Quick Tips

Microsoft Extends XP's Life

As you may remember, a couple weeks ago, we ran an article in the newsletter that basically said Microsoft is cutting off Windows XP completely starting on June 30, 2008. I know most of you read that article, because I received tons of e-mails from all of you with comments, concerns and even some complaints. Unfortunately, there wasn't much I could say to console you, because I had the same feelings about the situation. But, after today, you may change your mind. Keep reading to find out why!

On April 3, 2008, Microsoft announced that they are going to prolong the life of XP for just a little while longer. Yep, you read that right! They are going to extend the license for the Windows XP Home version until at least June 30, 2010. That's a whole two more years! Now, there is a slight catch, but trust me, this is still good news. From here on out, Microsoft is only going to promote XP for ultra-low-cost personal computers (ULCPCs), which are now just starting to show up in the marketplace. So, basically, if you're looking into buying a new computer and you want XP, you may want to consider getting a ULCPC.

As for the rest of you, there's still good news! Microsoft also made the announcement that they are sticking to their word as far as technical support goes. They will continue to provide free mainstream support until April 2009 and if you have the extended support option, you will be covered until April 2014. I don't know about you, but that makes me feel quite a bit better! I know everything with XP happened pretty suddenly and it sometimes feels like Microsoft is pushing us into using Windows Vista, but now you can rest a little easier. Well, at least for the next couple of years. Enjoy it!

Computers 101

Q:
The other day, I was working on my computer and a window popped up that I've never seen before. My wife told me it was the "blue screen of death," but I'm not sure what she meant by that. Can you please explain this to me? Thank you!

A:
Oh yes, the infamous blue screen of death! I'm sure all of you have come across this at one time or another. In fact, it has probably happened to you one too many times, am I right? I know I've run into the blue screen problem once or twice and it can sometimes be very hard to deal with.

So, what is the blue screen I'm referring to? Well, the blue screen of death is the common name for an error screen that sometimes pops up in Windows. It is also called the stop error. It is basically what comes up on your computer screen when your PC cannot recover or is in danger of not being able to recover from a system error. This error screen has been present in all versions of Windows dating all the way back to Windows 3.1.

Whenever your system encounters an illegal operation and it can't do anything else to recover from it, the blue screen will come up. The only safe way to get out of the blue screen is to restart your computer. Unfortunately, some data can be lost in the process though, because you are not given a chance to save your work.

Here's an example of what the blue screen of death can look like:

The blue screen of death has different wording for each version of Windows and it references different utilities in different programs, but it basically means the same thing all the way around. Some common causes of the error are new hardware problems, new software, a virus or malware or even old or broken hardware. The causes can be endless, depending on the type of computer you have and the applications you have on it. The blue screen of death is an unfortunate encounter, but at least you now know what you can do about it!

MS Office

Tell Excel to Leave You Alone!

Yesterday's topic of formulas linked one workbook to another and as you may recall, in the end, MS Excel kept asking if you wanted to update the information. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you control both workbooks and you know there's no security problem, it can get somewhat annoying.

So, you must be asking, "Can I get Excel to stop asking and just go ahead with the update automatically?"

That's definitely a good question, so let's get right down to it. Should you decide that updating is always the right thing to do and you want Excel to stop asking and just do it, simply follow these easy steps.

If you're using Excel 2003 or older:

  • Go to the Tools menu, Options choice.

  • Under the Edit tab, uncheck the "Ask to Update Automatic Links" checkbox.

  • Click OK.

If you use Excel 2007:

  • You need to start with the Office Button and then click on the Excel Options button found there.

  • Once you're in the Excel Options dialogue window, you need to go to the Advanced Options, "When calculating this workbook" section.

  • Uncheck the "Update links to other documents" choice.

  • Click OK.

Now, you're all set. Automatic updates without a second thought!

WOW!

Savin' Your Life For $12.97!

Incredible Device Detects Electrical Current!

Don't Mess With Wires Or Electricity Without It!

EZ Test To See If There's Power!

These went over in a BIG way yesterday, and since there are still some available, we're going to give ya one last shot at grabbing one! A big THANK YOU to the hundreds and hundreds who ordered yesterday! You'll be glad to have it, that's for sure! I know I love mine!

Have you or someone you know ever needed to do some household wiring? Or maybe you just needed a way to test and see if something was actually getting power?  If so, this is one device you'll want for the next time! It's a Non-Contact Voltage Detector and it's a real life saver!

I mean, you know how it goes. You play the "flip the breaker" game (they never seem to be labeled well - kind of like modern Russian Roulette), until you "think" you have the power off to the area you need to wire. Unfortunately, thinking you have the power off just isn't enough - ask me how I know, LOL!

For instance, when we got our new house I had to replace one of the electrical outlets. Flipped off the breaker, lights in that room went off, and I thought I was set. THANK GOODNESS I have one of these little gadgets!

Just to be safe, I decided to use a Non-Contact Voltage Detector like the one were featuring today and see if the power was really out. OOPS! YIKES! The power was still on! The plug was at the edge of another circuit - and that circuit was still hot! Thankfully, I was able to get the correct breaker thrown and all went well.

How does it work? Couldn't be easier. Make sure you have fresh batteries installed, unit is on, then just hold the device up to the outlet (or wire, socket, whatever). If there's power, it will whistle and flash!

I've also found it's absolutely great to track use to down power problems! Say you have something that's not working (like a lamp) and you replaced the bulb and still no go. You can simply put this next to the outlet to see if there's power, next to the cord to see if it's getting power, and even into the socket to see if the power is getting there! Unlimited uses - something everyone should have!

I know I used the heck out of mine during our remodeling and I really can't recommend this little gadget highly enough! Don't just flip a switch or breaker off and assume your safe - know for sure!

Again, your cost is just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! Pretty cheap "life" insurance if you ask me! First time it keeps you from zappin' yourself, you'll be thanking me for telling you about it! Grab one today!

Don't fool yourself - if it's not happened to you yet, it will. What's a music junkie to do? Easy - Grab a set of these fantastic little earbuds for just $6.97, FREE US shipping! They sound great, work on any MP3 player or iPod and the price is fantastic! Grab a set or two:

Hey - Don't get stuck paying $25 somewhere else for these - grab 'em before they sell out!

WOW! Check This Out!

19 LED Flashlight!

We just got in a new LED flashlight - and I know you're gonna love it! This features a whopping 19 LEDs! I tell ya, this baby is bright! Let me warn you though, don't look directly into the light (Steve learned the hard way)! Who knew they could cram that many LEDs into the front of a flashlight? WOW!

I've had LED flashlights for awhile now, but this is by far my favorite - I just love it! It's really rugged and built extremely well. The rubberized grip is great when your hands are wet or snow covered. Plus, the light seems to run forever on a set of batteries and better yet - the LEDs NEVER burn out!

This flashlight is really compact and lightweight too. It's great to keep around the house, in a purse, a glove box, toolbox, in a backpack - you name it! You know how it is, you never can have enough flashlights!

If you've looked at LED flashlights, you know they are the pedigree of the lighting world - for a light like this, you're looking at least $30-$50 easy. Your cost? How about just $14.97? (And that includes FREE shipping in the US). It's a heck of deal on the BEST LED Flashlight we've ever offered! Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

PS - Please note, the last time we were able to get these was about 6 months ago and they sold out in a matter of days!!! PLEASE get to the site early ~ once they are gone it might be quite awhile before we have them available again!

Tip of the Day

Playing Your Media Safely

If you've ever listened to media downloaded or played from a Web site, you may have noticed that the playback was disrupted or somehow controlled. Unfortunately, Web site media can sometimes include extra commands in a script that are designed to control the playback. But I have a quick fix for that! Today, I'm going to show you how to apply a simple feature in Windows Media Player that will ensure the media you download or play from a Web site is safe. Let’s get started!

1.) First, go to Start, All Programs and open up Windows Media Player.

2.) Next, in the top right hand corner, click on the Access Application Menus button.

3.) Scroll down and click on Tools. A second box will then appear on the left where you can choose Options.

The Options dialogue box will then open.

4.) Click on the Security tab.

5.) You will now notice four unchecked boxes, with the first two being the most important. The first box says "Run script commands when present." Checkmark that box to avoid downloading and running scripts on your computer. The next box says "Do not run script commands and rich media streams if the Player is running inside a Web page." Checkmark that box to avoid Web page media from running scripts on your PC.

6.) Finally, go ahead and click OK.

Windows Media Player will then apply the new security settings to the Web media you play on your computer.

That’s all there is to it. You are now guaranteed a safe media experience!

Today's Feature

FreeCommander

Today, I have another great little utility for you called FreeCommander. FreeCommander is a program you can use to manage your files easily and with only one screen! So, tell me, have you ever used Windows Explorer? It's a nice little tool to use to easily view the files and folders on your system, but it has one major downfall. With Windows Explorer, you only get one screen. So, if you want to drag and drop your files to different locations on your computer, you need to have two Windows Explorer screens open at the same time. Yuck!

Well, that problem is quickly solved by FreeCommander! This utility provides you with two side by side windows where you can navigate and drag and drop your files between the different directories on your system. I love this program. It makes moving the files on my system so much easier and much more efficient!

Now, I'm guessing the dual window feature is enough to make you want this program, but there's another extra bonus. You can install this program on a flash drive! To do that, just install it on the flash drive and take it to any computer you want. You can then manage the files on any system, without having to install this program ever again. How cool is that?!

You can download FreeCommander for yourself right here. Just click on the fc_setup.zip link to get started. Also, while I'm talking about free downloads, have you had a chance to check out our new free Windows Vista and iGoogle gadgets yet? If not, you can do so right here. Enjoy it all!

My WOT

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could tell beforehand if a Web site is trustworthy or not? Well, with the Web of Trust (WOT) browser add on, you can! With 17,861,251 sites already rated and more being added everyday, this add on can definitely help you browse the Internet in a safer way!

I suggest watching the demo before you download the add on to see if it really is something you’d use. To do that, just click on the View Demo link located below the Free Download button. Not only can you watch the two minute video demo there, but you can also put WOT to the test. All you need to do is type in a Web address and click the Go button. It will then show you how that Web site has been rated.

Let's give it a try right now! Type in www.worldstart.com and wait for the results. I was quite proud to see that we are rated in the green!

The rating system goes like this:

Red alerts you of potential dangers on a Web site.

Yellow warns you to be cautious when browsing a certain Web site.

Green tells you that a Web site is safe!

There's even a child safety rating that can help you make better decisions about which sites are safe for your children to visit.

The download is very easy to do as well! It's available for both Firefox and Internet Explorer, so just pick the one you want and follow the instructions. When the download box comes up, choose Save. That puts it on your desktop so that you can install it at your leisure and you don’t have to go around searching for it. The download was practically instant!

The installation was also very quick and it gives you the option to view the user guide once you finish. The guide tells you more specifically about the stop light rating system and it gives you access to the FAQ section and the registration link.

You'll want to register if you’d like to make custom settings for your WOT. Just fill out the form and click on the Agree button after you’ve read through the terms and agreements. Then click on the link in your confirmation e-mail and set up your password. You’re good to go now! Note: You do not have to register in order to use WOT, it's just an option if you want to be able to customize your settings.

Take another step toward your safety and check out WOT today!
