Computer Tips [ Horrible Vista Update Wreaks Havoc + Easy Values + History 101 ] 04/21/2008

Quick Tips

Vista Update Wreaks Havoc

Are you a Windows Vista user? If so, have you been experiencing some problems with some of your USB devices within the last couple of days? Perhaps your keyboard and mouse just stopped working or maybe you're having trouble with some of your other devices. Either way, what a pain, right?! I mean, how are you supposed to get any of your work done on your computer if the devices you count on everyday don't even work? Well, keep reading as I explain what happened and what you can do about it!

On April 17, 2008 (just last Thursday), Microsoft made an announcement that one of their recent Windows Vista updates didn't mix so well with certain USB devices. If you're a Vista user, you probably know that a Windows Defender update came through to your computer last week. That update was intended to patch a critical hole in the Defender program and while that may have worked, it did the opposite for USB devices like keyboards and mice. Yep, it caused them to stop working completely.

Unfortunately, even though Microsoft is aware of the problem, they are only "investigating the matter" and they don't have any further information about it as of yet. So, all I can really tell you right now is to hang tight. If you're having trouble with your devices, just try to be patient and wait for Microsoft to fix this. I will also continue to keep you updated on this. As soon as I hear anything, you all will be the first to know. No doubt about it!

WOW! Amazing Webcam Deal!

Incredible Picture! - Video OR Still

Even Has A Built-In Mic!

Use To Video Conference - FREE!

It's Like FREE Long Distance - Only BETTER!

OK, we have an absolutely amazing buy for you today! We just got these amazing little webcams and WOW! - They are EVERYTHING you need for excellent video, audio, still photos, and video conferencing!

First off, I was blown away at the quality of this webcam! It's built well and is amazingly flexible! This thing will contort to whatever position you need! It bends, flexes, stretches, and even turns 360 degrees! Seems like it's built to last a good, long time too! You'll be using it years from now!

What about video quality? One word - IMPRESSIVE!! We're taking 350K in pixels and a frame rate of 30 FPS!  What that means to you is absolutely incredible video quality that's going to make people question if you're really using "just a little webcam"! The quality is just through the roof!

PLUS this has a built in mic! Seems like a lot of webcams either have no mic at all - or they have a really poor quality, after thought one. This uses a really high-quality microphone that sounds just fantastic! It even keeps your audio echo-free and really crisp! Wait till you hear it - it really sounds INCREDIBLE!

Oh, and it doesn't stop there! We're talking lots of great features like auto white balance for the best color under any lighting, a digital zoom, a snapshot button for taking 1.3MP still photos (Now that's really handy!), a slide-able camera lens for easy adjustments, and lots more! It's one loaded webcam, that's for sure!

One of my favorite uses for this is video calls! I personally use the excellent Yahoo Messenger and just love the video conferencing features. You just hook up your webcam, set up Yahoo Instant Messenger for video (easy - you basically tell it you have a webcam - takes about 20 seconds), and you have an instant video conferencing system! Buy two of these and send one to that family member or friend you love to talk long distance with! You can now forget the phone and chat for free - and with video! I tell ya, once you go to video conferencing and video calls, you won't want to use a regular telephone! (That, and it saves just a TON of long distance charges!) I LOVE using this to talk to my kids when I'm out of town!

This would also be just fantastic for doing video messages! Simply record a video and send it off to a friend via e-mail! Why type everything up when you could shoot a quick video and send that? It's more fun for you and way more fun for your friends!

Oh, ever need a quick snapshot to send someone to show them your new look, a cool toy you just got, or some other "You need to see it now" deal? Well, with it's 1.3 MP still camera, YOU CAN!

It's time to jump onto the video revolution! Grab yourself one of these fantastic little cameras and get started today! You owe it to yourself to at least give it a try, and I think you'll really enjoy it when you do! Plus this is SOOOO affordable! This could pay for itself in long distance phone charges in a matter of minutes!

OK- the deal? Get this - just $20.97 and US shipping is FREE! Told ya it was an amazing deal! Head to the site ASAP and grab one! (Might want to get some for friends too!)

Special Note - These went like crazy on Friday! If you missed out, here's one more shot at 'em! Don't get left behind, these are the just the handiest little adapters! I already have one in my laptop bag - it's so small and easy to carry, I LOVE it!

The USB Adapter YOU'VE Been Waiting For!

What A Great Idea!

You'll ALWAYS Have The Right Cable!

OK, this thing is just too cool to pass up! Someone had the creativity on overdrive when this idea popped into their head! I seriously don't think I've ever seen a better USB adapter!

What am I going on about? Well, we've got these really cool 6 Connection USB Cable Adapters - and what an incredible idea! Seems like I am forever looking for a lost USB cable to this gadget or that device. With this, one unit has all the connections you'll ever need! Super idea!

These have FIVE count 'em FIVE different USB connections PLUS the included retractable cable doubles as a USB extension cord!

To use the adapter, just rotate the main part of it and plug it into your device! It's shaped so that each type of plug has plenty of room to plug into your device without hitting the other plugs! Very slick if you ask me!

Oh, and this is super-easy to take along with you on any trip - and really handy to have on or around your desk too! I've already needed it to hook up a card reader! Works with ANY USB Device!

I tell ya - if you use USB, this can really be a lifesaver! Keep this handy and you'll never be looking around for a cord when you need to plug something in! Sure, you may not use it every day, but believe me - you'll be REALLY glad you have it when that day comes that you really need it!

Your cost? Just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! For that kind of money, it's crazy to pass this up! Have a look:

Computers 101

Q:
What exactly does troubleshooting mean?

A:
Oh, excellent question! You've probably heard the word "troubleshooting" mostly in relation to computers, right? If you ever run into a problem with your computer, you're always told to first do some troubleshooting. But what exactly does it mean? How are you supposed to know what to do?

Well, troubleshooting simply means isolating the problem you're experiencing so that you can work toward fixing it completely. Also, troubleshooting is mostly a process of elimination and it can often be going on a whim and just guessing what's wrong.

When you're having a problem with something within your computer system, you should first figure out where the problem lies and compile some possible reasons why it's happening. You should then investigate your reasons, starting with the most obvious or the most easiest to fix. Troubleshooting usually refers to a hardware problem (whereas debugging is related to software problems).

Let's say you've been having problems with your mouse. It basically just quit working as well as it usually does. So, what could be the problem? Well, to solve the issue, just start troubleshooting! The most obvious reason (to me, anyway) would be that it might just be a little dirty and it needs cleaned out. Another possible reason could be that the cord got a little loose and it just needs to be pushed back in. Or, it could be a power problem or the mouse could just be dead (hopefully that's not the case, but it does happen!) Now, start from the beginning. Clean out your mouse and if that doesn't help, try the next troubleshoot option. You'll eventually figure out what's wrong and be able to fix it.

If you ever have a problem that runs past any troubleshooting you can do on your own, there's always technical support from the manufacturer of the product. But you should always try to fix the problems yourself first. So, now that you know all about troubleshooting, give it a try for yourself today!

MS Office

Convert It to a Value

Do you have an MS Excel formula in a single cell that needs to be converted to its value?

No problem! Simply select the cell, press and release F2 and then press F9.

Voila! The cell contains the value of the formula and not the formula itself.

Unfortunately, you'll find that this little trick doesn't work for multiple cells. So, what now?

Tackling this one isn't as difficult as you might think. That is, if you dip into the Paste button tip from Friday.

First, select the cells you need to convert from formulas to values.

Now, copy the cells.

Without moving your cell selection, go to the Paste button, click on the down arrow and choose Values (Paste Values in Excel 2007) from the list.

Say goodbye to those formulas, because you just pasted their values back into the same cells you started with. Oh yeah!

Tip of the Day

Internet Explorer 7 History

Are you a new Internet Explorer 7 user? Or, perhaps you've been using it for awhile now. Either way, are you a little curious as to where the History feature went? I know I had that problem when I first started using IE 7. But then one day, I found it and I just knew I had to share my secret with all of you. So, if you've been searching for your IE 7 history for some time now, let's go find it together!

First of all, it's very normal to want to view your Web browser's history. I mean, maybe you want to have a look at a family member’s Internet usage. Or, perhaps you forgot the name of a great Web site you happened upon a couple weeks ago and you want to find it again. Or, maybe you just want to see how many Web sites you visit in a day. No matter what your reasons, it's a good idea to look at your browser history every now and then.

As you know, the History button has been removed from the Internet Explorer 7 toolbar. Because of that, it’s now much easier to cover your tracks (such as deleting your browsing history), but looking back has become a lot harder. That is, unless you know the shortcut! First, here’s the long version:

1.) In the top left hand corner, there's a small star icon. Go ahead and click on that.

2.) In the menu that pops up, click on the History drop down arrow and then choose By Date.

3.) There's your history! Go ahead, look it over and find what you need.

But of course, that method is a little tedious and you may not want to do all of that every time.

So, what's the simple solution, you ask? Well, the answer is Ctrl + H.

Yes, it’s that easy! Ctrl + H will bring up your History bar right away. Give it a try for yourself today!

Search Me

This is the neatest search engine I’ve come across in a long time! Even though it's still in the private beta stage, they are giving everyone instant access. Therefore, you will beta test the search engine as you use it and your feedback will help shape its future!

So, how do you get started? Well, I’d start by watching the demo video. It demonstrates how the search engine works, how you use it and how nifty it really is! The video will also help you figure out if Search Me is something that appeals to you and if it's something you would use or not.

To begin using the search engine, type in your e-mail address and click on the Get Started button. That will take you to the next page where you will confirm your e-mail address, create a password, provide your name (optional) and then click on the Register button. After all that, you’re registered!

You’ll now be in the Before You Get Started section. Here you’ll find five tips from the Search Me team. Follow the link to the private beta, which is the search engine’s page. Now, think of something you want to search for. I was eating pistachios at the time, so that’s what I looked up!

Once you’ve entered in your query, you’ll find your results under the Everything category. You’ll also see some helpful tips on the left side of the page. To narrow down your search, you can select to filter the results with one of the categories at the top of the page. I chose Blogs from the choices, because I was curious to see if people have written about pistachios in their blogs. What I found was a very interesting idea for pistachio marzipan cinnamon rolls. Very intriguing!

I love the fact that this is a visual search engine and you can see the actual Web pages as you flip through your results. It’s like sitting down with a magazine of search results on your topic!

I’d love to see this search engine grow and become mainstream! Check it out today. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
