Stalled E-mails So, there you are sitting at your desk with your morning coffee and you're just waiting for all of your e-mail to come through to your Inbox (using Outlook Express). You may have several e-mails that have piled up overnight and you just want them to download as fast as possible. Everything's going fine until you are rudely interrupted by an e-mail stall. Yep, the download process just stops all of a sudden and you have no idea why. Is there really any rhyme or reason to that? Well, let's find out! An e-mail download stall can be caused by a few different things. One reason could be that the amount of e-mail you're trying to bring in is rather large. (I get over 1,000 e-mails everyday and this happens to me all the time). So, while you're waiting for all of those e-mails to come in, your connection may time out and therefore, your e-mail program just stops. Unfortunately, there's not really a good way to fix this, but if you hit the Send/Receive button again, the rest of your e-mails should come through. Another cause of the sudden stop could be that your Internet connection is going in and out or it's just flat out failing. That will definitely mess with your e-mail connection and your e-mail will pause until your Internet is back up and running. Now, I know these types of things may not happen to any of you very often, but if they do ever come around, at least you now know what could be causing the problem! ~ Erin It's Friday, it's Friday! Q: A: Easter eggs are hidden features that programmers decide to include on any of their software, including DVDs and games. It's just anything the creator wants to add to the software, but they keep it hidden for their own personal reasons. Easter eggs could be anything from a hidden list of the contributors to the software to hidden commands, jokes, bloopers, animations, hidden dialogue and so on. It could be anything they thought was cool to add to the software for reasons only they can understand! A real Easter egg must follow five criteria: 1.) The information has to be undocumented, hidden and not obvious to the viewers. It can't be something that goes along with whatever software you're using. The Easter eggs only stand out because they are different and don't fit into the regular context. The programmers usually have some connection with the "eggs," so they include it in the program for extra entertainment, mostly for themselves. 2.) All Easter eggs have to be reproducible. With a set of instructions, anyone has to be able to reproduce the eggs. 3.) They have to be placed on the program by the creators for their own personal reasons, such as a signature, an inside joke, a tribute, etc. The eggs must have been placed on there on purpose and through the general knowledge of all the creators. 4.) Easter eggs cannot be malicious in any way. They are only meant for fun! 5.) This is the most important one. They have to be entertaining. If not, it's not a legitimate Easter egg. You can search online for different Easter eggs if you want. It's fun to find ones that are on programs you have used or movies you have seen. Check out this Web site to look for Easter eggs. It has an archive of the newest ones found and lots more. It's worth a shot to see what you can find, don't you think?! By the way, Happy Easter! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: Playing with Building Blocks In your older version of MS Word, did you use the AutoText feature regularly? Are you a little upset that you can't seem to locate it in Word 2007? Well, wipe that frown off your face, because the basic idea of it is still there. Yes, it had a face lift and it's now accessible through a different feature, but it's definitely still there! What you're now looking to find is the Quick Parts feature located on the Insert ribbon. Word 2007 uses something called Building Blocks to save text for repeated insertion into documents. So, now that you know what they are, how can you create them? Well, first you need to find or type the content you're looking to make into a building block. Then just highlight the text. Now, it's important for me to say that if you want the formatting (indents and line spacing, for example) saved as part of the Building Block, you'll need to highlight the paragraph mark along with the rest of the text. (To ensure you get everything highlighted, you can display hidden marks like that by going to the Home ribbon and clicking on the Show/Hide Paragraph button). With your text selected, you need to go to the Insert ribbon, Quick Parts button and choose the "Save Selection to Quick Parts Gallery" option at the bottom. The Create New Building Block dialogue window will then open, allowing you to name the building block and set up your own options. I did find that in the Gallery field, AutoText is listed along with a lot of other choices. After some experimenting, I found that if I saved it as an AutoText entry, I could access it through the AutoText button I added to my Quick Access Toolbar. However, if I added it to the Quick Parts Gallery, it was accessible from the Insert ribbon, Quick Parts button. Like this: As you can see, Word now begins the Quick Parts list with its gallery above the commands you saw when you first began. To insert a Building Block, place your cursor at the correct insertion point in your document, display the Quick Parts Gallery and then click on the text you need. Once you've got a gallery going, it's pretty easy to use and it's definitely useful if you have a lot of "boilerplate" text you use frequently in your documents. If you save the different topics or paragraphs as different Building Blocks, you can build custom documents from them as well. That sounds much better than a template, don't you think? Have fun "playing" with your blocks! ~ April
FINALLY - An Easy Way To... Organize, Edit, Email, And Print Your Photos!! On Sale TODAY ONLY(03-21-2008) Just $8.97!! WOW!! A Must Read: OK, you have a digital camera. Let me guess - you have a ton of photos all over your hard drive, right? That's what I thought :-) Wouldn't it be great if there were a way to keep all those images organized, easy to work with, and simple to share? Great news - we found a new program every digital photographer is going to want. It's called Personal ImageManger Express and it's just awesome! I can tell you it's going to make my digital life a lot easier - read on! First off, it's really easy (dare I say even fun) to use. It can acquire photos from your hard drive, digital camera, scanner, whatever. From there, you can quickly organize all your photos into easy to manage categories. You can even create categories across numerous folders. In fact, you can even put the same photo in multiple categories if you like (very handy). However, image management is just the beginning with this one! It also features an excellent photo editor that includes all the major tools you need. This thing just blew me away! It can easily do stuff like color balance, contrast, brightness, hue, cropping, red-eye removal, even special effects! Plus, it has an awesome "one-button enhance" tool that does a great job at automatically making your images look their very best! You may never use your old imaging software again! And then it gets even better! This program also has an awesome captioning feature. You can add a regular caption at the bottom (or top, side etc) to a photo or you can place a caption in the image itself (see site for a screen shot). And get this - these captions are searchable by the program! Excellent tool! As if all that weren't enough, you can also add "picture frames" to photos with the click of a button, as well as photographer info, dates, shapes, clipart and more! Even rate your own photos and search by rating! And there's still more to tell! This also makes it really easy to share photos by e-mail! One of the biggest problems people run into when they want to e-mail a photo is the photos are just too big - usually way too big. They take forever to send, forever to download, and are hard for the recipient to see. This little gem will resize any image for e-mail with the click of a button (the original image stays intact, of course). In fact, if you use an e-mail client on your computer (like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc), it will resize your image and automatically put it in a new message for you! Just put in the address, fill in a subject, and send - it couldn't be easier. Even if you already know how to resize for e-mail, this will do it with a lot more speed and a lot less hassle. OK, I gotta tell you about the printing and I'll stop :-) If you print your images you know that getting them to the proper size for 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10 can be a pain. Well, this does it automatically for you! Cool huh? Alright, I think you get the idea - this is one program every digital photographer should be using and I've only touched on a portion of what it can do! It's easy to work with, loaded with tons of useful features, and the price is right - it's on sale TODAY ONLY (03-21-2008) for just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's an amazing deal, check it out: http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=2050 PS - If you take digital photos, you owe it to yourself to try this. Mine is awful looking, but I don't want to ruin it in the process. Please help! That's not a silly question at all! We all clean our mice, right? So, why not give the mousepad a little touch up too? Also, it's imperative to have a mousepad underneath your mouse when you're using it, so why wouldn't you take good care of it? After you clean your mouse, you might as well make the mousepad your next project. And here are some tips that can help you do just that! Just like a mouse, the mousepad can easily collect dirt, dead skin and oil. After all of that sits in place for awhile, it can start to make your mousepad look a little grimy and gross. Listed below are the steps you need to follow to keep your mousepad looking spic and span! 1.) Most of the mousepads out there today have a spongy, foamy material in them. Then on top of that, they are usually covered with a thin fabric or a plastic top. Investigate as to which material yours is made out of before you go any further. That will determine which way you can clean your mousepad. 2.) If the material is a fabric, you can use a slightly moist washcloth and a little bit of shampoo. (Make sure you're using a cloth you don't mind getting dirty). This works out well, because chances are, you already have shampoo on hand and it's a gentle cleaner that works perfectly on different fabrics. 3.) On the other hand, if your mousepad has a plastic top, spray a bit of your household cleaner on it. Make sure it's a mild kind and you only need to use a small amount. Use a piece of cloth or a sponge to then clean the pad. Even dish soap or some shampoo would work for this type of mousepad too. 4.) Once you choose which method you'd like to use, go ahead and clean the mousepad as best you can. When you're done, make sure all of the cleaners get rinsed off. 5.) When the whole thing is rinsed, use a towel to dry the mousepad. Just pat the towel gently until the surface feels dry. 6.) Now, even though it may feel dry, there's probably still some water soaked in, so let it sit overnight or as long as you need to. Make sure it is completely dry (even all the way into the foam) before you start using it again. Also, if your desk is wooden, you'll want the mousepad to be 100 percent dry, because the water could ruin the surface of your desk as well. The only other thing you want to be careful of when you're cleaning your mousepad is the color of it. If you think the water might ruin the colors, test it out first. Just moisten a corner of the mousepad to see what it does. It's better to ruin just a corner, rather than the whole thing. Also, if your mousepad is coming apart at the seams or if it is stained pretty badly, you may just want to go out and purchase a new one. They're relatively inexpensive and it's better to have a good place for your mouse to sit than to keep an old mousepad hanging around. One more thing! While you're waiting for your mousepad to dry, you might as well clean that mouse of yours too. You can read here and here for some help with that, depending on the type of mouse you have. Wow, who knew I could write so much about cleaning a mousepad?! I bet you'll also be surprised at how much dirt and grime you clean off of yours.
