Computer Tips [ Beware of IRS Phishing Scam + Word On Watermarks + Bring Dead Pixels Back To Life ] 03/05/08

Quick Tips

A Cheaper Vista

Are you among the many who still haven't made the switch over to Windows Vista? Well, you're definitely not alone. Thousands of individual users and businesses alike are still using older operating systems like Windows XP. Some say they just don't want to have to learn a whole new operating system, while others say they're just waiting until the Vista SP 1 is released. Some people have even said they're waiting because Vista is just too expensive. Is that why you've waited? If so, that's all about to change!

I just received word the other day that Microsoft has decided to cut the price of Windows Vista in an attempt to sway more users into making the switch over to the new operating system. Here are the changes: Vista Ultimate is now going to be $319, down from $399; the Vista Home Premium version is now $129, down from $159 and the Home Basic upgrade version is going to be $219, down from $259. So, as you can see, they're not drastic changes, but every little bit helps, right?!

Microsoft also announced that they will be lowering the prices for Vista in nearly 70 different countries and they wanted to make it clear that the price cuts will vary by country. The price changes are also going to coincide with the release of the SP 1, which should be sometime this month (March 2008). Since its release back in January 2007, Microsoft has sold over 100 million copies of Windows Vista and this just goes to show they're hoping for 100 million more! So, tell me, are you going to run out and buy Vista for the lower price? Or, are you going to hang on to XP for awhile longer? The choice is yours, but at least you now have some new options!

EWWW! This'll Gross You Out:

"A microbiologist at the University of Arizona counted bacteria on workplace surfaces for a study sponsored by The Clorox Co., makers of Clorox bleach. Office toilet seats had 49 germs per square inch, he found. But desktops had almost 21,000 germs per square inch. Desks, phones, computer keyboards and mice are key germ transfer points because people touch them so often..." ~ CNN.com

YUCK! Is That Disgusting or What??

Kill Those Nasty Germs In Seconds!!!

Ultraviolet Technology Makes It Quick, Easy and Chemical Free!

Now I wouldn't classify myself as a "germophobe", but when I read studies like the one above, I think I could easily become one! When you stop and think about all the surfaces you touch or come into contact with on a daily basis that dozens (or hundreds) of other people touch, you know there are TONS of icky, nasty germs crawling around out there! Especially this time of year, the cold and flu season (yuck!).

So, when I recently received a sample of this portable Disinfecting UV Scanner, I thought I'd research it a little to see what it's all about before sharing it with you all. Boy, am I glad I did! This thing is AMAZING!

First, I'll give you a little background on the technology behind it - it's really pretty interesting!

"UV-C light is germicidal - i.e., it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens and thus destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease. Specifically, UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of such bonds prevent the DNA from being unzipped for replication, and the organism is unable to reproduce. In fact, when the organism tries to replicate, it dies." ~ Ultraviolet.com (You can read more about it by clicking here.)

So, in a "nutshell", you can easily disinfect and sterilize just about any object you come into contact with by "swiping" the UV Scanner over it for about 10-20 seconds. This includes bacteria and viruses such as: E-Coli, Bacillus Subtilin, Staphylococcus Auras, Hepatitis, Influenza and many other viruses as well! The kill rate is greater than 99.9%. I think that's pretty amazing, don't you?

Here's the great thing, this Disinfecting UV Scanner is extremely portable! It only measures about 5" folded and when it's fully opened it's about 9" in length. It weighs less than a 1/2 lb. and even comes with a handy carrying pouch as well! You can take this with you anywhere and everywhere (discreetly if you choose) and keep bacteria and other harmful viruses away!

This isn't just for you desktop and keyboard either! It's safe and effective to use on your dishes, toothbrush, cell phone, kids toys, car interior, door handles, etc. You get the idea ;-) Everyone here has been scanning their office from top to bottom since we got this in - it's still working on the same set of batteries too! You get about 4,000 scans with this on just one set - pretty amazing, huh?

When I was checking this item out, I saw that most similar products like this go for no less than $70.00 - OUCH! - some are closer to $100.00 - yikes! Well get this, your cost is just $16.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US! Just think about all the money you spend on those little bottles of hand sanitizer every month - this will pay for itself in no time at all!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4043

PS - Don't spend $70.00 elsewhere ~ do yourself, your coworkers and your family a favor and pick up one for your home and/or office today! You'll thank me later ;-)

HUNDREDS Are Feelin' The POWER!

120V Power On The Road!

Just Plug In!

Turn Your Car's Lighter Into A 120V Household Plug!

Really!

WOW - We had an amazing response to this one yesterday! THANK YOU to the hundreds who ordered! I know you'll enjoy having this 75 Watt Power Inverter! as much as I do! They really are fantastic! Don't know what we're all excited about? Want to know more about these "Power inverters"?

Basically, a power inverter is a device that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter and converts the 12V DC power supply into 110/120V AC power supply. In short, this unit gives you a household AC plug that you can use in your car! Basically, you can use this great little gadget to power all kinds of devices. Everyone I've talked to has come up with several uses for it (then promptly bought one :-)

Think about the possibilities - you could use this for charging laptops, DVD players, small TVs, video game consoles, and cell phones! This power inverter is a valuable accessory for both long and short trips alike. Heck, it would even be handy for recharging batteries (been there, done that - camera, iPod, MP3, etc.) - I can't think of anything you wouldn't be able to use with this!

I've had an inverter for several years, I can't imagine hitting the road without one! I've been on several cross country trips in over the last year and this is one accessory that's always plugged into my cigarette lighter! I use it constantly!

This Power Inverter also features low-voltage thermal overload protection to protect against short circuiting, overheating, and overload and can be positioned several ways to better fit different car designs. I can't find one thing I don't just love about this item! It's absolutely fantastic! Oh ya - it's also really lightweight (about 1/2 lb.) and really compact so it's easy to store when not in use or to move from one vehicle to another!

Your price on this is incredible - just $16.97 and US shipping is FREE! Power inverters are normally on the expensive side - most go for $50-$90, so this is an outstanding buy.

Computers 101

Q:
How can I find out what name my computer is listed under? I think I may need to change it. Thanks for all your help!

A:
What an excellent question! In all actuality, your computer should be registered under your own name (or maybe someone else in your family), but if you're not completely sure, there's a simple way you can check it out.

To see your computer's name, go to your desktop and find the My Computer icon. Right click on that and choose Properties. That will bring up a box with several tabs listed. Find the Computer Name tab and click on it.

Once that opens, you will be able to see the name your computer uses. You will first see the computer description, which is probably just something you put in when you first got your computer. Or, maybe you got your computer from someone else and the description hasn't been changed yet. If you want to type something else in for that area, you can go ahead and do that now. Next, you will see the full computer name and the workgroup name (if you have one).

If you would like to rename your computer, simply click on the Change button and type in the correct name. When you're done, click OK twice. It's as simple as that! So, if you ever need to change your computer's name again, you now know an easy and fast way to do it. Yes!

MS Office

Mark It Up

You all know about watermarks, right? You know, either a light picture or some text placed behind your text on a printed document. They can mark a document as a draft or as confidential, or they can be used to enhance the appearance of your document.

In older versions of MS Word, you had to do quite a bit of work to get a watermark. You were forced to go through the header and make changes to lighten the coloring of the picture.

Good news! With the newer versions of Word, starting with Word XP, there's a quick and easy way to use watermarks, with Word doing all of the tedious work for you!

In older versions of Word, you need to follow these steps:

While the document is open, go to the Format menu, Background submenu, Printed Watermark choice. The Printed Watermark window will open, presenting you with three choices.
  • You can leave the choice as No Watermark. This could be used to remove a watermark that was previously inserted.

  • The second option is a Picture watermark. Choose this and the settings for that section will become active.

Click the Select Picture button to locate the graphic you want to use for your watermark.

You can use the Scale field to dictate the watermark's size or you can leave it as Auto, which will tell Word to center it on your page.

The Washout choice makes the picture lighter in color, so I'd leave that one alone. It's difficult to read text over a brightly colored picture
  • The third choice in the Printed Watermark window is to have one made of Text.

You can select text to use from the drop down list or you can enter your own word or phrase in the Text field.

Below that, you can choose a font, size and color.

Again, I suggest you leave the semi-transparent option checked. That way, you can read the text that's placed over it.

At the bottom, you'll need to choose the orientation of the text. If you want to "give it a try" without closing the window, click the Apply button. The document will then be updated with the watermark without closing the Printed Watermark window. This allows you to easily make additional changes if necessary.

When you've got a watermark you like, simply click the OK button.

For users of Word 2007, you'll find the Watermark button on the Page Layout ribbon.

When you click the button, you'll be presented with some commonly used text watermarks.

You can choose one of those or click Custom Watermark at the bottom to see the same options discussed above for older versions of Word.

As easy as that, Word inserts your chosen watermark in the center of each page of your document. Oh yeah!

Here's One That's Easy To Swallow!

Amazing Multi-Size Pill Cutter!

Includes 12 Different Trays!

This Is Just Too Clever!

OK, I know this isn't our normal type of special, but these Pill Cutters are just sooo cool! Plus, wait till you see the deal we got ya on this one!

First off, if you take medication where you have to split the pill up, you know it can be a hassle. I've been there too - trying to split the stupid thing with a butter knife! Pill parts shooting all over the place, the knife jamming into the counter top, not a lot of fun!

Well, this little pill cutter makes it incredibly easy to split your pills! Just pick the appropriate tray (it has 12!), set the pill in and pull the cutter down! That's it! It splits it evenly and cleanly! Nothing to it! I tried it on a vitamin just to test and I couldn't help but grin at how easy this was to use and how great it worked! What a fantastic idea!

Plus, this is a multi-size cutter so it accommodates not only your "standard" looking pills, but all those funky shaped ones as well! Makes it easy to divide you dosage up, that's for sure!

All that's great, but ya know what I really like about this? You know when your doctor gives you a prescription for those GIANT "horse pills"? Don't ya hate that? Well, if you have one of these little gadgets, you can split that monster down to a more manageable size!

Plus, your price is fantastic - just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's a fantastic deal on a gadget that we're all going to need from time to time! Don't be stuck wishing you had one - get yours today!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4111

PS - Come on now, you know that it's only a matter of time before you have to split a pill for yourself, a family member or even a pet (that's what I'm using mine for right now)! Grab one of these before you need it! You'll be thrilled you have it!

Throwing Out An Old Hard Drive Or Computer?

STOP!!!!! STOP!!!!! STOP!!!!!

You MUST Run This First

Or Risk The World Knowing Your Personal Info!

WOW! We continue to sell DriveScrubber like CRAZY! THANK YOU to the hundreds who ordered!! It's a must-have for anyone using a computer!

If you have an old computer you're thinking about giving away or just throwing out you need to STOP! You MUST GET THAT DATA OFF THERE!!!!

See, when you delete a file, it's not really gone. YES - You read that right! The area where the file sits on the hard drive gets tagged as free space, but until it's overwritten, that data is VERY recoverable. I formatted a test drive and ran recovery software on it awhile ago just to see what would happen. Nearly EVERYTHING was easily recoverable! No problem at all! Recent studies show that 74% of hard drives sold or given away contain data that can be easily read and recovered - even if they've been formatted!!

If you've ever used your computer to check on your banking, buy a product online, or anything that involves your personal info, then that info might be easily available when you get rid of your old hardware! Yikes!

Well, we have some really easy to use software that will keep you safe called DriveScrubber. Just pop the CD into your computer (or make a floppy if you still have a drive for one of those) and reboot. Even if you can't boot to Windows, you can still erase that drive with this software!

You computer will boot to the CD or the floppy, and you'll have an easy to use interface that makes wiping a drive a snap. Just select the drive and click the "erase" button. ALL the info on the drive will be gone - permanently and forever! You can still reformat the drive and install Windows again once this is done - but any personal info you had on the drive will be completely gone. No worries about anyone ever using your hard drive or old computer to steal you personal info! It's great!

Think about it - you wouldn't toss paperwork with credit card, bank, or social security numbers in the trash without shredding the heck out of 'em would you? Of course not! However, day in and day out, people toss out old computers and think that just deleting or formatting a drive is going to get rid of all the personal info they had on it - not a chance!

Your cost for all this protection? Just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! Sure, it's not a program that you'll use every day, but everyone with a computer WILL need to use it someday! For this kind of money, it's insane not to be safe. Check it out:

Tip of the Day

Foxmarks

Today, we’ll be covering a Firefox extension called Foxmarks! I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. I’m so excited to share it with you, so let’s get right to it!

If Firefox is your main Web browser, you probably have it installed on all the computers you use regularly, right? However, a problem with your bookmarks may arise. For example, all of your bookmarks on computer A are not necessarily saved on computer B and computer C. And that's when Foxmarks comes in handy. Foxmarks synchronizes your bookmarks so that you have all of them right at your fingertips! Here's how to get it:

1.) Open up Firefox on your first computer and head on over to this Web site. Once you're there, click on the big green Install Now button and follow the installation procedure.

2.) When Firefox reopens, the Foxmarks Setup Wizard will be displayed. Click Next.

3.) Now, you’ll be asked for your username and password. You’ll need to create one, so go ahead and click on the "Need to create a new account?" option.

4.) Just fill out the required information and then wait for your confirmation e-mail to arrive.

5.) Click the confirmation link in the e-mail that Foxmarks sent you.

6.) Then go back to the Setup Wizard and enter in your new information. Click Next when you're finished.

7.) Foxmarks will then verify your account. Click OK, followed by Next.

8.) You will then be notified that your bookmarks are about to be uploaded. Go ahead and click Next.

9.) You’re done! Click the Finish button.

Okay, now I’ll show you how to add auxiliary computers to your Foxmarks account.

1.) Open Firefox on one of your other computers and once again, download Foxmarks from this Web site.

2.) After Firefox restarts, the Setup Wizard will open again. Just click Next.

3.) Now, type in your username and password and your account will then be verified. Click OK.

4.) Select Next. Now, you will be asked how you’d like to add the new bookmarks. I suggest the Merge option. That way, the bookmarks from both of your computers will be added to the server.

5.) Finally, click Finish.

You can add as many computers as you want to your account. Also, keep in mind that Foxmarks automatically synchronizes your new bookmarks when you shut down Firefox. Talk about convenient! Another great feature of Foxmarks is the ability to see your bookmarks from any computer anywhere in the world. Just head on over to my.foxmarks.com and log in!

With all these great features, you might even feel guilty that you’re getting Foxmarks for free. Enjoy!

Today's Feature

More on IRS Phishing Attacks

I'm sure you all know it's tax time again, right? As we all battle the hassles of doing our taxes, some phishers have decided to take advantage of this time of year. As you know, phishing is the act of sending e-mail or other communications with the intent of trying to get personal information from an individual. Since it's tax time, it's the perfect opportunity for phishers to pretend they're the IRS. They will send an e-mail that appears to be from the IRS. They will ask you to click on a link or reply to an e-mail and provide your personal information, such as your social security number, birth date, tax payer IDs, bank account information and so on.

The IRS has reported that phishing scams using their name has gone up nearly 12 times the amount of last year. The IRS has also said that they have shut down nearly 1,700 phishing Web sites that claim to be part of their service. This issue has grown to be a huge problem. With these threats at an all time high and identity theft also being a major issue, it's important not to fall as a victim to one of these attacks.

Protecting yourself from these types of attacks can be tricky though. Many attempts at phishing your personal information will seem very real. They will appear to be a legitimate e-mail from the IRS asking for your information. The links in the e-mails will take you to Web sites that appear to belong to the IRS, which is why they have made a very clear policy for e-mailing. The following is a quote from the official IRS Web site:

“The IRS never sends out unsolicited e-mails and under no circumstances, requests credit card information and pin numbers through e-mail. Persons receiving e-mails that claim to be from the IRS should not attempt to visit any site contained within the e-mail and should report suspicious e-mails to TIGTA or the IRS.”

If you feel you have received a phishing e-mail that claims to be from the IRS, you should not delete the e-mail. Rather, you should immediately forward it to the phishing@irs.gov address. Doing that will help the IRS find and prosecute the people who are creating the phishing attacks. It will not only help you to stay safe, but it will help others remain safe as well. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Kill Dead Pixel

Do you have an LCD monitor that has a dead pixel somewhere on the screen? Those drive me crazy! But that won't be happening anymore, because now, there's something you can do to fix it! It isn’t a guaranteed fix, but it's definitely worth a shot, right?

Just drag the image over to the dead pixel and leave it there for an hour. The image will massage the dead pixel and try to stimulate it back to life. So, how does the massage work, you ask? Well, the image is rapidly changing the dead pixel and the pixels around it.

If after an hour, it's still dead, you can try another option. You can try the full screen version, but the downside is you have to leave it to do its work for 12 hours. Make sure you follow the directions carefully before you start the 12 hour massage.

You don’t want to leave any status bar visible during the process, because it may harm your LCD. Therefore, you need to put your Internet browser on full screen mode and hide all the bars.

This is fairly easy to use and it gives you a good shot at reviving those annoying dead pixels. If you ask me, it's definitely worth a try!
