Quick Tips

Laptop USB Connections

Do you use a laptop as your main computer? If so, do you ever get tired of the small keyboard that comes with it or do you struggle with the touchpad mouse? I know both of those things have really hindered my laptop experience. That is, until I found out there was a way to work around all of that and now, I couldn't be happier with my laptop! Want to know how you can do that too? Well, keep reading to find out!

First of all, this tip is for those of you who have a newer laptop with USB ports. If you have an older laptop with other port options, this will not work for you. Okay, so the good news is even though you have a laptop, you can still use a regular (PS/2) keyboard, mouse, etc. with it! Most keyboards and mice come with a PS/2 port connector, which obviously will not fit into a USB port. So, all you have to do is get a cable that has one PS/2 end and one USB end. You then just plug the USB side into your laptop and put the PS/2 end of your mouse or keyboard into the other side.

Once you've done that, you will have a bigger keyboard and mouse to use while you work on your laptop! There are also cables like that for printers and a few other devices. But if you're only looking for a keyboard and mouse, there are some cables that have both of those all in one package. (That's what I use with my laptop!) You can find those cables at any regular computer store, like Best Buy or Radio Shack, for example. So, if you're not ready to go with a wireless keyboard or mouse just yet, give this a try. It's the perfect solution to bring your regular computer comfort to your laptop as well. Yes!

Fantastic New Office Suite Software Will Blow You Away!

Thinking About Overpriced MS Office? Forget It!

Get The Power Of MS Office - Just $10.97!

Lowest Price EVER - Today ONLY! (08-28-2008)

You Just Gotta See This! Absolutely Incredible!!

Oh WOW! I gotta tell ya - I'm REALLY (REALLY) EXCITED about this one! We just got Office Suite 2007 in stock (powered by OpenOffice) and let me tell ya - this thing is just incredible! It not only has EVERY feature you'd want in an office suite, it's almost a give-away price too!

First off, this version is absolutely fantastic - I can't believe how impressed I continue to be with this software! I like it WAAYYY better than MS Office 2007! The power and ease of use is just phenomenal, really blowing MS Office right out of the water!

What do you get? Well, EVERYTHING! This includes an absolutely fantastic word processor, a spreadsheet program on steroids (it just stomps Excel), presentation software that's second to none, an incredible drawing program, an advanced calculating program, and even a souped-up, high-end database! It can even create PDFs with the push of a button from most applications! WOW! To get even close to that with MS office you'd be looking at a small fortune!

1

I was using the the other day with a friend and for the first half-hour he thought we were using MS Office. Finally he looked at it a little closer and said, "Hey - what program is this?" I told him about it - and how inexpensive it was - and he was blown away! He couldn't believe that you could get a program like this for less than $15!! In fact, at first he thought I was kidding around. Well, he's got a few on the way for himself now! Why shell out $400 - $800 for MS Office when you can get this for a small fraction of the cost?

2

I know we're going to be using it here at the office when we have a new computer arrive. We used to shell out $400+ just so we could use Word and Excel! This is actually BETTER and the low cost is just unreal!

Two of the main components are a top notch. You just gotta check out the Word Processor and a Spreadsheet Program. Both look a LOT like MS Word and MS Excel - in fact, if you just open it up and ignore the title bar, you'd swear that you were using an improved version of MS Office! It's THAT good. Oh, and like I said, this also comes with a phenomenal presentation program, drawing program, database and MORE! Let's look at the main two everyone use though - I just want to give you an idea why this program is sooo great!

The Word Processor is just fantastic! I mean, it really has everything - a spell checker, grammar checker, thesaurus, auto text, tables, password protection, mail merge, easy font selection, auto numbering, etc. Plus, everything is very intuitive - it just seems like things are where you expect them to be and work the way you'd expect them to work. It's like the person who wrote the software actually uses the software!

4

It also has a fantastic built-in HTML editor for web pages that works seamless with the word processor, a really easy to use tool to insert shapes, and more! Here's what I love ~ you can turn your document into a PDF file with the click of one button ~ this is a terrific feature!!

Oh, and wait till you see the Spreadsheet Program! It looks and functions just like MS Excel! Even the menus are virtually identical - everything you're used to doing in Excel can be done just as quickly here. TONS of built-in formulas, formatting, and functions at your fingertips. Create charts in just a few mouse clicks, filter data easily, send spreadsheets via e-mail, you name it, this can do it! You'll never need Excel again (or wan to use it for that matter)!!

5

The really cool thing is that all of this is 100% MS Office Compatible. It not only opens MS Office files (.doc, .xls) but can also save in that format! That way, you don't need to have MS Office to create or save MS Office documents. Cool huh?

I tell ya what - I could go on and on about this one - it's really one of the most - if not the most - powerful office suites I've ever had the privilege of using! I'm really excited about having it on my computer and I can't recommend this highly enough! If you need office software, you just gotta give this a try!

Oh, your cost? Glad you asked!  TODAY ONLY get this for just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's almost a give-away for that kind of money - especially when you think that MS Office is $400-$800!! Try it, you'll thank me later :-)

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4134

PS - Make sure you give this a try! For $10.97, you just can't go wrong! It'll surprise ya - Heck, it still surprises me on a daily basis! I love it!

Computers 101

Q:
Please help! I don't know if my computer has a CD burner or not. How can I tell?

A:
Great question! I've actually been getting a lot of e-mails about this lately, so I'm glad you brought it up. So, if you're not sure if your computer has a CD burner or not, keep reading for a simple way to find out!

There are a couple things you can do. For starters, you can open up your CD/DVD ROM drive and look on the front of the tray. There should be some sort of logo written on the very front of the tray telling you if it's a burner or not. If it just says something like "CD Drive," there probably isn't a burner there. If it says CD/DVD R-RW, you do have a burner. That's the easiest way to tell.

The other thing you can do is look in the Device Manager. To get there, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Choose Properties and then click on the Hardware tab. Once you're there, click on the Device Manager button and you will be taken to a list of all the hardware you have on your system. Double click on DVD/CD ROM Drive to expand it. If an extension comes up that says something like CD-RW or DVD-RW, you have a burner. If anything comes up at all, you more than likely already have a burner in your computer.

Once you figure out if you have one or not, you just need some burning software and you can go to town, burning CDs and DVDs as you wish. Some burners are external, so you may have that option as well. Most newer computers automatically come with a burner, but otherwise, you have to request one to be installed on your computer. If you don't remember requesting one, you probably don't have one, but you can use the above guidelines to know for sure!

MS Office

Excel Dates Done Your Way

Okay, so you're frustrated with the standard MS Excel date formats and you're looking for a way to meet your needs.

Well, that frustration ends here!

Today, I've got just the information you need to make Excel do things your way.

First, you need to select the cells that should be in the date format.

In older versions of Excel, you need to go to the Format menu, Cells choice (both Ctrl + 1 or a right click and then the Format Cells choice will work too).

In Excel 2007, you can use the right click with the Format Cells choice or Ctrl + 1 or click on the little down arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the Number section under the Home tab on the ribbon.

At any rate, everyone should be looking for the Number tab in the Format Cells dialogue window.

On the left side, you'll find the list of categories. Choose Custom from the list.

You can scroll through the Type choices on the right, just to see if your needs can be met with what's there. But, if not, don't worry. I have the information to get exactly the formatting you need.

At this point, you probably need to know the symbols for the date formats. (After all, you can't create custom formats if you don't know the "lingo"). So, let's take a look at the Excel date "lingo!"

Date codes:

d will give a day number (1, 2, 3, 4 ... 30, 31)
dd will give the day number as a two digit number (01, 02 ... 30, 31)
ddd will give the day of the week, abbreviated (Mon, Tue, etc).
dddd will give the full word for the day (Monday, Tuesday, etc).

Month codes:

m will give the month number (1, 2, 3 ... 11, 12)
mm will give the month as a two digit number (01, 02 ... 12)
mmm will give the name of the month, abbreviated (Jan, Feb, etc).
mmmm will give the full name of the month (January, February, etc).
mmmmm will give just the first letter of the month name (J, F, M, A, etc).

Year codes:

yy will give the year in two digits (07, 08, etc).
yyyy will give the year as four digits (2003, 2004, etc).

Okay, so you've got the codes to create your custom date formatting, but what do you do with them?

Well, when you clicked into the Custom category, you might have noticed on the right, under the word Type, a field appeared that will allow you to enter your formatting.

All you have to do is replace whatever is currently in the field and put in a combination of codes that will give you a date the way you need it.

For example, if you enter dddd, mmmm d, yyyy into the Type field, data entered as 5-26-06 in a cell will be displayed as Friday, May 26, 2006.

Did you notice that the commas and spaces I inserted into the code showed up in the date?

Yes? Good! It's also true of other characters you use to separate your code components, such as dashes and slashes. (That's just a little tidbit of information that might come in handy some day).

You also might want to notice the preview box (labeled as Sample), located just above the Type field.

If there was data in a selected cell when you started, you can see how it's coming along as you're entering your custom code. It lets you check your progress, so you don't find out after you've left the window that you have a wrong format.

When you have everything set, click OK.

You're returned to your worksheet where all of the dates in the selected area are just the way you want them!

Finally The Perfect Sized Extension Cord!!!

Amazing 6 Foot USB Extension Cord

Even More of An Amazing Price

Just $8.97

Check It Out

Lets Talk Frustration. Just the other week, I was rearranging my office. Once I had everything placed exactly how I wanted it, there was a huge problem. The USB cord from my printer couldn't reach to my computer. No matter how much I tried to stretch and bend the cord, it was just not going to fit. I spent a little over an hour making my office perfect, only to have to try to find a closer, more convenient place for my printer. Yes, I was frustrated.

If you have ever had these similar kind of frustrations,we have found the perfect solution to all of those woes- this 6 foot USB extension cord. You will never have to struggle with cords that are too short while connecting your printer, scanner, drive or adapter. Plus, with 6 feet of cord, you have the perfect length of cord to set up your desk just the way you like it.

Oh!!! I just love the length of this extension cord. I can easily plug in any USB device without creating a cordy mess behind my computer. Think about it, with the typical 16 foot cord, how much extra cord just lies behind the computer getting tangled with every other cord hidden behind your desk? 10+ feet? That is why this cord is so nice! It really is the perfect size!

Finally, I have to tell you about the data transfer speed. Let's just say I was shocked with how fast this extension cable really works! The high performance 20-Gauge power wires supports data transfer speed of up to 12 Mbps. Now that is super fast!!!

I am telling you- you will just love this extension cord! 6 foot is the perfect length! I have just ordered two. One to plug in my printer about 6 feet away from my computer, and I can't believe how much this has really opened up my desk. The second one I used to plug in a 4 port hub on top of my desk, allowing me extra access to several USB ports! I just love this cord.

And the price is amazing! Just $8.97, and as always, US Shipping is Free!! Check out the site for more information!

We're talking over 1000 pre-made, ready-for-your-photos templates!

Plus, I think these templates are really a cut above what I've seen in most programs - it's like they gave you the "premium" templates or something! See, most of your print programs are going to give you a lot of templates - but you and I know that in a lot of cases these are just kinda, well, blah (Is that a word? Well, better than the one I had in mind!). Anyhow, wait till you see the quality of these - they're just amazing! I kid you not - people are going to think you took your photos to a printer and had these projects made and printed professionally! You'll see!

Oh, and it's sooo much more than just print projects! One feature I think is just brilliant is the way you can arrange a number of different photos on a page for REALLY easy printing! It makes getting multiple sized photos printed out on a single page easy - and you save a TON of paper!

This also has a fantastic image gallery! It's really easy to import and use your own photos - just pick the photos you want in your gallery and you're good to go! To use a photo, it's as easy as drag and drop! Plus, if you don't have the image you want, this includes over 40,000 others for you to pick from! WOW!!

What if you have an digital photo, but it needs a little something extra? Well, this lets you crop, get rid of red eye, adjust brightness and contrast, sharpen, and more!

PLUS it has these really great special effect and filters! I really like the Sepia filter, but you can do a B&W conversion, add a red, green, blue, or whatever color filter, add a number of really cool textures (wait till you see the effects - really stunning), and even do some "special" stuff like warping, twisting, bending - and a TON of other fun stuff!

Oh, Oh - I gotta tell you about ease of use - it's really fantastic! I've been playing with this a lot and have never needed to even glance in the direction of the help file! Everything is SOOOOOO easy to understand! All the controls you need to make incredible projects - not a bunch of stuff that just gets in the way!

I mean, a lot of this is really just drag and drop for images, move things around with your mouse, add text with the push of a button - everything is REALLY easy to understand! The results - just amazing! If you print onto photo paper, people will swear it was done professionally! It just blew me totally away!

OK, killer program - but what's your cost? Well, we got an amazing deal on this one - JUST $7.97!!Head to the site and check it out - you just can't go wrong for that kind of money!

Tip of the Day

Google Global

Do you sometimes wish you could see what the people in England are seeing on Google? Maybe it’s for search engine optimization or perhaps you’re just curious. Either way, I have a quick and safe way for you to take a peek at the other side of the world. It’s all done through a Firefox add on called Google Global. Let's check it out!

1.) To begin, click here.

2.) Next, click on the Install Now button to install the Firefox add on.

3.) Firefox will warn you about installing the software, but it’s just a plug-in for Firefox, so you don’t need to worry about it. It's virus and spyware free! Just click Allow and then click on the Install button again.

4.) Then simply wait for the add on to install.

5.) Restart your Firefox browser and you’re done. Now, let's test it out!

Google Global is a little menu bar that pops up when you right click. Here’s a really interesting example that shows you just how Google targets search results for your region.

1.) Go to Google and search for "Prime Minister."

2.) Now, take a look at your URL. It should look something like this:

Number one is my Google country-specific domain name (.com.au). For the U.S., it’s .com, for the UK, it's .co.uk and so on.

Number two (gl=AU) is even more important and you’ll see why in a moment.

Take a look at the top result for "Prime Minister" with my Australian settings:

Now, that’s no coincidence!

3.) Right click and hover over Search Google Global. A small list of countries will pop up and you can expand it if you'd like.

4.) Then choose a country (I’m going to use the UK for my example, because they have a prime minister as well). A new tab should pop up. Now, look at the URL:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=prime+minister&pws=0&gl=UK

.co.uk is Britain’s country-specific Google site, but just going to google.co.uk every time you want to search won’t work. The important part of the URL is the gl=UK bit. That tells Google you’re in the UK. Pretty clever, huh?! Lo and behold, the first result for a UK Google search for "Prime Minister" is the UK prime minister’s Web site.

Of course, that’s a really small example of what you can do with Google Global, but now, you have something else to play around with. Have fun!

Today's Feature

Webmynd

This week, I have found a free Firefox add on for you called Webmynd (pronounced "Web Mind"). This powerful add on keeps track of your browsing history and it organizes it in a way I've never seen done before!

When you visit a Web site, Webmynd keeps track of and stores a snapshot of the site you visited. It organizes the history by site and it allows you to visually "look" through your history to find the site you visited before. I have only been using Webmynd for a short time, but it has already helped me tremendously!

On top of its history capability, it also enhances your search. When you do a search on Google, it automatically gives you search results from Webmynd and del.icio.us. This add on is great for those of you who do a lot of Web browsing.

You can download Webmynd for yourself right here. Enjoy!
