Computer Tips [ Huge Security Breach + Solve Driver Nightmares + Your E-mail – Is It Getting Read? + Taskbar Tuneup ] 04/06/2008

Quick Tips

E-mail Read Receipts

When you send out e-mails, do you ever wonder if they actually get read or not? E-mail is great, but sometimes it leaves us in the dark. How are we supposed to know if a recipient really read the message we sent? Sometimes it's important for you to know and that's where e-mail read receipts come into play! Before I go on, I just want to make sure you all know this tip only works in Outlook Express. Okay, let's begin!

There are two ways you can request a read receipt when using Outlook Express. The first one goes along with just an individual message. For that, click Create Mail to get a new message started. Next, go ahead and type in the recipient's e-mail address and whatever you'd like to say. When you're done, go up to the Tools menu and choose Request Read Receipt. Outlook Express will then inform you when the message has been read by the recipient.

The second method you can use is to put a read receipt request on every single message you send out. To do that, go to Tools, Options. Once you're there, click on the Receipts tab and checkmark the box that says "Request a return receipt for all sent messages." Click OK and you're all set! OE will notify you each time one of your e-mails has been opened and read. This is helpful for all those urgent messages you send out on a daily basis. Plus, it's kind of fun to see how long it takes someone to respond to you. Check it out!

HEY!! Save Your Money!

The Fun Way!

Cool Jar Counts Your Spare Change!

Really!

Hey! We just got the coolest little gadget in! I absolutely love it! It's called The Money Machine and it's an electronic change jar that actually counts the money that's put into it! Told ya it was cool!

After you pop in a set of "AA" batteries, you screw the lid on and drop your change in. Each time you pop a coin in, it shows the amount you added and more importantly, the total amount you've saved in your jar!

It actually remembers this tally so each day when you drop your spare change into the jar, you'll be able to see at a glance how much you have saved! Once the jar is full, just take your change out and hit the reset button to start it over! It's fantastic!

If you save your change for certain "goals" - like it goes towards spending money on a trip or maybe you're saving for a night out - whatever it is - this makes setting and getting that goal a lot of fun! To me, this alone is worth the price! I'm saving up for a fun date with my wife (psst - don't tell her :-) - what are you going to save for?

I really like this item, but I think my kids are in love! I got them each one and they are always putting any spare change they get into it - way better than having them spend it on candy or something! It actually makes saving money fun!

OK, it's cool - and ya gotta have it - but how much? Well, you're gonna love this! For a limited time, you can get it from us for Just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's a great deal and makes keeping track of how much you have saved sooo easy - and a lot of fun! Check it out:

PS - This is a new item for us, and ya know they can go QUICK! Head to the site and pick one up - you'll be glad you did! I like it a LOT more than I expected to - now I won't be without one!

From editing, to printing, to making CD slide shows, to e-mailing photos, to print projects (calendars, greeting cards, photo books, etc.) - THIS REALLY has you covered! I can't remember when I've been this impressed with a photo editor - or when I've found one this easy to use!

OK, first off it really is a fantastic photo editor. We have people asking all the time for a program that isn't too complicated but can do the "normal" stuff most people do with their photos - this is it! You can crop, rotate, get rid of red-eye, adjust brightness, sharpen, tweak color, enhance contrast, create TON of special effects, and even cut out objects in one photo an display them into another with ease - and that's only a few of the features! I can honestly say I've never seen an easier to use photo editor - it's just sooo easy to use!

Most software stops there, but not this!

In addition to the amazing photo editor, this also can help you do some pretty cool things with your photos. We're talking cool stuff like
creating photo frames, adding clip art to photos, and even putting in your own text message!

PLUS - You can also do a ton of projects too. This includes tools for doing calendars, photo books, greeting cards, photo montages, multimedia e-mail cards, and even a tool to create panorama photos! Now THAT'S COOL! Check out this great calendar page I made in just a few minutes:

What if you want to send a photo via e-mail? This covers ya! You can have the software automatically resize the photo for easy e-mail viewing, or just send along a full size file. Whatever you want, it can do - and it's only a couple mouse clicks to do it! Super-easy!!

That's not all - this can also create CD or DVD slide shows using your photos! You do NOT need a DVD Writer either - just a CD-R or RW will do! You just select the photos you want in the slide show and in a couple clicks you're burning your Video CD or DVD. From there, just pop it into any standard DVD player and see a fantastic slide show! We've featured software that did JUST this and it cost the same!

Finally, just wait till you see the printing - I think this might be my favorite part! You pick a size and it will automatically fit as many photos on the page as possible! Make multiple prints of the same image or put as many different images as you like (or can fit) on a page! Easily the best, most versatile program we've seen for printing photos! It's fantastic!

Again, your price for all of this? Just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! For everything this includes, that's more than a steal! I can't say enough good things about this one - give it a try, you'll really love it!

Q:
I just recently started using Windows Vista and I've been having trouble with some of the drivers associated with my hardware. I know I should be able to use the Device Manager to fix those things, but I'm not quite sure where to start. Can you please help? Thank you so much!

A:
Excellent question! First, I'd like to welcome you to the world of Windows Vista. I know it was probably a big step to make the upgrade, but you did it and now you're on your way to learning all there is to know about your new operating system. How exciting is that?! Plus, I know you're not the only one who has recently made the switch over to Vista, so today's question will really help you and a lot of other new users. Below you will find a simple explanation on how to actually find the Device Manager, along with a few troubleshooting techniques for some common issues you may run into. Okay, here we go!

To begin, let's open up the Device Manager. In Windows Vista, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the System and Maintenance link. Next, click on the System link and then on the left hand side under the Tasks pane, click on Device Manager. That will open a window that lists all of your computer's hardware. You'll see all of your computer's adapters, ROM drives, your keyboard, your mouse, the controllers, the USB ports, etc. Anything that has to do with your computer's hardware will be listed there. In short, it will look something like this:

Now, let's get back to the question at hand. If you've been having trouble with the drivers for some of your computer's hardware, there are three common issues that come into play. Chances are, your problem lies within one of them, so let's get down to it!

1.) Certain Hardware is Not Listed - The first problem arises when hardware you expected to find is not listed. If something is left off the list, it's likely the hardware was not installed correctly. In that case, you should power down your computer and find the actual hardware device. Take some time to make sure it is hooked up correctly and then restart your computer. Once you do that, Vista should automatically recognize the hardware and it will go through the installation process again. You may be asked for the hardware's drivers during the new installation, so just make sure you have those ready to go as well. When the installation is done, you should now see the hardware listed under the Device Manager.

2.) You See a Yellow Exclamation Point - It's possible that when you get the Device Manager open, you'll see a few entries that have yellow exclamation points next to them. When that happens, it means the hardware is installed correctly and Windows recognizes it, but it's still not working properly. This type of thing usually involves a driver error, so you just need to update your drivers. To do that, right click on the hardware (the one that has the exclamation point next to it) and choose Properties. Next, click on the Driver tab and then the Update Driver button. From there, click on the option that says "Search automatically for updated driver software." Vista will then look for the correct updated drivers for your hardware device and install them for you. If Windows can't find any, you will need to go to the manufacturer's Web site and download them there.

3.) The Dreaded Red X Appears - If you have a hardware device with a red X next to it, you're dealing with a disabled piece of hardware. To fix that, simply right click on the hardware and choose Enable. That will start up the hardware and you can begin using it like normal once again.

That's it! Working through all of these troubleshooting techniques should fix your hardware issues within your Device Manager. Luckily, they're all fairly easy to do and they deliver results. Give them a try today!

MS Office

Many Task Panes in One

Are you using Office XP or 2003? Ever notice how the Task Pane switches from the New Document list to another feature, such as inserting clip art, when you activate them? Wouldn't it be nice to know how to get the Task Pane to switch any time you'd like?

If you're thinking it might not be a bad idea to understand the "little monster" to the right of your document just a little bit better, take a look at the top of the Task Pane. See the down arrow just to the left of the X that closes it?

Go ahead and click on that down arrow.

A list of different features will open, allowing you to choose the part of the Task Pane you need.

Select one.

Obviously, the New Document material has disappeared. You could use the down arrow to get it back, but you don't have to. (You don't want it to be too far away though, because it can be pretty helpful).

Take a look in the left corner of the Task Pane's title bar.

The left and right arrows will let you switch between the feature you just chose and the New Document Task Pane.

There you have it. Control over the Task Pane like you've never seen before!

Tip of the Day

Buying an Inkjet Printer: Dos and Don'ts

Are you in the market to buy a new inkjet printer? If so, I urge you to take the following suggestions with you when you go shopping. They are dos and don'ts that are sure to save you from disappointment! They're also very simple and easy to implement. Continue reading for the full scoop!

Quality Speaks for Itself

Often times, we ask for the best without realizing we don’t really need that kind of technology. Take printing, for example. You don’t really need high quality printing if you're in the business of printing large pictures and photographs. It’s enough for individuals and even small businesses to go for a medium quality printer that prints just as well. Print quality is nothing but the number of dots per inch. So, the greater the number, the higher the print quality will be.

For a printer, this is as important as the ink that goes with it. The best way to judge this is to ask if the printer you're buying needs a separate set of ink cartridges for good quality prints. If the vendor says, "yes," it's likely the regular ink cartridges are filled with inferior quality ink and you should avoid buying a printer like that. The next step is to actually take some paper and test the print quality yourself. What usually happens is that vendors conduct the trial by printing the photo on very high quality photo paper. So, when you see the very same photo printed on plain paper, you will immediately know if the printer and ink are inferior. If there are ink smears or the edges are blurred, you'll know for sure that the printer is not good enough for you.

Speed Matters

This one is also a matter of volumes. If you run a small office or if your printing needs are limited, ignore this tip. On the other hand, if your work requires you to print 20 pages a minute (which could be true if you have a small printing press), it makes sense to look at the print speed, which is usually measured by the number of pages per minute. Be it 10 pages a minute or 20 pages a minute, this kind of speed works wonders if you have a high volume business where printing means everything.

Replacement Costs

Here is the real scam! Most printer manufacturers sell printers very cheap, only to make up for it by manufacturing costly ink cartridges. So, before you choose a printer, be sure to find out the cost of the ink cartridge as well. If it’s outrageous, skip it and go for the next brand and then keep at it until you find a printer that’s cheap on both ends. You know, something that works just a little bit better for you!

Happy printer shopping!

Today's Feature

An ActiveX Heads Up

Here's a heads up to everyone out there who uses Internet Explorer, MySpace or Facebook. Listen up!

It seems there has been a major flaw discovered in six different ActiveX controls for Internet Explorer that could cause some major problems for your computer. The flaws are not from some little, no-name Web sites either. We are talking about MySpace.com and Facebook.com.

For those of you who aren't quite sure what ActiveX controls are, they are the little yellow boxes that drop down on your computer screen, asking if you'd like to install something on IE. Here's what one looks like:

The bar that runs across the top is the ActiveX control. Most of the time, ActiveX controls are there to help Internet Explorer do something. They are not harmful to your computer, they just simply make it so that IE can do something extra it does not normally do.

Unfortunately, in this case, some ActiveX controls have been compromised to cause harm to your system. The ActiveX controls at risk are the ones used by Facebook and MySpace users to upload photos.

Here is where the trouble comes in: If you use Facebook or MySpace, you already have these ActiveX controls installed on your system. Until this vulnerability was found, they have been used for something useful (like I mentioned above). But, now that a problem has been found within the controls, computers that have them installed are at risk. If you have the controls installed on your computer and you visit a Web site that has bad intentions, your system can easily be compromised. They can cause as little as a browser crash, but as much as data being stolen from your system.

As of right now, the makers of the ActiveX controls are working on a patch to fix this issue. Until a patch is completed, many security companies are urging users to disable the controls so that they cannot be used by any sites. Unfortunately, this means that MySpace and Facebook users will not be able to upload photos.

Luckily, a program has been made to allow easy management of these controls. They can be turned on and off with the simple check of a box. Here's what you can do.

1.) Download the program to a location you will remember. You can do that right here.

2.) Locate the file you downloaded and open it.

3.) You will see a set of checkboxes, as well as, a status screen on whether the controls are installed on your system or not.

4.) To disable the use of the controls, simply place a checkmark in each of the boxes and click Set.

5.) If you want to re-enable the controls at any time, simply reopen the program and uncheck the boxes. Then click Set again.

That will secure your system until the patch is made available (hopefully within a couple of days). I will continue to keep you posted on this as well. Until next week, stay safe out there, my friends!

World Taximeter

For those of you who either live internationally or travel internationally on a regular basis, I thought this would be a great Web site for you! I know I’d certainly use it if I were abroad and needed to have an idea of how much taxi fares were going to be.

Basically, this site will help you estimate how much your taxi fare will be. They boast about having an 85 percent accuracy rating, which, to me, is awesome! So, how does it work?

Well, you can get started by choosing a city from the drop down list. Right now, the supported cities are: London, Barcelona, Madrid, New York, Prague, San Francisco and Rome. Next, fill out the From: and To: fields for where you're leaving from and where you're going. Also, if you're arranging for transport by phone, be sure to check the box next to that option. Then just click Let’s Go!

It will then generate a map that shows your route, as well as, the Estimated Fare table. On that table, you will find the distance you’ll travel, how long it will take and an estimate of how much it will cost. The neat thing about this table is that at the bottom, you can choose how you want to view the currency. How cool is that?!

I hope you’ll save this site to your favorites for when you travel. I know I already did!
