Run With Vista Have you made the switch to the new operating system of Windows Vista yet? If you have, are you getting a little frustrated with being away from everything you knew in XP? I mean, going from XP to Vista is an extreme change and it can be very difficult getting used to all the new features. I know I felt that way when I first started working with Vista. I was so used to XP and I just felt like the two operating systems were like day and night. But, if you look past all that confusion, you'll find that there are a few things you can do with Vista to bring back the comfort of XP. (I'm not even kidding!) And as a matter of fact, I'm going to tell you how to do one of those right now. In Windows XP, a function I always use a lot is the Run command. It's just an easy feature to work with and it gets me where I need to go. Now, as I'm sure you've noticed, Vista doesn't offer the Run command. Or does it?! To get the Run option back for yourself, right click on the Start button in Vista and choose Properties. Make sure you're under the Start Menu tab and then click the Customize button. Scroll down near the bottom of that list and checkmark the box that says "Run command." Once you've done that, click OK. In the next window, click Apply, then OK again. Now, go and click your Start button. What do you see? Yep, the Run command is back and ready for some action. Yes! ~ Erin Make sure you keep reading to learn all about MP4s and what they can do for you, find out how you can easily see continuous text flow in MS Word and learn how you can create the desktop of your dreams. HEY!! Save Your Money! The Fun Way! Cool Jar Counts Your Spare Change! Really! Hey! We just got the coolest little gadget in! I absolutely love it! It's called The Money Machine and it's an electronic change jar that actually counts the money that's put into it! Told ya it was cool! After you pop in a set of "AA" batteries, you screw the lid on and drop your change in. Each time you pop a coin in, it shows the amount you added and more importantly, the total amount you've saved in your jar! It actually remembers this tally so each day when you drop your spare change into the jar, you'll be able to see at a glance how much you have saved! Once the jar is full, just take your change out and hit the reset button to start it over! It's fantastic! If you save your change for certain "goals" - like it goes towards spending money on a trip or maybe you're saving for a night out - whatever it is - this makes setting and getting that goal a lot of fun! Grab a few for your computer while they're still at this price! Q: A: But even though understanding everything gets a little difficult sometimes, it's not impossible. I promise that after today, you will fully understand one more computer term and you will be able to check it off your "find out what this is" list! Alright, let's get right into it! To start with a quick definition, MP4 files are compressed video files. Their main purpose is to make video files much smaller so that they are easier to work with and support. Video files used to be very big in size and they were very difficult to work with. But now, the same files are compressed with the same material and they go by the new name of MP4s. MP4 files work very similarly to MP3 files in that they are compressed files that do not affect the quality of sound. (In case you're not sure, MP3s are music and audio files, so an MP4 is just taking that to the next level with videos). The term MP4 is also known as MPEG-4 AVC, which stands for advanced video coding. Now, if you're still not sure how the whole MP4 technology works, make sure you keep reading, because it's going to get even more interesting, I promise! Since MP4s deal mostly with video files, they are a little more complex than the MP3 music and audio files. But, they are still able to be compressed by using special coding procedures. For example, certain aspects of the files are minimized. Those are usually the temporal and spatial redundancies. The motion and intra estimations of the frequencies are usually transformed as well. And last, but not least, the file goes through a lot of compression and decompression, which is referred to as codec. Now, I'm sure you're probably wondering if there's such a thing as an MP4 player, right? Well, yes there is. It works just like any other media player. You can purchase the device at any regular electronics store and you then just hook it up to your computer or television. It really is that easy, even if it doesn't seem like it! Of course, as with everything else, the MP4 technology has its ups and downs. Let's start with the advantages. MP4s are able to produce videos with a DVD quality at a rate of 1 Mbps or less with a broadband Internet connection. (That's blazing fast!) So, if you were to get an MP4 player, you could get your videos and watch them in a matter of seconds. MP4 players can also play older MP formats, including MP3 audio files. As for the disadvantages, there will more than likely be several piracy issues within the MP4 technology. The MP3 format went through this as well. As you may already know, there are pirated versions of movies on the Internet that are ready for download at any time. So, with MP4s mainly dealing with videos, the piracy problems are sure to get out of hand as this technology becomes more and more popular. Just keep an eye out for that! So, there it is. The MP4 technology explained for you in as simple of terms as I could come up with. I do hope you have a better understanding of this now and who knows, maybe you'll be the next person to start MP4ing around! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Some of us like the Normal view and others use the Web Layout view on a daily basis. If you're like me, you are a fan of the Print Layout view in Word. To me, that view is basically, "What you see is what you get," including the visibility of all the margins. I guess I just like to see each page as a representation of an actual piece of paper. Well, regardless of your reason for preferring the Print Layout view, I'm sure you've found times when it would be helpful to put the pages together. You know, to easily see the flow of the document and to know exactly how the text is flowing from page to page, without the visual disruption of the margins and spaces between the pages. At this point, I'm certain a few of you are thinking, "No problem. It's just a quick change in the View menu." Or, if you're aware of the View buttons in the bottom left corner of the program window, the change is just a quick click of the correct button. But, wouldn't it be nice to have the luxury of altering the Print Layout View's behavior for this purpose, anytime you choose? Yeah, I agree. I'd still rather see this view and just find a way to temporarily remove the top and bottom margins so that I can see how it's all coming together. Fortunately, for anyone with this line of thinking, there is a one click way to alter the Print Layout view to meet those requirements. What you're looking for is the Hide/Show White Space feature. Take your mouse pointer and slowly run it over the gap between the "pages" of your document. At some point, it should change to two inward pointing arrows and display this message: "Hide White Space" (Word 2007 says "Double Click to Hide White Space"). While you still have the double arrow, click to change this: Into this: Like magic, the document will change to display just a solid black line between the pages. Notice that the top and bottom margins of the pages are no longer visible, which gives you a full and uninterrupted view of how the text is flowing from page to page. Want your margins returned? No problem! Simply run the mouse pointer slowly over the black dividing line until the pointer changes again and displays this message: "Show White Space." (This time, the cursor changes into a double arrow pointing outward). One click here and your document is instantly returned to its original Print Layout view. Isn't it nice to know you have options?! ~ April
OK, I tend to run a pretty tight ship when it comes to my computer. I don't mess around. It's lean and mean - I don't have any excess files taking up space, no left over registry entries, no software hiding out on my HD, very few temp files, in short - no excess. Or so I thought! I ran Spring Cleaning and in about two minutes it recovered 4 GIG of space! I couldn't believe it! Just one click and I make a HUGE space gain on my hard drive! And that's only one of about 20 such buttons! So, next I was off to the registry section. I click Fix Registry expecting only to find a few minor problems. Wrong again! This time, it finds 608 entries that were no longer valid! The programs for them were long gone, but the entries remained! Clean up was just a click away. Now I'm thinking, "This is great, but what else is there?" So, I decide to check for duplicate files. Now, this time I'm sure the results are going to be light. Good thing I'm not a betting man! This software found a whopping 8,425 duplicate items (I was shocked)! Now, many of these files just share a name, so I left them alone. However, I still found a lot of stuff that I could easily clean out - and this program made it simple! In addition, this features a program uninstaller that's absolutely fantastic. It really puts the Windows add/remove programs utility to shame. Most uninstallers just get rid of the main program files. Lots of stuff gets left behind - especially registry entries. Well, this scans the program files and finds EVERYTHING! It even shows you what it's found - registry entries and all! A quick click and it's gone. This alone is enough reason to grab this title! And that's just the tip of the iceberg! This can also move programs to a new location on your computer, or transport them to another PC! It can compress programs that you don't use often to save space, backup programs, give you graphs for storage usage, and tons more! To say I'm impressed with this software would be the understatement of the year! This thing is AWESOME! My windows install really isn't all that old (3 months), but this software managed to find literally thousands of ways to make it better. Oh, almost forgot - it's designed to make it easy for everyone to work with too! It has automatic settings for just about every function, but also gives power users advanced options. Take a look at all this can do: This software is just fantastic. It can really help you to recover wasted space and get things running better. If you are using Windows, this is something you've got to try! Your cost is just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version and retails for $30, so you're getting an amazing deal on a piece of software that' a must have! It's the best $8.97 you'll ever spend on your PC! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=1856 PS - I personally can't believe how much space was gained by using this software. Then to eliminate a ton of duplicate files and fix over 600 registry problems, all I can say is WOW! Make sure you stop by our homepage sometime today to see what's new. There's a brand new Tip of the Day and a new Cool Site of the Day, so check it out! Here's the link you need: http://www.worldstart.com/ Enjoy! Create Your Own Desktop Here's another oldie, but goodie for you. (Plus, I've gotten a lot of requests for this one and it'll be a really good refresher course for some of you!) Are you tired of the desktop picture you currently have? If you are, why don't you spice it up a little?! It's really not hard to do at all. Just read this tip through and you'll be a desktop changin' pro in no time. I bet you'll be changing your desktop image every week now! The fastest and easiest way I've found to do this is to right click on your desktop and select Properties. From the resulting window, click on the Display tab. You can go ahead and scroll through the list of images that the Windows XP people kindly provided and you can also preview them in the top window. Feel free to change the Position mode from Stretch (one big picture) to Tile (many little pictures) to Center (one small picture in the center of your desktop with a hand picked color filling in the background). Now, if you want to use a picture that you have saved on your computer, simply click the Browse button and an Open window will appear. It will default to your My Documents/My Pictures folder, but you can browse through other folders via the Look in: box at the top. Once you've found the picture you want, click on it and then click the Open button. This will take you back to the Display Properties window and you should see a preview of your brand new desktop. When you have things looking just the way you want them, click Apply, OK and just like that, you'll have have an all new desktop to love and enjoy. It doesn't get any better than that! Have fun creating the desktop of your dreams! ~ Steve If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing. Focal Length and Magnification Factors When people talk about lenses, they talk about focal length. This is basically a measurement that will help you determine how far your zoom can "reach" or how much of that great scenery your wide angle lens will encompass. For those who wonder how it's figured out, it's the distance from the "optical center" of the lens to the point where it is focused when set to infinity. (No, we're not talking luxury cars here. Setting a lens' focus to "infinity" simply means to focus a lens at its furthest distance). Don't worry, you don't need to know or understand any of that to figure out how this works! :-) Here's the practical application: the smaller the focal length of a lens, the more it can "see" and the more "stuff" you can get in the photo. Small focal length lenses are commonly referred to as "wide angle" lenses. On the other hand, the higher the number, the less the lens is able to "see" and the closer your subject looks. These are usually referred to as "long" or "telephoto" lenses. Back when 35mm cameras ruled the roost and digicams were only cute "toys," focal length made it easy to compare one lens to another. If it was a 28mm lens, it was a wide angle lens. If it was a 300mm, it was a telephoto lens. It was simple because the size of a 35mm negative was the same from camera to camera. A 50mm lens on one camera "picked up" the same scene as a 50mm lens on a different camera Now that digicams are taking over, the game has changed. This is because of the size difference with the various image sensors out there. You see, a smaller sensor doesn't "see" as much of the scene as a larger sensor does. In essence, it's cropping in, which is called the magnification factor. Since sensor sizes range all over the board, the image you get with a 28mm setting on one camera will probably look completely different on another. Note: In the photos above, although the lens sees the exact same thing, the camera with the red sensor captures more of the scene than the camera with the blue sensor. Both were taken with a 28mm lens, but the results are very different. Fortunately, a lot of manufactures are starting to give the 35mm equivalent ranges when they discuss their equipment. So, instead of saying a camera has a 7mm/28m lens, they give you the 35mm equivalent of 28mm/112mm. So, if you see a camera that has 35mm equivalent focal lengths listed, here's a chart to help you decide if you have enough lens. 35mm Lens Chart: 12-20 - Ultra Wide Angle 24-35 - Wide Angle 40-80 - Normal lens 90-135 - Short Telephoto 150-250 - Medium Telephotos 300+ - Longer Telephotos Okay, if you're shooting with a regular digicam, that's about all you need to know. However, if you have a digital SLR (you can take the lenses on and off), you'll want to read on. Most digital SLRs do not have a full frame sensor. This means there is a magnification factor with any given lens. Normally, this is around 1.5, so we'll use that for our example. Check your owner's manual for the exact number. Anyhow, here's what happens with this magnification factor. Let's say you have a 200mm lens. If your camera has a mag factor of 1.5x, that means you take the focal length of the lens (200) and multiply it by 1.5. In this case, your 200mm is now equivalent to a 300mm. Cool! Now the bad news. If you like taking wide angle shots, this works against you. For example, that 24mm lens you liked so much on your 35mm camera now looks like a 36mm lens (gasp!) In order to get back to 24, you'd need to fork over lots of dead presidents for a 16mm lens! That pain you just felt was from your wallet. So, if you're into long lenses, you'll probably like the magnification factor. If not, you may need to start stitching images together. Short of that, most manufacturers now have special "digital only" lenses that don't cost as much as the standard 35mm equipment (won't work on it properly either). They aren't necessarily cheap, but it may be worth looking into. Oh, there are cameras that have a full frame CMOS sensor, so there is no magnification factor. Unfortunately, they sell for $7,000+ so it's probably cheaper to buy some new lenses. :-) Geez, I talk too much! This site is not necessarily for everyone, as it is describing slang, but I found it, because I heard a song on the radio talking about showing someone your grill and had no idea what it meant. Meanings of grill: 1.) Teeth I was highly confused, so I had to find somewhere to look it up and I found this site. I think this site is also handy for monitoring the slang coming out of your children’s mouths. My mom wouldn’t let us use slang around the house. We always had to speak perfect English. This is what comes of having a teacher for a mom. I am extremely grateful that she did, because It made me better able to communicate. There are several ways to surf this site. The easiest way is to type in the word you want to define in the dictionary, like I did. Put in the term you want to define and click the search button. Or, you can go through alphabetically, A-Z, and browse slang words by letter. Or you can click Random at the very end of the A to Z listing and get a random word. There are also random listings that change on the main page. I wouldn’t want my children using a lot of this terminology, that is for sure. Another warning that I just noticed: some of the examples do have profanity in them, so I wouldn’t recommend showing this site to kids. http://www.urbandictionary.com/ ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
