Quick Tips

New Release: Firefox 2.0.0.15

As I'm sure most of you already know, another new version of the Firefox 2 Web browser was released early last week. Yep, Firefox 2.0.0.15 made its debut to the public on July 1, 2008 and it is now available for download. The new version is part of Mozilla's stability and security update process that has been ongoing since Firefox 2 was first released back in 2007. Keep reading for all the important details!

If you're still using the Firefox 2 series for your Web browsing needs, it's recommended that you upgrade to v2.0.0.15 as soon as possible. If you haven't done so already, you can download it here (once you get to the Web site, select your language and operating system and then click on the Download link) or you can get it by opening up Firefox and going to Help, Check for Updates.

Now, I know a lot of you are probably questioning this, because as we've been telling you for the past couple of weeks, Firefox 3 is now available as well. While you are encouraged to upgrade to the new version, it's also okay to continue using Firefox 2 if you'd like. According to Mozilla, the Firefox 2 programs will be maintained with security and stability updates until mid-December 2008. I know that's only a few more months away, but if you want to wait a little while longer to make the switch over to Firefox 3, you can do so. It's your choice!

~ Erin

Don't stop now! Make sure you keep reading to learn all about what you can do if Outlook Express insists you have an unsent e-mail, find out how you can go about formatting the numbers in MS Word and take a little tour of the new Firefox 3 Web browser. Also, be sure to stay safe by reading this week's security article thanks to Gary and of course, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day!

Personally, I have always used Adobe to edit my photos. However, after trying out Photo Studio Expressions, I switched. Feeling Under The Weather?

Check Your Temperature!!

The Citizen CT561F Digital Thermometer features a 3 digit LCD with buzzer notice and auto memory recall of last reading. The three digit reading lets you know to the tenth of degree your temperature, which could be very helpful when you are battling a fever. And the auto recall allows you to quickly know if your fever is increasing or decreasing- now that is an awesome idea!

Don't wish you had a good thermometer around next time you're sick - and forget those old mercury thermometers! Yuk- who wants to use those?

Another thing that is really cool about this thermometer is that it is water resistant. When you are sick, the last thing you want to be doing is spreading those awful germs. With this, you can wash it in your sink and NOT worry if you're going to kill it! WOW!!

Oh, and don't sit around for minutes waiting for the thermometer to give you the most accurate reading. This thermometer will beep when it is ready to be removed (and trust me, it doesn't take that long!). That is a pretty awesome feature.

But what is the most awesome thing about this thermometer is the price. For just $8.88 and US Shipping is free, you will never have to worry about your temperature again!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4424

PS: I hate to say it, but flu season will be here before you know it. Order yours now so you have a thermometer around the house before it is too late and you are stuck wishing you would have picked yours up now!!

Computers 101

Q:
I use Outlook Express and even though my Outbox appears to be empty, it keeps trying to send a message. What's going on? Please help!

A:
Isn't that the worst?! I mean, you know you have sent all of your messages out, but Outlook Express still insists that you haven't. How rude! Well, there are a couple of things you can check before you go off and switch e-mail programs. Let's take a look!

The first thing you'll want to check on is your Outbox folder. Go in there and click on the View menu and choose Current View. Once there, make sure the Show All Messages choice is selected. That ensures you're able to see all of the messages that are contained in your Outbox folder. If you then see an e-mail message appear, you can send it off normally or even delete it if you want.

The next thing you can check is within the Outbox folder itself. Go to File, Folder, Compact. If nothing happens, your folder is probably okay and you don't need to worry about it any longer. If you happen to get an error message, the Outbox.dbx file may be damaged. There are a couple of causes for that.

One could actually be an antivirus program that scans outgoing e-mail. Unknown to some, the e-mail scan isn't really necessary to protect your computer, especially if you have a regular antivirus program running as well. Go ahead and disable any e-mail scans to prevent any other e-mail files from being damaged in the future.

If you did have a damaged Outbox file, the next thing you'll want to do is repair it (obviously!) To do that, you need to know where your store folder is for your e-mails. If you're not sure where it is, go to Tools, Options and click on the Maintenance tab. Toward the bottom is the Store Folder button. Click on that and a box will pop up telling you where your store folder is located on your computer. It will give you a drive letter, so write that down if you think you'll forget it. You can also change the location at this point if you want to do that.

Once you have that, close Outlook Express and open up your store folder. Find the file titled "Outbox.dbx" in there and delete it. When you open Outlook Express again, a new Outbox folder will automatically be created, so you can continue to use it just like normal.

Often times, the problem lies within an unsent message, but just in case that isn't so, it's good to know what else you can do!

MS Office

Formatting the Numbers

Do you use MS Word's automatic numbering feature?

If so, have you ever wanted to change the style, starting point or formatting of the numbering?

If having control over the way Word numbers your lists is what you want, read on!

For those of you using older versions of Word, you're looking to go to the Format menu, Bullets and Numbering choice.

When the Bullets and Numbering window opens, you may have to select one of the numbering choices offered in order to activate the Customize button. The numbering style chosen in this step becomes the style that's changed by your customizations, so be sure to choose carefully.

Click the Customize button once it's active.

Here in the Customize Numbered List window, you'll find all of your settings.

The top section (Number format section) allows you to choose the font, number style and where the numbering should begin. (I realize you can control a lot of the choices in this section from within the document by starting the numbering yourself, but the rest of the options can be very helpful, so please stay with me).

In the Number position section, you can choose how the numbers should be aligned (left, centered or right), along with the location of the numbers within the document.

The Text position section allows you to adjust where the text will begin within your numbered lists. Tab space after is how big Word should make the gap between the number and the text. The Indent at field dictates where additional lines will begin within the same numbered item. And, of course, the bottom section provides you with a preview as you make changes, so you know right away what each change does to your list.

Click OK when everything is set to your liking. When you return to the Bullets and Numbering window, you'll notice that your customized numbering system is now among those displayed as a choice ready for use today or in the future.

Click OK again to return to your document.

For those of you using Word 2007, you'll need to start on the Home ribbon.

Click the down arrow on the Numbering button and then choose Define New Number Format at the bottom of the list.

The window that opens offers much the same as previous versions of Word. However, if you're looking to change the starting number for a list, you'll find it's now a separate choice back on the list that opened with the Numbering button. It's the last choice labeled as Set Numbering Value.

That's all there is to it. With just a few quick clicks, you can be the master of your own numbering universe!

Laser Power!!!

Best Deal Ever On A Laser Mouse!

WOW- have we got the most amazing deal for you today! We have just come across these super laser mice. And let me tell you, laser is way better than optical!!! Let's face it, Laser mice cost more. Typically, a laser mouse retails for somewhere between $40.00 to $110.00, and I don't know about you, but I think that is just ridiculous. Keep reading to hear about this deal we have for you today.

So, why are laser mice so much more expensive? Simply - they track better. See, the laser mouse uses infra-red laser diode instead of LED (like an optical mouse) to illuminate the surface beneath their sensor. The laser has around 20 times more surface tracking power than the average optical mouse (Wikipedia.com). This means it won't get fooled as often by bumps, irregularities, etc in the desktop - and that means YOU get smoother tracking!

This three button scroll mouse we have for you today is Soooo cool. Not only is it laser, but it also really comfortable to use. I never thought I would have noticed the difference between mice, but I can honestly say when I began testing this one, I noticed how comfortable it really was!! OH, and just wait till you see how accurately it tracks across your screen!

What else is really cool about this mouse is that it is "plug and play." All you have to do is plug it into a USB port, and this mouse is ready to go!!!

Earlier, I told you we had an amazing deal on this mouse, and I am not lying when I say we do. Get this laser mouse today for just $12.97 and US Shipping is FREE. Now that kind of deal is just too good to pass up. Order Now!

WOW! We've featured lots of card-making software, but seriously, who makes cards better than Hallmark? And with Hallmark Card Studio 2005 you can make amazing Hallmark Cards right from your own home!!

I don't know how Hallmark keeps out doing themselves again and again!!! Each previous edition of the software has been good- but not this good!!!

So what does this software do?

Basically, this it allows you make Hallmark cards right from your computer. Yes, they are authentic cards with even the "Hallmark" trademark on the back. The program comes with pre- designed cards with pictures, graphics, and expressions. All you do is customize it (if you like). If you really want to make your card unique, they even have the ones where you insert your own picture (of course, you do this through your computer so it looks fantastic).

And it is so easy to use!!! By far, I would say this is one of the easiest programs I have ever used! All you have to do is just point and click to create your cards. I was shocked!!! I mean could anything be any easier to use?

Curious about what the finished product will look like once it is printed? Check it out of the 3D view. It was really awesome!

2

This program includes 10,000 different images, 5400 Hallmark cards, projects, and tons more! This gives you over 1 million ways to create your personalized cards.

Personally, I really like that the cards are "pre-written". It makes it so much easier. I never have to rush through the store again looking for the perfect card. It really has saved me time!!!

Of course, you can replace what they say with what you want to say (or add to it, modify, etc). Plus, people really dig you more custom message and what to know where you found such a personalized card.

Oh, and it's not just limited to the printing out out-dated paper cards (that's so 20th century) - you can also send e-mail greetings complete with animated pictures and sounds!

As if all the above weren't enough, this can also do scrapbooks, calendars, and even has a really good built-in photo editor! WOW!! And just wait till you check out the event planner! Never forget to send another card - this will remind you! How cool is that??

All this probably sounds really expensive!!! Relax!!! Your price is just $6.97 (retail $49.95). Of course, if you live in the US shipping is FREE! Here's a link with all the info:

Tip of the Day

Tour of Firefox 3

As most of you already know, the new Firefox 3 Web browser was released on June 17, 2008 and it has been going strong ever since. I know there are still a few of you out there who haven't installed it yet though and there may even be some of you who are using it, but don't know a whole lot about it. If you fall into either of those categories, this is the tip for you! Today, we're going to go on a little tour of Firefox 3 so that you can see what all it has to offer. We're going to check out all of the new features and just take a look at everything you can expect. So, if you're ready, let's go on a little Firefox 3 journey!

A Smarter Address Bar

First of all, you know what Internet Explorer’s drop down address bar is like, right? You know, it looks a little something like this jumbled mess:

Well, the Mozilla company has gone one step further with their new Firefox 3 Smart Address Bar. Not only does it display the address, but it also shows the favicon and title of the Web site you're looking for, like this:

Zooming Right Along

Now, do you ever wonder how certain Web sites expect you to read text like this:

I mean, I wear reading glasses and I still can't read that small of print! Thankfully, the folks over at Mozilla have also installed a zoom function into Firefox 3 so that you can read the print on any Web site much easier. To do so, simply press Ctrl + + to zoom in (yes, that’s Ctrl and the plus sign at the same time). Or, if you want to zoom out, just hit Ctrl + - (that's Ctrl and the minus sign together). As a result, you'll see this instead:

Shop Safer

I’ve been waiting for Firefox to implement something like this. I know Internet Explorer has been working on a feature similar to this for Internet Explorer 8, but Firefox has it now!

As you can see, there’s now an easier way to access security certificates. If you click on More Information in Firefox 3, you'll discover all sorts of useful information, including how many visits you make to particular Web sites and so on. (It also shows you how much of an addict you are to certain Web sites!)

Now, I noticed all of those features as soon as I upgraded to Firefox 3, but another huge difference I think you'll enjoy is the new design of the browser. It now looks a little something like this:

I know that was a pretty quick tour, but as you can see, Firefox 3 has a lot to offer. So, if you haven't installed Firefox 3 yet, you can do so right here. All in all, whether you're starting out as a new user or you've been using it for awhile now, I hope you enjoy your new Firefox Web browser!

Today's Feature

Secunia PSI

Today, I have a free download and an amazing security tool all in one! The program is called Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) and it does something I've been seeking for a long time.

Do you ever wonder if all of the programs on your system are up to date? I know I have! Everyone has so many programs on their computer and if they're not kept up to date, they can pose security threats to your system. Well, Secunia PSI will take care of all your programs for you! Just install the free Secunia PSI program and it will automatically scan all of your programs and tell you whether or not they're outdated. It will also tell you if any of your programs have reached the end of their life, meaning the manufacturer has stopped making updates for them.

That's all good and well, but Secunia PSI can do even more than that! If the program finds products that are out of date, it will give you a one click download to fix the issue. Just click on the button and your system will immediately start downloading the fix for the problem. After the download is complete, simply run the update and the issue will be fixed.

When I scanned my computer here in the office, Secunia PSI found five programs that were out of date. I was able to update all of them very quickly. It was much faster than hunting for the fixes on the Internet.

If you're interested in getting Secunia PSI for yourself, you can download it right here. Just click on the link that looks like this:

Enjoy and until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Convert World

This is an excellent conversion tool. I know I’ve brought you other tools like this before, but I really like having options and this Web site gives me everything I need!

The thing I like most about this site is it isn’t just a currency converter. You can also convert measurements and time!

At the top of the page, you can select your language. That will convert the page from English to the language of your choice. In the middle of the page, you'll find the featured conversion tools for: Currency, Time Zones, Mass, Volume, Length and Paper Size.

On the side menu, you’ll find several more types of conversions, like Acceleration, Equivalent Dose, Fuel Consumption and Temperature.

The conversion tools are very easy to use. Just put in the information they're asking for and click on the Show Result button to get the conversion. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

I hope you’ll find this Web site to be as useful as I did. I bookmarked it so that I can return any time I need to convert something. Enjoy!
