thing to say that will probably answer most of your questions. "No, Grouply is not a spammer, phisher or an identity thief." Grouply does not and will never send out any type of spam, but they do understand where the concerns are coming from. When you start using Grouply, other members may send you invites to certain things going on within your group and those can sometimes be mistaken as spam. It's also possible to receive those invites more than once, which makes it look like you're getting spam directly from Grouply. But, as you can see, that's just not the case!

Now, this issue started popping up during the week of February 3, 2008 and although Grouply's not sure why, they were able to fix it right away. They quickly created an update for Grouply and it's now set so that no user will receive an invite more than once. So, if you're new to Grouply and you've already been invited to a group, you will only see that e-mail one time. Grouply even released a complete article about the issue, which, if you're still concerned, you can read here. Also, just for your information, Grouply has been around since September 2007 and they have never run into a problem like this before.

On Grouply's Web site, they make it clear that they are not out to cause phishing problems or get caught up in identity theft. When you sign up for Grouply, you are required to provide your Yahoo! password, but they only use that to view your group lists and send you your group messages. If they didn't ask for that information, they wouldn't be able to send you your daily Smart Digest or cater to what interests you most. And that's what Grouply is all about. I can assure you that they do not use your information for anything else.

I know there are several blogs and forum posts going around the Web about Grouply these days, but if you read them closely, you'll see they're only speculations and they're usually from people who have never even tried Grouply. Also, it's important to know that Grouply's Web site is protected by TRUSTe, which is a certified privacy company. That just goes to show that Grouply does keep your information secure and they don't want anything bad to happen to their members. If you're still worried about Grouply, you may want to stop using it, but if I were you, I'd at least give it a try. I mean, if it's something that's fun and it interests you, how bad could it possibly be?!

MS Office

Turn Many Into One

Here's the scenario: you're working on a table of data in MS Excel and you're trying to put a title over the entire table. What do you do?

I've watched a lot of people cope with this situation and while their solutions were creative (putting extra spaces before the title, enlarging the title until it was over the entire chart, etc.), they certainly weren't very efficient or editor-friendly.

So, if those kinds of things are your usual method, you definitely need to know about a wonderful little thing called "merging cells." To merge cells is to have Excel turn several cells into just one. So, basically, it lets you turn this:

Into this:

And that's with just one click of a button!

The next time you're trying to center something across several cells, skip all the time consuming steps and remember to give it a simple one, two:

One: Highlight the cells you need to merge.

Two: Click the Merge and Center button.

In older versions of Excel, you'll find this button on the Formatting toolbar.

In Excel 2007, you'll find the Merge and Center button on the Home ribbon.

Voila! Many cells are now one. If you type your title into that cell, you'll find it centered perfectly over your data, with no extra spacing and no off-centered titles.

Oh, but wait! I can hear the wheels turning in your mind right now. You're wondering how to reverse the merging process, am I right? In fact, some of you may have tried to click the Merge and Center button again in an attempt to separate the cells.

If you're using Excel 2007, clicking the Merge and Center button again will do the trick, but if you're using an older version, it won't work.

In those versions, separating the cells takes a couple more steps, but it's still not too bad. First, you'll need to highlight the cell you want to un-merge.

Next, you need to open the Format Cells window (Format menu, Cells choice or Ctrl + 1).

Under the Alignment tab, you're looking to uncheck the Merge Cells box.

Click OK and voila! The one cell is now back to many.

Too bad I don't have one of these little merge buttons when I break a glass dish or something. It'd be so cool to press a button and make everything perfect again, don't you think?!

More Cool Stuff

WOW! We had a HUGE response to this one yesterday! Only a few left - so head to the site before they sell out. These will be GONE today!

My Favorite Program Of All Time!

Create A Home Network In A Matter Of Mouse-Clicks!

Share Files Between Computers!

Share Your Printers!

Price Reduced - Lowest Ever - $10.97!

Last Chance - We Have The LAST Few Of 'Em!

I love this program! It's called Network Magic and it's by far the easiest way we've EVER seen to setup a home or small office network! I almost can't stand how impressed I am with it! We're talking about having two or more computers sharing files and printers in about 10 minutes!

The bad news is that we are into the very last of these. I have to admit, I'm really sad to see this one go. We have people asking us all the time how to setup a home network, and the simple answer is this software! It makes it ridiculously easy to put on together! I mean, in literally a few mouse clicks, you have a network setup! No calling for help, no expensive networking company to come to the rescue - it just plain WORKS!

Plus, it's really EASY! We're talking easy wizards and help along the way. It's completely designed so that all you need to know how to do is read and click a mouse! No confusing technical jargon at all. Everything is explained simply and easily along the way. You won't believe how easy this is! For example, adding a shared folder or printer is just a two click operation, select the item and hit Share!

I've always had problems setting up networks. In fact, prior to owning this fantastic software, I tried to set a network up at home. I spent about an hour on it and finally gave up. I just couldn't get one computer to see the other, much less share a printer. Well, I installed this software and in about 10 minutes I had the computers sharing files and printers! I've never seen anything this easy! My wife was laughing at me - apparently she doesn't get as excited about this stuff :-)

Here's how it works - this'll amaze you! You just install the software on the computer you want to network. Next, run through the little wizard and answer a few questions / preferences (deciding what you want to share, what you don't). Once that computer is done, you go on to the next one. Run the software, follow the wizard, and just like that you're networked! Here's a cropped shot of my shiny new network: (Can you tell I'm happy about all this? :-)

That's it! Seriously! The above network was really set up in all of ten minutes! Is that incredible or what??? Talk about super-simple! Now, I can print to her printer, she can print over to mine, we can share files - the whole shootin' match!

Oh, and if you've ever had problems connecting to the internet, slow web pages, or connecting to another computer, then this can help with that too:

Just select the problem you're having and this will try to get things up and running for you again! I've been using this for about a year and let me tell ya, it always WORKS! My stupid cable connection is always dropping, and usually a few mouse clicks with this and things are refreshed and running again! Is that cool or what? Plus, it does everything automatically. It's like having a network tech right in your house!

Oh, and get this - not only does it do networking like it's on steroids, but it also keeps you safe. It will check your network and wireless network and make sure everything is secure. If you have a hole, this will tell you about it and help you fix it (usually in about 2 clicks)! In fact, this once detected an intruder on my home network and helped me get rid of them! I think it was just a neighbor "borrowing" my network, but that doesn't happen anymore! It helped me get things really locked down and now we're the only ones who can use our network! I love it!

Whew, I think that covers the main points. oh, and another cool thing - this is licensed for up to three computers, so you only need one copy for most home networks (if you have more than 3 computers, you'll need to buy more copies). PLUS this is Windows XP AND Vista compatible!

Your cost? Get this - just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's an amazing deal on what has to be one of the best ideas I've ever seen. I love mine, that's for sure! Here's the info, take a look:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=3303

PS - Like I said at the beginning - our supplier is out of these now. We grabbed the last of the batch, and this is it. You MUST get to the site soon or you'll miss out on this! Don't kick yourself later for not grabbin' this! It's $50 normally!

Tip of the Day

Vista Energy Saving Features

To begin, let's go over a few basics. Windows Vista is a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft for use with personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs and media centers. Released worldwide on January 30, 2007, Vista contains many changes and new features over the earlier version of Windows XP. But, most importantly, it comes with a whole slew of new energy saving features. So, what do you say we take a look and see what we've got? Let's go!

What it Means in Plain English

With Windows Vista, Microsoft planned to put their machines to "sleep" after an hour of inactivity. While businesses and consumers can change that setting, computers can nod off on their own if pre-set. Microsoft estimates that allowing a PC to go to sleep during off hours, as compared to leaving it on all the time, saves anywhere from $55 to $70 a year, depending on the type of monitor you use. Wow!

On the other hand, with Windows XP, programs could veto a user's request for the PC to go to sleep. In some cases, laptop owners thought they had put their computer to sleep, only to discover a few hours later that the machine had remained on and the battery had been drained. By adding the new sleep option, you can wake up your computer to install security updates, while letting it remain in the power-saving mode the rest of the time.

Also in Vista, you can enforce the power management settings through the group policy tool. All that snoozing time could pay off environmentally as well. By putting six PCs to sleep, rather than leaving them on all the time, you can save the same amount of carbon emissions that would otherwise require an acre of trees to absorb. Only about 10 percent of computers today have power management features enabled, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Power Saving Features

The Windows Vista operating system features significant changes to power management infrastructure, functionality and default settings. Those changes impact how PCs running Microsoft Windows consume energy.

How to Take Advantage

Keeping with the theme of making your computer more energy efficient, those of you who are running Windows Vista can take advantage of many of the new power saving features that were implemented. For starters, you can get a software engineer to download a piece of white paper from the Microsoft Web site here so that they can configure Windows Vista platforms for maximum energy efficiency. The techniques on the paper may be used to help extend mobile PC battery life and reduce energy operation expenses for desktop and server PCs. The paper also explains how to evaluate system energy efficiency and it demonstrates example power policy settings to favor power savings and performance. Here's to saving yourself some energy!

Today's Feature

AMP Font Viewer

The other day, I received an e-mail from a reader, asking if there was a program that would allow for a quick look at all of the fonts on their system, without having to open a big program such as MS Word. I started looking around and I happened upon a great free download that does just that! It's called AMP Font Viewer and it's very simple to install and use. Just install the program, open it and you'll be good to go!

Here's what it looks like:

As you can see from the image above, all you need to do is click on the name of the font and it will show you what the font looks like. This little program now saves me a ton of time when I'm searching for new fonts!

You can download the AMP Font Viewer right here. Simply click on the Download button at the top of the page and then click on the Installer button. Enjoy!

Daylight Saving Time

This past year, Daylight Saving Time changed for those of us living in the U.S., so I thought I’d write up this Web site to give everyone a heads up. Here you will find time change information for the European Union, as well as, other places all around the world.

We’re used to changing our clocks in April, but this year, it will be on March 9, 2008 at different times during the day, depending on your time zone. In Europe, it will be on March 30, 2008. This site gives you that information in an easy to read table, as well as, more information about the changes below the table. You’ll also find out where Daylight Saving Time is not observed and why.

It also explains the grammar behind Daylight Saving Time, including the common usage of the phrase and what you’ll find in the dictionary. You will also learn about important safety measures you should take at this time, such as changing the batteries in your smoke detectors.

On the side menu, you’ll find more sections about Daylight Saving Time and its history. I really enjoyed the Incidents and Anecdotes section, where you can see the interesting effect Daylight Saving Time has had on events and people from around the world. From thwarted bombings to catching trains on time to the controversy some locals had over it, Daylight Saving Time certainly has had an impact on history.

So, are you ready to spring forward? I must say, I’m certainly looking forward to more sunshine!
