![]() | FF 3 vs. IE 8 Ever since I told you about the release of the first Internet Explorer 8 beta, several of you Firefox users out there have been e-mailing me in a frenzy. It seems as if a lot of you are worried that the new version of IE is going to "take over" Firefox. And while I understand your concerns, I still say there's no way that could happen. First of all, both Web browsers have their own lot of fans and for that reason alone, neither one of them is going anywhere. All in all, whether you're a Firefox user or an Internet Explorer user, you have nothing to worry about! In fact, in some ways, both browsers come out on top. As you probably know, both of them have brand new versions coming out in the very near future. Final release dates have not yet been announced, but betas for both Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3 have already debuted. Each one is obviously coming with its own set of new features as well, but that doesn't mean one is better than the other. In my opinion, both new versions are very unique, so no matter which browser you prefer to use, you're still going to reap the benefits! Let's go over a few examples. For starters, IE 8 is coming with a couple new features called Web Slices and Activities. With Web Slices, you will be able to subscribe to any part of a Web site at any time, which will be very handy and useful. Even more, the Activities function will give you more menus to work with so that you can do more with the Web pages you visit. On the other hand, Firefox 3 will still have all of the ever popular add ons and plug-ins, as well as, a new download manager and a brand new bookmarking system. As you can see, each of the new browsers are bringing more to the table and there will be something for everyone. So, stop worrying and start focusing on getting yourself ready for your new browser of choice! ~ Erin Don't stop now! Make sure you keep reading to learn how you can get rid of some of your unwanted system tray icons, find out how to easily alphabetize in MS Word and learn all about the differences between Flash and Shockwave. Also, be sure to stay safe by reading this week's security article thanks to Gary and as always, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day! OK, I tend to run a pretty tight ship when it comes to my computer. I don't mess around. It's lean and mean - I don't have any excess files taking up space, no left over registry entries, no software hiding out on my HD, very few temp files, in short - no excess. Or so I thought! I ran Spring Cleaning and in about two minutes it recovered 4 GIG of space! I couldn't believe it! Just one click and I make a HUGE space gain on my hard drive! And that's only one of about 20 such buttons! So, next I was off to the registry section. I click Fix Registry expecting only to find a few minor problems. Wrong again! This time, it finds 608 entries that were no longer valid! The programs for them were long gone, but the entries remained! Clean up was just a click away. Now I'm thinking, "This is great, but what else is there?" So, I decide to check for duplicate files. Now, this time I'm sure the results are going to be light. Good thing I'm not a betting man! This software found a whopping 8,425 duplicate items (I was shocked)! Now, many of these files just share a name, so I left them alone. However, I still found a lot of stuff that I could easily clean out - and this program made it simple! In addition, this features a program uninstaller that's absolutely fantastic. It really puts the Windows add/remove programs utility to shame. Most uninstallers just get rid of the main program files. Lots of stuff gets left behind - especially registry entries. Well, this scans the program files and finds EVERYTHING! It even shows you what it's found - registry entries and all! A quick click and it's gone. This alone is enough reason to grab this title! And that's just the tip of the iceberg! This can also move programs to a new location on your computer, or transport them to another PC! It can compress programs that you don't use often to save space, backup programs, give you graphs for storage usage, and tons more! To say I'm impressed with this software would be the understatement of the year! This thing is AWESOME! My windows install really isn't all that old (3 months), but this software managed to find literally thousands of ways to make it better. Oh, almost forgot - it's designed to make it easy for everyone to work with too! It has automatic settings for just about every function, but also gives power users advanced options. Take a look at all this can do: This software is just fantastic. It can really help you to recover wasted space and get things running better. Grab yours today! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4097 Q: A: First of all, I want to make sure everyone knows what kind of icons we're talking about. Your network icons can be anything from your network card to your wireless connection to your local area connection and so on. If you don't use some of those things anymore, it only makes sense to get rid of them, right? So, let's get started! Once you decide which icons you'd like to remove, just right click on one and choose Status. That will bring up the Status window for that particular network icon. Next, click on the Properties button. From there, look toward the bottom of the window and uncheck the boxes that say "Show icon in notification area when connected" and "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity." Those two settings mainly deal with your network connections, but once you have them all set up, your icons will disappear! Now, there is another alternative, but it's a little more involved, so do it at your own risk. It really helps in certain cases though. For example, if you use this method for your wireless card, it can actually lengthen the life of your battery. To get started, right click on the icon you want to remove and choose Status. From there, click on the Disable button. By doing that, you're actually disabling your network connection, which will also turn off the hardware that goes with it. In the case of your wireless card, it will shut that down, which will dramatically lower your power usage. If you ever need to enable a network connection again, you can do so by going to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. There you will see a list of all your connections, whether they're disabled or not. To reconnect one, just right click it and hit Enable. Also, if you ever want to bring one of your icons back, just simply do the very first set of instructions in reverse. If you just simply checkmark the two options listed above, your icons will come back to life! That's it. It sure is nice to clean up your computer from time to time, isn't it?! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: Alphabetize It! The Difference Between Flash and Shockwave You've probably heard of both Flash and Shockwave, but do you know the difference between them? Well, that's what I'm here to take care of today. Let's get started! Flash and Shockwave allow Web sites to deliver the most engaging, compelling and interesting entertainment content on the Web. The Web utilizes technologies like Flash and Shockwave to enhance the entertainment experience you get when you use the Internet. There are certain Web sites that require either Shockwave or Flash to be installed in order to view their content. For example, many sites require Shockwave to be able to play free slot games, etc. As you may be too, I have always been confused about the difference between Flash and Shockwave. I mean, they both: 1.) Are technologies developed by Macromedia, Inc. 2.) Are plug-ins for Web browsers. 3.) Make use of ActiveX in Web browsers. 4.) Enable Web pages to include multimedia objects, such as graphics, video and animations. However, when I thoroughly researched both of them, I found quite a few differences. Most of them are minor, but I never knew about them, so I figured we could sort them out together. Let's go! Macromedia Flash 1.) Macromedia Flash is widely spread, as many Web sites require Flash to be pre-installed. It allows designers to combine text, graphics, video and sound to create dynamic and immersive applications in a variety of fields, including interactive Web content and games. 2.) Flash loads comparatively faster than Shockwave. 3.) Flash allows designers and developers to integrate video, text, audio and graphics into their interactive presentations. 4.) Flash is also much cheaper than Shockwave, as it costs approximately $400. 5.) Flash works in the .SWF Flash format and it is part of the "SIMPLE" Scripting Level. Macromedia Shockwave 1.) Macromedia claims that over 200 million Web users have installed the Macromedia Shockwave player. Some of the features supported by Shockwave are 3D games, product demos and online learning applications. 2.) Shockwave is mostly used for online games and areas that require programming (as opposed to simple video clips or animations). It has the ability to move objects around as well. 3.) Shockwave has a special built in feature where it can integrate Flash into its own format (Flash cannot do that with Shockwave). 4.) Shockwave can only be created using the Macromedia Director and it is part of the Advanced Scripting Language. Shockwave requires technical expertise as well. 5.) Shockwave is much more expensive than Flash, as it costs more than $1,000. 6.) Shockwave works in the .DCR Shockwave format, which is one that is much harder to decode/modify. There you have it! Now you know all there is to know about Flash and Shockwave. Don't you feel special?! ~ Chetan P. If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing. New Browser Security Over the last few weeks, Erin has written about both Microsoft and Mozilla releasing the newest versions of their Web browsers for testing. Internet Explorer 8 Beta and Firefox 3 Beta are now in their testing phases and they both offer a bundle of new features that will help keep you more secure. I thought I would run through a few of those features today, just to let everyone know what's coming. Here we go! First, you need to keep in mind that both of these browsers are still in the testing stage. If you'd like to download either of them, you're welcome to, but you should use them at your own risk. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox will include a new feature to fight against phishing attacks. Many people fall for phishing scams because the address in the address bar is usually deceiving enough to make you believe it's from a legitimate site. Because of that, both IE and Firefox will have a feature called domain highlighting. It will put the actual domain of the site you're visiting in bold lettering. By doing that, you will be able to see what site you're truly visiting. Here's an example: As you can see, if the address was not highlighted, you could easily think the address was from a Citibank site. Instead, the domain highlighting feature shows you that's not true. The page is actually from a site called stealmyinfo.com. By seeing that, it's easy to catch the sites that shouldn't be trusted. Other than the domain highlighting feature, both Firefox and Internet Explorer will have a malware fighting tool. While both programs have different ways of identifying bad Web sites, the results are usually very similar. Both browsers will check the site you're about to visit against a database of known phishing and malware sites. If you're about to go to a known dangerous site, you will receive a warning. You will then have the ability to choose if you still want to go to the site or not. Those are just a couple features that are being built in to the new browsers. Both Microsoft and Mozilla have said other security features will be included as well. Microsoft has not yet disclosed all of their plans, but Mozilla has a full list of future features listed here. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends! ~ Gary For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter. I am delighted to bring you this Web site! I’ve been using Desktopography to adorn my desktop for a couple of months now and I’ve yet to be disappointed by the beautiful images they provide for free desktop wallpaper. To get started, click on the text that describes the site. Note: Since this is a graphic site, it may take a few minutes to load, but it is well worth the wait! Also, if you’re at work, you may want to turn the music all the way off, because it's a little loud. The music is very ambient though and it's filled with nature sounds that really enhance your experience while you're browsing through the wallpaper designs. Once the page loads, you’ll be looking at a slideshow of images. You can scroll through the images using the arrow keys. Simply click on the images to view them larger as well. When you find the one you like and want to use, click on the Download button to the left of the image. That will give you a file download window. Choose Save and then select to save it on your Desktop. I like to do it that way, because then I don’t accidentally lose the file. Next, you’ll need to unzip the file with a file extractor, such as WinZip. I put that file on my desktop as well. Once you’ve done that, you just need to right click on the photo and choose Set as Desktop Background. The ninth picture for 2007 is currently gracing my desktop. It's called Enchanted Forest and I love it! There are three years of exhibitions here: 2005 – You’ll find 10 pieces of natural themed desktops. 2006 – You’ll find 25 pieces in this collection. 2007 – Here you will find a whopping 40 pieces to choose from! Did you really fall in love with a piece from the exhibition? Would you like to see more from its artist? Well, you can! Next to the image on the left, you’ll find the name of the artist and a link to their Web site. Or, you can go to the bottom of the page and click Full Credits to see the links to all of the artist’s pages. I hope you enjoy decorating your desktop with this lovely wallpaper as much as I did! http://www.desktopography.net/ ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
