Firefox Reaches Milestone Okay, so today's quick tip is a little different than what we normally do here at WorldStart, but I saw this mentioned on our message board the other day (thanks HARLEY!) and I just had to share the news with all of you! I know several of you use Firefox as your main Web browser, so I thought you would get a kick out of this. According to the Mozilla Blog, Firefox has now reached 500,000,000 downloads. Wow! Five hundred million downloads! How amazing is that? That's obviously quite a feat for the Mozilla team, so I just wanted to take this time today to send off our congrats. And if you're an avid Firefox user, you know how important it is to have a browser you can trust and enjoy using so much. Let's give them a round of applause! ~ Erin Make sure you keep reading to learn all about what's going on these days with the release of the Windows Vista SP 1, find out how to get your slides numbered the way you want them in MS PowerPoint and learn how you can easily get rid of all the duplicate files on your computer. Also, find out what you should look for when buying a tripod with today's digital photography tip and of course, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day. Enjoy! Got A Camera? Then YOU Need THIS! Clean Your Lens - With A PEN! Really! I have an awesome one for you today! We have the coolest little camera accessory ever! It's called a LensPen and it makes the normally tedious - and sometimes difficult - chore of cleaning your camera lens a breeze! I've personally been using one of these for years on my lenses and let me tell ya - THEY WORK! No messy fluids, no special tissues, no worry about scratching your equipment! Just pop the cleaning tip out of the pen and, using a circular motion, it will remove all the gunk on your lens! Fingerprints, "gunk" dust, dirt - it removes them easily - and leaves you with a sparkling clean lens! Even has a brush on one end to take care of "heavy" debris (sand, heavy dust, etc)! WOW! I tell ya, years ago I used to work in a camera store and you should have seen how nasty all the lenses were that came in! I just never understood why people would spend good money on a camera, only to never clean off the lens! If you want sharp photos, you gotta keep that lens CLEAN! And this does the job easier than any other lens cleaning kit, that's for SURE! This particular LenPen is specifically designed for point & shoot style cameras - both digital and film. It's the perfect size to clean the lenses of just about every compact or point & shoot camera out there! And it does an AMAZING job at it too! I'm STILL impressed after all these years at how great these work - oh, and they seem to last forever too! I can say that I've never worn one of these out - I always lose it first! I always go back for another one though! If you want your photos to be better, this is a must have! It makes it soooo easy to keep your lens clean! I know I love having mine - I use it before every shoot! It's by far the best way I've come across to keep your lenses clean! Your cost? Get this - just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! For that price, you gotta give it a go (grab a couple)! You'll love it too! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4171 PS - This is one of the top sellers from our supplier, so make sure you get to the site quickly before we run out! YES! These are FINALLY back in stock! We featured these a couple months ago and the response was overwhelming! We blew through our suppliers inventory and have been getting asked, "When are you getting more of those cool little flash drives"! People just LOVE them! We now have a total of 4 really great colors too! HURRY to the site - these aren't gonna last! Our LOWEST Price EVER! Is That Unreal Or What?? This is so cool! We just received some really GREAT pricing on 2 Gig Flash Drives! Normally, we sell these for $40, and most regular stores get between $60 and $80 for 'em (Just saw a "regular" flash drive eariler today at a local computer store for $50!!)! I can't believe we're able to do these for less than $25!! Oh, and get this - these are PQI drives, so they're top of the line, and they have a lifetime warranty! We weren't planning on running these today, but with this kind of deal, we just had to tell you! I personally just love these things. I use them for transporting photos, backing up important files, transferring large files - or large numbers of files. Great to move MP3s around with too! Heck, just the other day I used one to take some photos over to a friend's house to show them a recent trip! I also popped on a funny video I downloaded the other day - so many uses! Oh, and setup is soooo easy! Just plug it into an XP or Vista computer and you're good to go. The drive will show up under My Computer. Just drag the files over you want to put on the drive! That's it! We have a lot of people who use these larger drives as a "portable office". At 2 Gig, most people can fit all the documents they would ever need on them! Just take it from work to home - your stuff is always with you! Of course, you could drop some of your favorite MP3s on there for some tunes at work too (but you didn't hear that from me :-) Again, we just got the price break on these, so now's the time to buy! Just $22.97 and US shipping is FREE! $80 retail!! It's crazy not to grab a few at this kind of price! And, here's something we usually don't do, we're giving you your choice of colors - Grey, Blue, Pink, or Green - pick the color that suits you best (and, this is a great way to color code them). Here's the links:
PS - We're not sure how long our inventory is going to last on these, and at less than $25, they'll probably fly our of here. Get to the site as soon as you can!! Q: A: Well, as most of you probably already know, last week (around February 20, 2008), Microsoft had to make some changes to the final release of the Vista SP 1. Because of certain issues, they were forced to remove a component from the software that was actually a prerequisite to installing the Service Pack in the first place. So, as you can imagine, without that piece of the puzzle, the SP 1 is not going to be worth much to Vista users at all. Now, while all of that is bad news, Microsoft had very good reasons for doing what they did. Basically, they received several reports that the file was causing computers to crash or even enter a cycle of continuous boots and reboots. Therefore, they put the file on hold so that they could look into the problem a little more and find out what's really causing the bug. All in all, if Microsoft would have gone ahead with the release, all of you Vista users out there would have had to deal with system crashes and endless reboots on a daily basis. I don't know about you, but I'm glad they made the decision they did! Windows Vista program manager Nick White said the bug only "affects a small number of customers in unique situations," but they didn't want to take that chance. Some users have already installed the update as a test run and they have been complaining about the problem for weeks now. One user said their computer just keeps rebooting and rebooting, while another said the update destroyed any access they had to their computer. If you ask me, those are some pretty serious issues! So, as a result of all this, the Windows Vista SP 1 won't be available as a manual download until at least the middle of March 2008. As of right now, it's supposed to come through with the monthly Windows Updates, but you will be able to download it right from Microsoft's Web site as well. While this news is disappointing, I promise the SP 1 will be worth it. It's coming packed with more than 300 hot fixes for the Vista operating system, which was released a little more than a year ago. So, even though you have to wait a little longer for the release to get here, it will be well worth your wait. I'll continue to keep you posted on any other changes that may occur in the next few weeks as well, so stay tuned! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: Numbered My Way Ever give a presentation that involved a couple of different PowerPoint files? Was it confusing to have the slide numbers of all the different files start over at 1? Looking for a quick fix to avoid duplicates? No, I'm not proposing something so drastic as to merge the two presentations together; it's just a quick adjustment to the slide numbering! To alter the number of the first slide in a presentation, you need to go to the Page Setup dialogue window. In older versions of PowerPoint, the Page Setup is found under the File menu. In PowerPoint 2007, you can find it on the Design ribbon. In any case, when the Page Setup window opens, take a look in the bottom left corner. See the Number Slides From field? That's where you'll enter the number you want for the first slide in the presentation and then click OK. There you have it. A quick fix to your duplicate number dilemma! ~ April
Move HUGE Files From Computer to Computer! Move Thousands of Files From Computer to Computer! Super-Easy! Incredible Cable Makes It Drag & Drop Simple! You Just Gotta Grab One! WOW! We just got a sweet deal on some amazing USB 2.0 Direct Link Cables! These things are just sooo cooool! I use mine all the time to transfer files and I can't imagine my digital life without one! What do they do? Glad you asked! You just take this handy little cable and plug one end into the computer that has the files you want, then plug the other end into the computer where you want the files. An explorer-like window opens up on both computers - allowing you to just drag and drop your files from one machine to the other! My 6 year old can do it! It's super-simple! Plus, it makes moving around big files and multiple files sooo much easier! For example, when I'm on a trip taking pictures, I off-load onto my laptop. Well, when I get home, I like to transfer those files to my desktop. Without this cable, I'd have to copy groups of them to CD or flash drive - that's no fun! With one of these awesome little cables, things get soooo much easier - I just plug my cable in, drag my photos from my laptop to my desktop, and in a matter of minutes everything is transferred! I absolutely love it! It's great when I have to get files off of a friend's computer too - just plug in and we transfer what we need! While this is really handy for moving around large or numerous files, it's just killer when you get a new computer! Instead of trying to copy hundreds or thousands of files via CD or flash drive, just plug in one of these cables! It's so much easier! It makes getting a new computer almost painless! Oh, and these are driverless too! Just pop the cable in and it works! No CD to install, no drivers to mess with! Isn't that cool?? Oh, and although it works just fine with USB 1.x, it's blazing fast with USB 2.0 ports! It transferred 1 GIG worth of photos about a minute! It's about the fastest way I've come across to transfer files! I don't know about you, but I've spent more than a few long evenings making CDs full of data to transfer from one computer to another - or, more recently, copying a bunch of files to an external HD to do the same job. The pain and hassle of the old way is gone - this little cord makes it so quick and easy! My advice? If you're ever, in your lifetime, going to get another computer or have reason to transfer files from a desktop to a laptop, then this is an absolute must-have. Once you plug it in and try it, you'll wonder how you got along without it. It's one of the most useful devices I think we've ever offered. Your cost? Get this, just $16.97 and US shipping is FREE! I've spent more in CDs to transfer files than that! This is a must-have for everyone with a computer. We've all been there - needing to transfer large files or large numbers of files - and this is the smartest solution I've ever seen. http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=2606 PS - This is a limited quantity deal - make sure you grab one before they all fly outta here! It's a fantastic cable and I can't imagine computing without one now! I just can't recommend them highly enough!! Awesome Headset w/Microphone! This Professional Headset with Mic is soooo cool! OK, let's face it - at one time or another, you're gonna need a headset microphone. It could be to:
Trouble is, about the time you need a microphone, you just don't have one. Well, that's where this deal comes in! These headphones fit comfortably over your head and the earphones are nice and padded so they really are comfortable to wear! The headset is fully adjustable too - so you can wear 'em nice and snug if you like or put them on a little looser if you don't want to mess the hair ;-) The microphone is posable so you can move it out of the way if you just want to listen to some tunes without any distraction. Even though these have a mic, they are GREAT for listening to music. Sometimes when you're wearing just those little earbuds, they don't quite block out the surrounding noise - know what I mean? These do a great job! And, the volume control is built right into the cord so it's easy to adjust if you're "rockin out" and then need to turn down the volume, making 'em super easy to use. These are also great for using with Yahoo Instant Messenger. Instead of calling back and forth on the phone, just pop on the headset and call via the instant messenger! The sound quality is as good as what you get on the phone (and better than most cell phone conversations)! If you make a lot of long distance calls, you could use this trick to save hundreds of dollars a year in long distance! Here's the really great thing, we've got an AWESOME deal on these, your cost is just $14.97 (and that includes FREE shipping in the US)! Don't miss out, check 'em out here:
Deleting Duplicate Files As we use our personal computers, files that are both intentionally and unknowingly saved accumulate on our hard drives and they eventually cause our computers to slow down or even freeze for long periods of time. However, what most of us do not realize is that a large number of the files that clog our hard drives are unnecessary duplicates. The duplications are normally caused by accidentally downloading the same files more than once, failure to delete files that were supposed to be moved from one folder (or partition) to another and keyboard/mouse errors that pop up as we go about our daily computing tasks. Lucky for all of us, there is a free program called the Easy Duplicate Finder Portable 1.5 and it serves as a simple and effective solution for: 1.) People who have a lot of files on their hard drives. 2.) Those who want to remove unnecessary duplicate files from their PC. This program scans your hard drive and identifies duplicate files, which allows you to delete unnecessary documents. When I used it on my laptop computer, it only took six minutes and 42 seconds to completely scan my 80 GB hard drive and only a few seconds to complete the deletion of my unwanted files. Now, that's fast and accurate, wouldn't you say?! In my first scan, 495.35 MB of duplicates were found, which was hard to believe, because I bought my laptop only four months ago. However, after scrutinizing the scan results, I realized there were entire folders of unintentionally duplicated files, as well as, duplicates residing in my program folders and under the Temporary Internet Files section. Using the software is very easy (please refer to the screenshot below for a reference). Simply download and install the Easy Duplicate Finder Portable 1.5, run the program by opening it, highlight the drives you want to be scanned and then click the Add button, followed by Start. To avoid deleting any of your vital files, choose Protect System Folders and Protect Other System Files (*.sys, *.ocx, *.drv, *.dll, etc.) prior to clicking the Start button. After your scan results have been displayed, the duplicate files may be manually selected by right clicking them and choosing “Select all duplicates in this folder” and by clicking “Delete Selected." That's all there is to it! Now, your computer will be free from all of those dreaded duplicate files. Yes! ~ Joel Ciron If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. Buying a Tripod: What to Look For For shake-free photography, a tripod is a must! Of course, you can rest your camera on any solid surface and the effect will be just as good, but if you use a tripod, you can tilt your camera any which way you want and still take pictures without a blur. A tripod is especially important if you're taking pictures of yourself or a person, place or thing in low lighting. But, before you embark on a tripod shopping spree, here are a few tips you should keep in mind. Let's check them out!
This one depends on the type of camera you're using. If you're a hobby photographer who carries several camera lenses and flashes, it's important for you to buy a tripod that can handle the additional weight of the lenses and flash. On the other hand, if you use a point-and-shoot compact camera that doesn’t have any additional flashes or lenses, even the most light-weight tripod will do. Another thing to consider is "how much is too much." A tripod is something you have to lug around, so the lighter it is, the better it is for you. But going for a solid tripod that can take on a lot more weight than you really need isn’t a good thing either. Just go for the one that suits your needs the best. Go for Stability Some tripods can take the burden, but aren't really good at standing on their feet. By this, I mean they are prone to being knocked down even if someone so much as brushes past them. Some might not be able to take heavy wind either. So, the best way to test the stability of your tripod is to place your camera on it and test it out with all its legs in full position. If it feels awkward and wobbly, abandon it right away and move on to another choice. Watch the Legs Locking the legs is as important as stability of a tripod. Since manufacturers differ in their ergonomics, it’s best to check out half a dozen of them before buying the one that suits you best. The ergonomics of the leg angle release mechanism and the quick action leg locks allow for effortless adjustments. Not only will it seem less cumbersome, but it also promises safety of your camera equipment, as the tripod has to be in place with the full weight of your camera on it.
Most tripods come in two and three extensions. While some are most comfortable with two extensions, some find three to be a lot better. In hindsight, there are advantages to both. If you choose a tripod with only two extensions, you’ll have a longer piece to haul around when it’s folded up. On the other hand, there is less messing around with extending and locking the legs. Three extensions will give you a smaller folded up tripod and a more sturdy hold. It’s All in the Length Tripods come in all shapes and sizes. Go for one that’s about your height when it's fully extended. That way, you're buying something that’s custom made for you. Also, height matters depending on the kind of photography you do. If it’s tabletop or group photography, a tripod is a must and the higher it is, the better. But, if those are shots you rarely take, you don’t really need an ultra-tall tripod. Therefore, choose judiciously. Look for a Comfortable Tripod Head Every tripod comes with headgear that is uniquely different from one another. Some are easy to use, while some are very cumbersome. It’s also very subjective, so you need to judge it yourself by attaching your camera to the tripod and testing it out. Does it take a lot of time to set up your camera? Or, is it quick and secure? You need to look at those things before you zero in on a tripod. Doing that will also determine how much flexibility you have once the camera is attached. Some photographers prefer tripod heads that can be removed very easily so that they can hand-hold their cameras for a few of their shots. Others like tripod heads that offer a lot more flexibility when the camera is attached. There are two main kinds of tripods. The "ball and socket" tripods are highly flexible and offer a smooth touch and feel. The second kind is the "pan and tilt" tripod, which is inexpensive and it locks its heads into place much more firmly and securely. However, you can’t move out a lot with those heads. If you don’t like the tripod head you're currently using, you can buy one separately if your tripod allows for it. And Finally... Though it’s best to ask your friends and relatives which tripod they use, the best advice is to check out at least three to four shops before honing in on one. That's because most of your relatives and friends might be using tripods that are old fashioned and some may not even be on the market today. So, the best thing to do is check out the latest models and opt for the one that suits you the best! ~ Zahid H.
