Computer Tips [ Beware of Chain Letter E-mails + Sleepy Mice Save Power + Special Keyboard Functions ] 03/20/08

Quick Tips

Mouse Battery Power

Here's a quickie for you! In the past, I have talked about waking up sleeping mice. I told you that if you leave your wireless mouse alone for more than eight minutes, it will be sleeping when you come back. The reason they go into the sleep mode is to save some battery life, which, of course, is very helpful. Well, there are a couple other things you can do to save the battery life of your wireless mouse as well. Let's check them out!

There is one practice that may not be too practical for everyone, but if you're able, you can always try it. I'm talking about using your mouse as little as possible. If you know several keyboard shortcuts, you should use them! (Or, at least use as many as you can). The less you click your mouse, the more battery life you will save. Of course, this isn't completely necessary, because a mouse is obviously intended to be used, but if you're able to give your mouse a break every once in awhile, it won't hurt a thing.

I know keyboard shortcuts are hard to learn and it's even harder to remember all of them, so another thing you can do is keep your mouse on a white piece of paper or a highly reflective surface while it's resting. That will help conserve some of the battery power too. Now, go on and give your mouse a break when you can. I promise, it will thank you in the end!

You can't stop now! There's so much more to read about. Keep going to learn all about why you should always stay away from chain letter type e-mails, find out how you can easily get all your favorite commands and buttons back in various MS Office 2007 programs and learn all about the special function keys you may have on your keyboard. Hey USB Users!

Here's A Cool New Device You Gotta Grab!

Connect TWO Computers To ONE Device!

Too Cool!

Oh, I've gotta tell ya - I'm really lovin' this one! It's a Phillips USB 2.0 Sharing Switch and it's a MUST-HAVE if you own more than one computer!

What's it do? Glad you asked!

This little device allows you to take one USB device and hook it up to TWO different computers! For example, say you have a printer you want to use with two different computers. Normally, you'd have to plug & unplug every time you wanted to change which computer was using the printer, right? What a pain. Well, with this it's no problem!

Sticking with our printer example (again, works with ANY USB device you want to share) simply hook this little gadget up to the printer, and now your printer can hook up to TWO computers instead of just one! Nothin' to it!

PLUS this is 100%, completely automatic! No drivers, no setup. Just plug your stuff in and start using it!

If you have a scanner, printer, card reader, external hard drive, flash drive, or any other USB device you want to use with two computers, this is really the way to go! Just plug it in and you're set!

Your cost? Get this - Just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's a killer deal on one of the most useful gadgets we've ever come across! Check it out, you'll want one too!

Mind-Blowing Deal!

Enormous 8 GIG Flash Drives!!

BLOWOUT - Just $44.97!

Yup, You Read That Right!
Just $44.97!

Don't Pay $70-$120 Elsewhere!

Grab This TODAY!

WOW! These went like CRAZY yesterday! You guys and gals know when you see a deal! Thank You to the hundreds and hundreds who grabbed this one!

I'm with ya - just can't believe this deal we were able to get! In fact, I've had one for a few months now, and I actually paid MORE for it than you're getting them for today!

If you missed out on the 8 GIG Toshiba Flash drives yesterday, now's you chance to get the best deal we've ever had on an 8 Gig flash drive! Actually, I'd bet this may be the lowest price on an 8 Gig flash drive pretty much ANYWHERE! I mean, just head to your local big box store - $70-$120 easy. Not here! Just $44.97! Is that fantastic or what?

First off, these are really high quality drives. I mean, they're Toshiba, so you know they're really going to last a LONG time!

As for usefulness - can anything be better? I use the heck out of these things! In fact, my main flash drive is the one we're selling today! I love the HUGE 8 gig capacity! I have used it for everything too. I've transferred documents and programs over to the office, moving large files form computer to computer, and it's my "portable office" when I'm away from home!

Oh, and it's not just for files - you can also run programs right form the drive! Really! I like a lot of the stuff from PortableApps.com. Lots of free software you can install and actually run right from a flash drive like this!  You can get web browsers, e-mail, office software, graphics software, and TONS more! Just install it on your flash drive and all you really need is a Windows computer available! Just like that your entire office is right at your fingertipsWho needs a laptop anyway? Just plug this in and your office is read to go! WOW!!

The above is great, but my favorite use for these have got to be digital photos! As many of you know, I love taking pictures, and I love to have them with me! I always have people asking me if they can see my photos - well, I just whip out this fantastic flash drive, pop it into a nearby computer, and show them all my latest stuff! Now, you gotta admit, that is really cool!

Plus setup is soooo easy! For XP or Vista computers, you just plug it and you're good to go. The drive will show up under My Computer. Just drag the files over you want to put on the drive! That's it! Keeping it with you is as easy as the setup - it has a built-in loop to attach to your keychain!

Again, we just got a price break on these, so now's the time to buy! Just $44.97 and US shipping is FREE! $120-$180 retail!! It's crazy not to grab a few a this kind of price! Here's the link:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=3960

PS - This is the lowest we've ever offered these - heck, I've NEVER seen 8 Gig drives this low before anywhere! RUN to the site before this deal dries up and you end up missing out, sitting at home alone, in the dark, looking at your computer wishing you had an 8 Gig flash drive! :-)

Suck The Dust Off Your Mini Blinds!

Incredible New Mini Blind Vac Attachment!

You Gotta Try This!

Yeah, yeah, I know - this isn't our normal fare, but you know how I am. If a supplier sends me something that turns out to be really cool I've just gotta tell you about it!

Anyhow, these are really great! It's a Mini Blind Vacuum Attachment and it's a must-have for anyone with mini blinds - well, anyone who like them to be clean anyhow :-)

So, we have this sitting around and my wife notices that the mini blinds in the bathroom are, well, getting beyond dirty and edging over towards nasty. She tells me it's time to "test" this Mini Blind Vac Attachment sample. OK, I'm always game!

It's got several adapters so it fits just about every vacuum ever made. After getting it attached, I gave it a shot. WOW! What a great job - and incredibility easy to use! It makes it soooo mush easier to clean the stupid mini blinds! Mine look like new again! In a matter of minutes I went from dusty and nasty to good as new! How's that for a super-vac attachment?

This was so simple to do - just open the blinds and set the attachment "into" them (see pict). Move back and forth and it eagerly sucks up all the dust! No mess to clean up, no sloppy wet wipe down - it just plain works!

Want one? I hear ya! We have a limited quantity available at just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! For that kind of money, you just can't go wrong! Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4215

PS - Don't miss this one! You just know if you pass on this the next time you have to clean those darn mini blinds you're gonna wish had one! Hurry though - like I said, VERY limited number available!!

Q:
Almost every day, I receive some type of chain letter in my e-mail Inbox. They all usually contain different information and while some of them are ridiculous, there are a few that seem really important. Is there any good that can come from me forwarding those e-mails to my friends? Are the chain letters really true? If you could clear this up for me, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

A:
Ah, yes, I know exactly what you're talking about! I'm sure all of you have gotten an e-mail like that before, am I right? There are literally tons of chain letter type e-mails floating around the Web these days and it's been going on for years. And while those kinds of e-mails can be rather convincing, they are all just a big hoax. I repeat, it's a hoax. If you don't believe me, please keep reading and I'll tell you why!

Before I go any further though, I want to make sure everyone knows exactly what we're talking about. If you're not quite sure what I mean when I say a chain letter type e-mail, listen here for an example. One that quickly came to my mind is about a young child who is terminally ill and needs an operation. The e-mail starts off by telling you about the child and their family. It gives you a poem to read that was supposedly written for the child and it then asks you to forward the e-mail to everyone you know. It goes on to tell you that for every forward, a certain amount of money will be given to the family to help with the cost of the operation. The e-mail usually says that some big company, like AOL, will be donating the money. All I can say is, it's not true!

The simple truth to all of this is a forwarded e-mail cannot be tracked. So, even if you forward an e-mail like the one I described above to every single person you know, there's no way a company like AOL could track that to determine how much money they should donate. It's as simple as that! In fact, there's no way anything like that could ever be possible even if we wanted it to. E-mail services just don't work like that. Plus, once an e-mail is forwarded over and over again, it's often too mangled to even detect anything, which makes any type of tracking system impossible.

So, if you ever receive an e-mail that says "Forward this to as many people as you can," don't! I promise, it's just not worth it. Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "Well, maybe I'll forward it just in case it is true." No! That won't help anything either. If you do that, you will only continue the cycle of sending out false information. Once you forward the e-mail, you're basically sending a hoax to all of your friends and family members. There's no good in that, now is there? It's best just to delete the e-mail and move on.

Now, if you're positive an e-mail you receive is true, there are many resources you can use to check it out before you send it on. One of the most popular is Snopes.com. Snopes does a great job of keeping everything up to date and it covers a wide range of topics. You can just go to the Web site, type in a few keywords about the e-mail you received and you should be able to find some information on it. For example, I went to Snopes, typed in "e-mail hoax" in the search box and it gave me several to look through. I'm sure yours is there somewhere!

To finish up, when you come across an e-mail you're not sure of, it's best to either just delete it right away or at least check it out on a Web site like Snopes. Chances are, it is an e-mail hoax, but if you want to be certain, you have some options. Either way, please keep yourself safe. Nasty e-mails come through our Inboxes everyday and if you're not careful, you may end up being a victim of one of them. Be careful, my friends!

MS Office

I Can't Find It Anywhere!

Have a command or button from your old version of MS Office that you just can't seem to locate on the ribbons in Office 2007?

Getting frustrated with its absence?

Well, I have a suggestion of one more place to look and maybe, just maybe, you can get it back!

We're going to see if the little Quick Access Toolbar they so nicely included could be the answer we need.

The first step is to click the down arrow to the right of the toolbar.

From the list, go to the bottom and choose More Commands.

When the program's Options dialogue window opens, you're looking for the "Choose commands from" field.

From the drop down list, choose Commands Not in the Ribbon.

Below that, an entire list of commands will be displayed. Take a look through them and if you're lucky, what you've been looking for will be there!

If it is, select the command and click on the Add button in the middle of the window.

Click OK to return to the program where you can see your new and improved Quick Access Toolbar. Yes!

Tip of the Day

Special Keyboard Keys

Have you ever owned a keyboard that has special function keys? You know, the small buttons that run along the very top of the keyboard. Different keyboards have different keys, but the most common ones are an e-mail button, a search button, a connect button (for the Internet) and a calculator button. Some even have a sleep mode function, a volume control right on the keyboard itself and multimedia keys.

As you can imagine, those extra keys are very nice to have around. For example, if you want to get into your e-mail or use the calculator, you can just hit that button one time and the program will pop right up on your screen. It's like your wish lies right at your fingertips!

If you've already been using the special keys, that's great and you should keep doing so. If you have the buttons, but don't know how to use them, you should refer to the software that came with your keyboard. Look through the manual and there should be instructions on how to configure the buttons so that you can start using them.

Now, every keyboard is different, so it's hard to tell you how to make the special function keys work without skipping over someone, but all the answers should be right there in your manual. Once you get them working, I'm positive you'll never want to stop!

Today's Feature

Tiny Spell

I'm telling you, it feels really good to hunt down downloads for our readers and bag a winner! This may be one of the most useful downloads I have ever found. I loved this little gem from the moment I misspelled my first file (which was about five seconds after the install!)

It's called Tiny Spell, but what it does isn't tiny at all. Tiny Spell can correct your spelling in any application within Windows. That's huge! So, if you're working in a program that doesn't support MS Word, you can still have confidence knowing you're spelling everything right. No more dumping a word into a Word document just to see if it is spelled correctly. With Tiny Spell's simple to use interface, you'll cruise through misspelled words easily and quickly.

Tiny Spell sits in your system tray and turns from white to yellow when it recognizes an incorrectly spelled word.

A quick click on the icon and a list of possible spelling choices pops up. Highlight the correct entry and you're on your way. I find it easier to use this "on the fly" in Word than the actual built in spellchecker. You can also add words to Tiny Spell's database that it may not be familiar with and it will then recognize them in the future.

This really is a great program and I'm sure that if you're like me, you'll get your money's worth out of it! But, of course, it's free, so you don't have to worry about that either. Now, go on and enjoy the safety net that Tiny Spell can provide for you!

You can download Tiny Spell for yourself right here. Enjoy!
