Dear Visitor, A study published in December in the Nature journal, Scientific Reports, backed up what we already intuitively know to be true about our politic beliefs: the more people try to argue us out of them, the harder we hang on. This is true because our political beliefs are strongly related to our personal identity and our perceived position in the social order. If someone tries to get us to leave our tribe, we feel threatened, and we dig in. People who are more resistant to changing their beliefs fire different activity in their brains, specifically in the amygdalae and the insular cortex. This is my favorite paragraph from the article about the study on the ScienceDaily site: ""Political beliefs are like religious beliefs in the respect that both are part of who you are and important for the social circle to which you belong," said lead author Jonas Kaplan, an assistant research professor of psychology at the Brain and Creativity Institute at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. "To consider an alternative view, you would have to consider an alternative version of yourself."" Read that last sentence again, because within it lies a key to creating what we want in life. Is your belief about who you are and what you are intending unshakeable? If someone tries to tell you—including yourself!—that you'll never be this or that, or you'll never do or have this or that, do you listen to them? Or are your beliefs so firmly embedded that it doesn't matter what anybody says or does, you still know you will prevail? Are you wasting your most solid beliefs on things you can't control? What if you staked out your claim to your own future and refused to be moved? What if you REFUSED to be confused, or relent, or suffer from cognitive dissonance? What if you decided that ambivalence was no longer in your vocabulary? Get clear about what you want and whom you will be, and then own it. There is a biology to belief! Be a hardhead! Wishing you every possibility!
