Quick Tips

Technical Spellings

Today's quick tip isn't quite like what we usually do here at WorldStart, but I found it to be pretty interesting and I thought you all might as well. I've actually been asked about this several times too, so it seems appropriate to share this information with you. So, tell me, have you ever wondered about how you're supposed to spell Internet and e-mail? You know, is Internet supposed to be capitalized and is there a hyphen in e-mail or not?

I have always been curious about those two things as well, so I was pretty excited to find the answer! Here's the scoop. The Internet is actually considered to be a proper noun and in the English language, most proper nouns are capitalized. So, in short, the word Internet should always begin with a capital letter. If you haven't been using a capital I, don't worry. You're not the only one!

As far as the term e-mail goes, it is accepted with and without a hyphen. However, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the correct spelling is actually e-mail, with a hyphen. Why is that, you ask? Well, the word e-mail is composed of two different words (electronic and mail), so the hyphen helps separate them for a more technical spelling. Who knew? Now, go on and spread the word!

21,000 Germs Per Square Inch

On YOUR Desktop!

Now That's Just Nasty!

"A microbiologist at the University of Arizona counted bacteria on workplace surfaces for a study sponsored by The Clorox Co., makers of Clorox bleach. Office toilet seats had 49 germs per square inch, he found. But desktops had almost 21,000 germs per square inch. Desks, phones, computer keyboards and mice are key germ transfer points because people touch them so often..." ~ CNN.com

YUCK! Is That Disgusting or What??

Kill Those Nasty Germs In Seconds!!!

Ultraviolet Technology Makes It Quick, Easy and Chemical Free!

WOW! We had a tremendous response to our UV Light yesterday! Thank You to everyone who ordered! You'll be able to kill off those 21,000 germs in no time! If you missed out, this is one product I think everyone who wants a safe, germ-free environment should have! At work, home, or anywhere - this will help keep the germs down!

Now I wouldn't classify myself as a "germophobe", but when I read studies like the one above, I think I could easily become one! When you stop and think about all the surfaces you touch or come into contact with on a daily basis that dozens (or hundreds) of other people touch, you know there are TONS of icky, nasty germs crawling around out there! Especially this time of year, the cold and flu season (yuck!).

So, when I recently received a sample of this portable Disinfecting UV Scanner, I thought I'd research it a little to see what it's all about before sharing it with you all. After all, I'm like you - I was thinking, "could a light actually kill off germs?" That sounded like a fantasy to me too - well, I was REALLY surprised about this amazing device! Check this out:

"UV-C light is germicidal - i.e., it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens and thus destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease. Specifically, UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of such bonds prevent the DNA from being unzipped for replication, and the organism is unable to reproduce. In fact, when the organism tries to replicate, it dies."
~ Ultraviolet.com (You can read more about it by clicking here.)

So, in a "nutshell", you can easily disinfect and sterilize just about any object you come into contact with by "swiping" the UV Scanner over it for about 10-20 seconds. This includes bacteria and viruses such as: E-Coli, Bacillus Subtilin, Staphylococcus Auras, Hepatitis, Influenza and many other viruses as well! The kill rate is greater than 99.9%. I think that's pretty amazing, don't you?

Here's the great thing, this Disinfecting UV Scanner is extremely portable! It only measures about 5" folded and when it's fully opened it's about 9" in length. It weighs less than a 1/2 lb. and even comes with a handy carrying pouch as well! You can take this with you anywhere and everywhere (discreetly if you choose) and keep bacteria and other harmful viruses away! Great for public bathrooms!

This isn't just for you desktop and keyboard either! It's safe and effective to use on your dishes, toothbrush, cell phone, kids toys, car interior, door handles, etc. You get the idea ;-) Everyone here has been scanning their office from top to bottom since we got this in - it's still working on the same set of batteries too! You get about 4,000 scans with this on just one set - pretty amazing, huh?

When I was checking this item out, I saw that most similar products like this go for no less than $70.00 - OUCH! - some are closer to $100.00 - yikes! Well get this, your cost is just $16.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US! Just think about all the money you spend on those little bottles of hand sanitizer every month - this will pay for itself in no time at all!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4043

PS - Don't spend $70.00 elsewhere ~ do yourself, your coworkers and your family a favor and pick up one for your home and/or office today! You'll thank me later ;-)

Fire Resistant Document Bag!

AMAZING!!!

Protect Your Valuable Documents!

Can Withstand 1000 Degrees!!

And Just Wait Till Ya Hear How We Tested It!

I saw these at one of my suppliers and ordered a sample to use for some personal documents, not really thinking to put it in our newsletter. Well anyway, the sample came in today and when it got to my desk it was already open - hmmm! A few minutes later one of my shippers told me she opened it and already tested it (she got out a lighter and tried to start it on fire) because she was curious if it really worked!

I'm happy to tell you, there are absolutely NO BURN markings of ANY KIND on the bag! I believed her, but I still had to try for it myself ;-) It's amazing - you can stand there all day with a lighter and it just won't catch on fire! (everyone here had to go and try it for themselves - good thing we didn't set off any smoke alarms ;-)! The Document Bag is constructed of fiberglass and it is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 1000°F! WOW!!

Obviously, no one can predict when a fire might break out - one could happen to any of us at any time. This Fire Resistant Document Bag is like a fire safe for all your important documents that you can't afford to lose. Right off the top of my head I am thinking of all the documents I have in my desk at home - insurance papers, passports, birth certificates, property deeds, etc. Not to mention checks, cash, treasured family photos and more! If the worst were to happen and a fire broke out, all of these would be gone!!!

I know what I'm doing tonight - going home and getting my desk cleaned out and securing all my documents in this bag! A fire would be bad enough, but to lose all of my families important documents and valuable items that could have been protected (my stomach hurts just thinking about it), that would be an unnecessary tragedy.

I think these Fire Resistant Document Bags are a MUST-HAVE for everyone who has important or valuable documents they don't want to lose. To give you all the opportunity to get one (or two) and keep your documents safe from fire, we've got t

Q:
Do you know of any shortcuts I can use while I'm filling out forms online? They always seem to take me so long to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A:
Oh, I'm so happy you asked, because I have a fun little trick for this one! So, you frequently sign up for certain things online, right? You know, anything that requires you to choose a username and password or even fill in some of your personal information (name, address, phone number, etc). Well, when you're filling out those forms, do you have to use your mouse to go through most of it? If so, don't you get tired of going back and forth between your keyboard and your mouse? I know I do!

Well, today, I'm here to show you a trick that will change that forever. All you have to do is use the Tab key and the Spacebar on your keyboard. When you're filling out a form that asks for your name, address, etc., you can use the Tab key to go from one line to the next. For example, if you're done filling in your name, hit the Tab key and your mouse cursor will automatically go down to the next line, which is probably where your address goes. You can do that throughout the whole form.

Now, do you ever come across something that requires you to checkmark some of those little boxes? For instance, when a form asks you if you're male or female or when you're changing the settings in your Web browser or e-mail program. Whenever you have to check a box, just hit the Spacebar. If you want to uncheck a box, hit the Spacebar again. It's that easy! With the Tab and Spacebar keys, you can fly through any form you have to fill out or any settings you have to lock in. Sounds good to me! How about you? Give it a try today!

MS Office

Tracing the Path

Do you sometimes use complicated MS Excel formulas? You know, where a formula references cells that, in turn, reference other cells, which can lead to a big chain reaction of values. One wrong or inadvertent change to a cell's value and you could cause a multitude of errors with the reported values.

Ever find yourself wondering just where that value really came from? I mean, which cells in the worksheet actually contribute? It'd be nice to see how it's all connected, especially when you're trying to solve a problem.

Well, to get a visual, all you need to know are the right buttons to click.

In older versions of Excel, you're looking for the View menu, Toolbars submenu, Formula Auditing choice.

If you're using Excel 2007, you need the Formulas ribbon, Formula Auditing section.

To use the auditing tools, you must first select a cell containing a formula that references other cells.

Now, to have Excel draw the path of cells that contribute to the formula, click the Trace Precedents button. In older versions, it's the second button from the left and in Excel 2007, it's the top button on the left side.

Instantly, you'll have a visual with cell outlines and arrows that shows you what other cells in the worksheet contribute to the cell you originally selected.

Click the button a second time to have Excel trace another level of formulas.

In older versions of Excel, use the Remove Precedent Arrows button to reverse the visuals. Each click of that button will remove one level of tracing.

In Excel 2007, you'll need to click the down arrow on the Remove Arrows button and then choose Remove Precedent Arrows.

To have Excel give a display of cells containing formulas that depend upon the value in the cell you've selected, click the Trace Dependents button. (In older versions of Excel, you'll only see the picture, but it looks the same).

The result looks a lot like the precedent arrows, but it tells you where the value feeds go, instead of where they came from.

To remove those traces, click the Remove Dependent Arrows button. (In Excel 2007, you'll find it in the Remove Arrows options list).

I know this has been quite a bit to take in, but I have one more button to show you!

In older versions of Excel, the next button over (the one that looks like an eraser) is the Remove All Arrows button and it will do just that. It removes both the precedent and dependent arrows with just one click.

In Excel 2007, you can achieve a complete erase of all the arrows by clicking on the Remove Arrows button instead of its down arrow.

That's it. A quick and easy way to get a good picture of where everything is coming from and where it's going!

Need An Easy Way To Get Data Off Your Old Hard Drive?

How About A Really Cool Way To Backup Data?

Ohh, Keep reading, you're definitely gonna want to check this out ~

WOW - we just came across the handiest little USB Cable Adapter that you're absolutely going to love! Check out these two great uses:

Easily retrieve information from your old hard drive ~
This is super easy, you simply hook the cable to your old hard drive (or even a laptop) and then plug into a USB port on your current computer and "presto" ~ your old drive now shows up as an external hard drive. How simple and easy is that? You can now access any and all the information you have on that drive and save it to your current computer, a flash drive, whatever ~ super simple, anyone can do this!

Turn an internal drive into a convenient external drive for back-ups ~
Do you know what external hard drives are going for compared to internal drives? Well, a 500GB internal drive is about $150.00 and the 500GB external drive is about $279.99 ~ yikes! The main difference is the nice case on the external drive so when it sits on your desk, it looks pretty. I gotta tell you, for a backup drive I don't need it to look pretty ~ I just want it to hold my data and then sit in the desk drawer quietly until I need it again ;-)

Now, this is where this USB Cable Adapter comes in really handy. Again, just hook the adapter up to your "internal" drive (it doesn't have to be inside your computer) and then plug into an existing USB port on your computer. Again, easy! The drive will show up as an external drive on your computer and you can easily back-up all your files ~ pretty cool, huh? When you're done, you can disconnect and store the drive in a drawer ~ no need to have it taking up desk space! And, you've saved about $130.00 by using an "internal" drive as your backup drive! Works with IDE & SATA drives, so it covers pretty much everything!

If you find yourself in either of these situations, I'm telling you ~ you've got to give this a try. You won't believe how easy this really is ~ even the "non-techies" will be surprised! Oh, yeah ~ almost forgot, TODAY ONLY your cost is just $19.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US!

Tip of the Day

Power Up Your Quick Launch

You know how to use the little toolbar next to the Start button, don’t you? You know, the Quick Launch area that looks like this:

Well, I just made my Quick Launch toolbar a lot more powerful and I'm here today to show you how you can do the same! When you're all finished, your Quick Launch toolbar will look something like this:

How cool is that?! Just follow the steps below and your Quick Launch area will be powered up in no time. Note: This tip is for Windows Vista only. Here we go!

1.) Get to your Quick Launch folder by going to Start and typing "Quick Launch" into the search box. Wait a moment and the first item on the list should be a folder called Quick Launch. This is where you can control what appears on your Quick Launch toolbar.

2.) Fill up the first three spaces with the applications you use most frequently. For example, my first three are Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word and my USB flash drive. You can add an icon by finding the program under your Start menu, right clicking on it and choosing Add to Quick Launch. If you want to add certain drives (for a flash drive, etc.), simply right click inside the Quick Launch folder and go to New, Shortcut. Next, type in the drive's name (E:, F:, etc.), along with a short description for it, such as "My Flash Drive."

3.) You’ll probably want to arrange the first three in order of importance. To do that, simply drag and drop the icons into the slots you want them to fill.

4.) Here comes the exciting part! Go ahead and make a folder within the Quick Launch folder (right click and go to New, Folder). Then give it a name. For my example, I’m going to name my submenu "Office 2007."

5.) Now, it’s time to put some items in the folder! To do that, drag the folder over to the other icons area and then add whatever you want from your All Programs list to the Quick Launch toolbar.

For example, Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Once that’s done, move those icons into the folder by dragging them. So, when you hover over the submenu folder, you will see another menu with all of your programs in it (like all of your Office 2007 programs, etc). Cool, huh?!

See, I told you the Quick Launch toolbar could be more powerful. Power yours up today!

Today's Feature

Screenshot Captor

So many people have asked me about an easy way to make screenshots. You know, taking a picture of what's on your screen so that you can show it to others. Well, in the past, I have always made my screenshots the hard way. I would take the screenshot by pressing the Print Screen button on my keyboard, open up my photo editing program, paste in the image, crop the image and then finally save it and use it. What a mess!

That's all going to change today though, thanks to a really cool program I found called Screenshot Captor. This free program allows you to easily take and work with screenshots. There are so many neat settings and effects you can use, you will be blown away. I can't believe I didn't find this program sooner! Here's an example of a screenshot I took with Screenshot Captor:

See how awesome it is?! This program allows you to choose what part of the screen you want to capture and it gives you the option of adding special effects, such as blur, captions, arrows and so much more. I can't even begin to describe all of the options available! The only way to truly see all of the features in Screenshot Captor is to download it for yourself, which you can do right here.

Go to the Web site, scroll down to the bottom and click on Download Screenshot Captor Now.

Note: This program is free, but it requires a free license. There are simple instructions included with the program, so if you follow those, you will be just fine. If you choose not to get the free license, the program will remind you when you try to launch it. Enjoy!

Fuel Me Up

Do you cringe every time you pass a gas station these days? Having trouble visiting your family and friends because it's too expensive to fill up your tank? That pretty much describes my situation, but no more! By using this Web site, you can find the cheapest gas prices in your area. Plus, if you combine that with any gas discounts in your area, you can find the best deal!

Just type in your city and state or your zip code and click on the Search button. That will give you the gas prices for the top 10 gas stations within 20 miles of your area. You can click on the link below the results to see more gas stations in your area. The listing for each gas station also has two links you can click on. The Address link opens Yahoo! Maps and shows you where the gas stations are located so that you can get directions for them. The Price link will show you all of the prices that have been reported for the different grades of fuel. You’ll find diesel listings when you click into the Price category as well.

Back on the main page, under the Search section, you can also use the link at the bottom to just browse by state and city. Below the Search section, you’ll find a listing for the nation’s averages of highest and lowest gas prices by state.

Those gas prices are reported by everyday people, just like you and me. If you’d like to join them in reporting your local prices, you can do so by registering. To do that, click on the link that says “Click here to log in” and then click on the Register link. Create a username and password, provide a working e-mail address and fill in your first and last name. Once you submit that information, you can log in immediately.

Once you’re logged in, you can start browsing and if you see a gas price that has changed, click on the Update Price link for that station. You can set prices for all the different types of fuel as well. Most of the listings are for regular unleaded gas, but you can report for all of them. Once you’ve put in your prices, just click on the Update button. That's it!

I hope this site helps you save a bundle at the pump!
