Dear Visitor, Here's something you should know about me: I drive fast. The Florida state police have very extravagant Christmas parties because of me. Why would I do something so stupid, you might ask? Well, one person's stupid is another person's joy. I love it! I love the concentration it takes, the skill, and the sheer speed of it. I love it so much, in fact, that this past summer I decided I needed to take my need for speed to the racetrack and amp it up a bit. Fortunately, there's a 3-step program for people like me, and it's called the Richard Petty Driving Experience. In this experience, you get behind the wheel of a NASCAR stock car, and take eight laps at high speed around a professional racetrack. I found myself at the Homestead Miami Speedway, which any NASCAR lover will tell you is a seriously professional track. Here are the steps: you pay, you train, you drive. You get about an hour of training, which consists of an introduction to the car, the track, and the flags. There are several flags you might get as you race around the track. The one I dreaded most was the rolled up green flag, held snugly in the hand of the flagger, and waved in a circular motion. It means, "get your butt in gear!" I never saw this flag. I also didn't see the flag that told me I wasn't following my instructor closely enough. What I did get was a bunch of wave-offs from my instructor, which means, "you're following too closely." This is good, because it means you are going the right speed. If you drop back just a bit, you're at the perfect following distance. Four or five wave-offs is great, said our instructor, because it shows you're not afraid of the speed, the track or the car. Ten or eleven wave-offs probably means you have impulse control problems. I managed to control myself, but I can tell you that I wanted to go faster. I thought possibly that they were holding me back because I am a girl, but it more likely had to do with their liability coverage. Even with the instructor controlling my speed, I drove at an estimated top speed of 135 miles per hour, and averaged about 120 around the track. (You have to slow down for those turns.) I had also decided that I would ride as a passenger before I got behind the wheel myself. The professional driver I rode with took me right up to 165 miles per hour. He stayed right on the wall, so close it seemed impossible that he wouldn't hit it and send us careening across the track in a fiery, out-of-control spin. It scared the pants off me. The track, the wall, and my life all passed before my eyes in a blur. I remember thinking to myself, "You want me to do THIS?? What have I gotten myself INTO??" Maybe I should have taken the ride after I'd driven on the track myself, because it amped up my nervous tension about driving enormously. Bu maybe not. Because the point of me getting behind the wheel of a stock car and driving it insanely fast was to laugh at my comfort zone, blow out of the envelope, and expand the possibilities. If I truly believe that I am a Possibility Being, I have to act like one. Or more to the point, I get to act like one. I can throw off all the limitations that society/my brain/my mother have imposed on me, and drive as fast as I want. Well, as fast as the track's insurance company will let me. So my question to you is, what are you doing to get yourself comfortable with being on The Edge? What activities do you have planned for yourself for the specific purpose of increasing your risk tolerance? If you want to innovate your life, Risk Taking 101 is a prerequisite. When I got off the track that night and headed home, I found myself driving my Acura 3.2 TL with the pedal to the metal and laughing hysterically. Luckily, no state or local police were in the immediate vicinity. :-) Wishing you every possibility! --Kim Check out my blog at http://www.possibilitiesamplified.com/blog/!
