The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is a utility that scans your computer for any infections that revolve around malicious software. If anything is found, the Removal Tool then helps to get rid of it. A few examples of the software it focuses on a bit more are Blaster, Sasser and Mydoom. Once the scan is finished and the malicious software is removed from your computer, the Tool gives you a report describing everything that was detected and removed. Now, like the person who asked today's question stated, a version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is released each month with the Windows Updates. Other versions of the Tool are also released when needed to help out with new security issues. The version you install each month through the Windows Updates simply sits in the background on your computer and alerts you if an infection is found. You are able to run the Tool more than once a month if you wish, but in order to do that, you need to download a different copy from Microsoft's Web site. That's completely up to you! It's possible that some of you neglect to install the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool each month. You may think your computer is just fine and you're convinced you don't need another utility running on your computer. Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I strongly recommend you run the Tool at least once a month. Even if your computer seems to be acting normal, you're still at risk of being infected. The Removal Tool is heavy duty and it makes a big difference when it comes to keeping your computer safe. You should also make sure you keep all of your other antivirus, spyware, etc. software up to date. Those programs can work along with the Tool to keep your computer as protected as possible. Also, just for your information, the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool works with the following operating systems: Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Server 2003. Stay safe! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: Wrapped with Style Do you use a lot of pictures in your MS Word documents? Do you hate the way they push the text around the document, often causing awkward looking gaps and layout problems? How would you like a way to get the text and picture to "play together nicely?" You know, make them work in a way that doesn't create a whole new set of issues that you have to deal with. For example, maybe turn this: Into this: Sound good? Yes, it sure does! What we're looking for is called text wrapping (which makes sense given that we need to wrap the text around the picture). There are a couple of ways to find the text wrapping settings. For those of you using older versions of MS Word, the first I'd like to discuss is on the Picture Toolbar, which opens when a picture is selected. You're looking for the Text Wrapping button. The little dog represents a picture and the lines represent text so that you can tell by looking at the button how the relationship between the two is currently set. If you're using Word 2007, you'll find the Text Wrapping function on the Picture Tools, Format ribbon, which was displayed when the picture was inserted. In any version, if you click the button, a whole list of choices will appear. Choose from the list how you want the text to interact with the picture (the names are pretty self-explanatory). I tend to choose either Tight (which has the text follow the contours of the picture, as shown above) or Square (which will force the text into a square shape at the edges of the picture). But, whatever your choice, you should see a change in the way the text behaves around the picture. Hopefully your choice makes an improvement, but if it doesn't, simply select a different option. Now, let's move on to the second way to cause text wrapping changes. Should you, for some reason, not have the picture toolbar handy or not want to switch to the picture ribbon, you can choose to right click on the picture. In older versions of Word, you need to choose Format Picture from the menu that pops open. When the Picture Format window opens, you're looking for the tab that contains the wrapping choices. In the newer versions, it's under the Layout tab and in the older versions, you may find a Wrapping tab. Either way, when you get there, you're presented with pretty much the same choices. Make your selection and click OK. If you're using Word 2007, your right click will look like this: As you can see, Text Wrapping is an option on the menu and it immediately opens up to your choice list. All you have to do from there is choose! In any case, you're back in your document where you should find that the text and picture have begun a very pleasant relationship, giving you the professional look you were seeking! ~ April
NO WAY! Forget It!! Use A Graphics Table & Stylus Pen!! Paint, Draw, Write, Sign, and Sketch With Precision and Ease! Take Greater Control Of Editing Photos And Documents! This is such a cool item ~ I am so glad they are finally coming down in price and are available to the average computer user! What is it you ask? A Graphics Tablet! You may have also heard of them referred to as digitizing tablets, graphics pads or drawing tablets but no matter the name, they generally refer to the same thing. In case you haven't heard of a Graphics Tablet before, it's simply an input device that can be used in place of or right along with a mouse, trackball or other pointing Pretty cool, huh? How's it work? Simple ~ you plug the tablet into your computer with the attached USB cable. Then, you can use the included stylus pen to draw directly into the program you are working in by "drawing" on the tablet ~ is that cool or what? Graphics Tablets have been used for years by graphic designers, engineers and the like because it gives much greater precision and detail than using a mouse. Again though, you can use this side-by-side with your mouse ~ I'm not suggesting tossing that guy away ;-) If you do a lot of photo editing, drawing, designing, etc. ~ you are just going to love this item! DVD Parental Controls Most of you probably know that setting parental controls for the Internet limits your children and grandchildren to certain Web sites. But I'm willing to bet that you've never heard of setting parental controls for DVDs that are watched using Windows Media Player, am I right? Well, it's true! You can activate Windows Media Player’s parental control feature to restrict your children from viewing any DVD movies with a rating at or below the one you specify. If you're interested in that, keep reading for all the details! If you have DVD decoder software installed on your computer (it usually comes with it), Windows Media Player can play movies using your DVD ROM drive. Yes, it's a great enhancement to Windows XP’s multimedia capabilities, but one downside is that not all DVDs are suitable for young children. If you have kids who use your computer and you have DVDs you don't want them to watch, you should definitely enable the Windows Media Player parental controls. That will allow you to set a rating for your children, ranging from G to PG-13. Any movie higher than the rating you specify cannot be viewed unless the user knows the correct password. Note: For the feature to work for you when assigning multiple user accounts with parental controls, you will need an Administrator account. So, with all that out of the way, let’s get started! 1.) First, go to Start, All Programs and then click on Windows Media Player. 2.) In the top right hand corner, click on the Access Application Menus button. 3.) Scroll down and click on Tools. A second box should then come up on the left of the first box. Click Options. Now, the Options dialogue box will appear. 4.) >From there, click on the DVD tab. 5.) Checkmark the Parental Control box. 6.) Next, click on the drop down bar and select the rating you prefer. 7.) Go ahead and click OK when you're finished. Once you do that, Windows Media Player will remind you to set up your user accounts. That can be done by setting up an account and a password. Then from there, you can set up limited accounts for your children or grandchildren. 8.) Lastly, finish it up by clicking OK in the Windows Media Player reminder box. There you have it. You can now control what your precious little ones watch! ~ Mike Pettinato If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing. Parental Control Bar Today, I have a security tip and a free download all packed in to one! I'm sure there are many of you parents and grandparents out there who are concerned about the possibility of your children and grandchildren accessing Web sites that are not intended for them. Well, lucky for all of you, I have a solution! I was able to find a program called Parental Control Bar that will help keep your children safe while they're online, which will also give you peace of mind when you're away from the computer! Installing the Parental Control Bar is simple! Just go to this Web site and click on the green Download button. Run the program and it will walk you through the installation. After the program is installed, you will see that the toolbar has a button to switch from Parent mode to Child mode. It's as simple as that! Now, if you want to customize the bar to allow certain site categories or specific Web sites, just click on the Change Parental Settings button. You can then customize it any way you want! For example, if your child comes across a Web site that is blocked and you want to unblock it, simply type in your parental password and it will be added to the Allowed Sites list. Isn't that easy? I sure thought so! Note: This toolbar works with Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP. It is also compatible with these Web browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. Enjoy and until next week, stay safe out there, my friends! ~ Gary For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter. This Web site is really cute and I know you're going to have a ton of fun with it! This site allows you to upload one of your photos and then make it into a Polaroid style with text. And did I mention it's extremely easy to use? First, you click the Choose button and select a photo from your computer that you want to Polaroid-ize! Once you’ve done that, select a Polaroid frame you’d like to use. I like the ones that are set off at an angle. Next, select your text color. Then just simply write your text. You have up to 50 characters, so you can be pretty creative! Now, you’re all set and ready to click the Preview button. You will then see the photo you selected all done up with the text and colors you chose. If you don’t like it, hit the Back button on your browser and change it around. The second step on the preview page is to fill out your e-mail address on the From: line and then put the e-mail address you’d like to send your Photo Note to in the To: text box. Make sure you only put one e-mail address per line! Next, just type in the code provided in the picture and then press the Send button. Doing that will also generate a link to the image so that you have one for your own records as well. Here are a few examples I made: You can then click Send Another to start a new one. If you decide to make multiple images in one sitting on this site, when you get to the code you have to type in, you will want to right click on the image and choose Reload. For some reason, the images didn't refresh when I made a new image, but reloading it fixed the problem. I hope you have as much fun on this site as I did! ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
