What They Didn't Teach You in School! A question: how much of your current success is directly attributed to what you learned in your schooling? I hear a lot of answers to that question: some feel "a lot" and some feel "very little." One of my long-term goals is to "reframe education" meaning help people to become successful by augmenting what is typically taught in schools and universities with more practical, relevant "secrets" of success, happiness and fulfillment. Look at the "XXXXX for Dummies" series of books -- they are wildly successful, and why? Because each of the books, like "Internet for Dummies" is actually very practically written with useful, relevant techniques, strategies and principles that really work -- not theoretical constructs which have little relevance in the real world. To help you augment your formal education, I've compiled for you the ten MUST-READ books for every person on the earth (in no particular order). Pick one and read it this month: 1. The Richest Man in Babylon by Geo. Clason (on building wealth) 2. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell 3. Your Erroneous Zones (or any book, like Power of Intention) by Dr. Wayne Dyer 4. How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie 5. The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino (it's not about sales, by the way) 6. Think & Grow Rich by Napolean Hill (it's NOT about just building wealth) 7. Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz 8. The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren 9. The Psychology of Winning by Dr. Denis Waitley 10. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. SR Covey On CBS in December, they broadcasted on TV an hour-long documentary, "In God's Name." Jules and Gedean Nuedet are the producers where they interviewed twelve of the religious leaders since 911 over the last four years. Click on the link IN GOD's NAME to see who they interviewed. The conclusion at the end: "We have far more in common among the world's religions than have in differences." To wit: Vatican diplomat: Catholics, Muslims must learn more about religions By Cindy Wooden, Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Catholics and Muslims must learn more about each other's religions if they want to get along better, said the Vatican ambassador in Egypt and former president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. "Rather than just knowing persons, we must know their religion more deeply in order to understand the people," Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald told Vatican Radio. The archbishop was interviewed Feb. 24, the evening before the annual Catholic-Muslim dialogue meeting of Vatican representatives with representatives of Cairo's al-Azhar University. "We know that among Muslims and Christians there are common points, although certainly not a common faith in Christ," Archbishop Fitzgerald said. "We must respect the differences while trying to find spheres in which it would be possible to collaborate and help one another." The dialogue with the Cairo-based university, a point of reference for many Muslims around the world, was marking its 10th annual session. Archbishop Fitzgerald said the theme chosen for the meeting was "Faith in God and Love for One's Neighbor as a Foundation for Interreligious Dialogue." "I hope that this can give a new impulse to relations between Christians and Muslims in the world," he said. Pointing to the October letter of 138 Muslim scholars to Pope Benedict XVI and other Christian leaders, the archbishop said there are signs that Muslims are increasingly interested in dialogue with Christians. "It makes me very happy to see their initiative," he said. And the fact that the scholars' letter focused on love of God and love of neighbor, two key points for Christians, "gives new hope for reaching a deeper dialogue." See full article HERE> PLUS, Here's an interesting article from my local newspaper about how Catholics are worshiping amid Muslims in Qatar: _______________ (Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman - NOT Catholic) Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church? Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to your Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. Your graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%, all at a cost to you. To the rest of the Americans it's free. The Catholic Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students. The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people - not just Catholics - in the United States today. But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage. Let me give you some figures that you as Catholics should know and remember. For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by the United Methodist Church, 41.8 % of clergywomen reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed. Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem. A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving. The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now. Be a proud member of the most important non governmental agency in the United States. Then remember what Jeremiah said: "Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls" Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions. Be proud that you're a Catholic.
