![]() | Save It! How often do you order something online or sign up for something on a Web site? I'm guessing you do either of those quite often, because it's just the way of the world these days. Almost every Web site you visit either has something you need to register for or they're trying to get you to buy their products. It's certainly not bad if you do that kind of thing, but there are some rules you should make for yourself when you do. Let's check it out! I'm mainly talking about saving the information you accumulate from those transactions. It's best to save all of that for your future records. For example, if you purchase something from WorldStart's Web site, we always send you a confirmation e-mail, no matter what. When you get those, you should always save them, just in case you need it for something else. Those e-mails will always contain an order ID number and it's very helpful for us if you have that. The same goes for any other Web site you buy from. Always keep your receipts on hand, because you never know when you'll need to refer back to them. This also holds true for any items you may sign up for. For instance, if you register with WorldStart's Web site, you have to create a username and password. Make sure you save that information so that you never have to worry about forgetting it when you need it. This applies to any Web site that has some sort of registration. The best thing to do is create a folder just for your receipts, confirmations, etc. You can either keep it on your desktop or in your e-mail program. Either way, you should save all of that information each time it comes about. It only makes sense, right? So, if you haven't already, start saving now! ~ Erin Don't stop now! Keep reading to learn all about one more way Google is keeping you protected while you search, find out how you can easily do case sensitive sorts in MS Excel and learn about a few guidelines you should follow to see if you really need a new computer or not. Also, find out how to create your very own folder and shortcut icons with today's video tip and of course, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day. Enjoy!
Hey everyone - I'm really excited about the software featured below! I actually had MS Office 2007 on my computer and this has replaced it. I think it's really that great! Between the price, features, and ease of use, I think you'll agree. Somehow, it just seems more "user friendly" to me. Check it out! ~Steve Fantastic New Office Suite Software Will Blow You Away! Thinking About Overpriced MS Office? Forget It! Get The Power Of MS Office - Just $12.97! Really! That's Not A typo!! You Just Gotta See This! Absolutely Incredible!! Oh WOW! I gotta tell ya - I'm REALLY (REALLY) EXCITED about this one! We just got Office Suite 2007 in stock (powered by OpenOffice) and let me tell ya - this thing is just incredible! It not only has EVERY feature you'd want in an office suite, it's almost a give-away price too! First off, this version is absolutely fantastic - I can't believe how impressed I continue to be with this software! I like it WAAYYY better than MS Office 2007! The power and ease of use is just phenomenal! I was putting it on my machine temporarily just to test it (I have MS Office 2007), but now that I've seen it and used it - well, MS Office is the one getting evicted!! Turns out it really blows MS Office right out of the water! I was telling Gary, our tech guy, about how much I love this thing and turns out that he uses this to write up all the security articles and downloads for the tips newsletter! He's with me - after using it he wouldn't go back to MS Office - EVER! What do you get? Well, EVERYTHING! This includes an absolutely fantastic word processor, a spreadsheet program on steroids (it just stomps Excel), presentation software that's second to none, an incredible drawing program, an advanced calculating program, and even a souped-up, high-end database! It can even create PDFs with the push of a button from most applications! WOW! To get even close to that with MS office you'd be looking at a small fortune! I was using the the other day with a friend and for the first half-hour he thought we were using MS Office. Finally he looked at it a little closer and said, "Hey - what program is this?" I told him about it - and how inexpensive it was - and he was blown away! He couldn't believe that you could get a program like this for less than $15!! In fact, at first he thought I was kidding around. Well, he's got a few on the way for himself now! Why shell out $400 - $800 for MS Office when you can get this for a small fraction of the cost? I know we're going to be using it here at the office when we have a new computer arrive. We used to shell out $400+ just so we could use Word and Excel! This is actually BETTER and the low cost is just unreal! The 2 of the main components are a top notch Word Processor and a Spreadsheet Program. Both look a LOT like MS Word and MS Excel - in fact, if you just open it up and ignore the title bar, you'd swear that you were using an improved version of MS Office! It's THAT good. Oh, and like I said, this also comes with a phenomenal presentation program, drawing program, database and MORE! Let's look at the main two everyone use though - I just want to give you an idea why this program is sooo great! The Word Processor is just fantastic! I mean, it really has everything - a spell checker, grammar checker, thesaurus, auto text, tables, password protection, mail merge, easy font selection, auto numbering, etc. Plus, everything is very intuitive - it just seems like things are where you expect them to be and work the way you'd expect them to work. It's like the person who wrote the software actually uses the software! It also has a fantastic built-in HTML editor for web pages that works seamless with the word processor, a really easy to use tool to insert shapes, and more! Here's what I love ~ you can turn your document into a PDF file with the click of one button ~ this is a terrific feature!! Oh, and wait till you see the Spreadsheet Program! It looks and functions just like MS Excel! Even the menus are virtually identical - everything you're used to doing in Excel can be done just as quickly here. TONS of built-in formulas, formatting, and functions at your fingertips. Create charts in just a few mouse clicks, filter data easily, send spreadsheets via e-mail, you name it, this can do it! You'll never need Excel again (or wan to use it for that matter)!! The really cool thing is that all of this is 100% MS Office Compatible. It not only opens MS Office files (.doc, .xls) but can also save in that format! That way, you don't need to have MS Office to create or save MS Office documents. Cool huh? I tell ya what - I could go on and on about this one - it's really one of the most - if not the most - powerful office suites I've ever had the privilege of using! I'm really excited about having it on my computer and I can't recommend this highly enough! If you need office software, you just gotta give this a try! Oh, your cost? Glad you asked! Just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's almost a give-away for that kind of money - especially when you think that MS Office is $400-$800!! Try it, you'll thank me later :-) http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4134 PS - Make sure you give this a try! For $12.97, you just can't go wrong! It'll surprise ya - Heck, it still surprises me on a daily basis! I love it! WOW! - Check Out These Great Offers Too! Q: A: First of all, I just want to talk a little about phishing attacks. We all know that phishing is a popular form of malware these days and unfortunately, it seems to just grow and grow. One of the main phishing attacks is spam e-mail and it's said that approximately 100 billion spam messages are sent out on a daily basis. That accounts for 85 percent of all the incoming e-mails we all receive in a day. That's just ridiculous! Those figures really put into perspective how much phishing has gotten out of hand. Luckily, various Web browsers and certain Web sites have added security features that help fight against phishing attacks. For example, both Firefox and Opera have an alert system that warns you when you're on a malicious site. And with getting back to today's question, Google is now getting in on the action too! Google recently added a new phishing warning to their Web site that shows up every time you attempt to visit a site that is used in conjunction with phishing. The warning pops up under your search results whenever you click on a "bad" link. The message tells you that Web forgery is suspected and it suggests that you go back to your search results and try a different site. The warning looks something like this: To my knowledge, this new feature was put into place on April 21, 2008, so don't be discouraged if you haven't seen it yet. It's only been active for a few days. If you do a lot of searching with Google though, I'm sure you'll see it soon. Now, in the past, Google has done the same thing for other types of malware, but I just want to make it clear that this one only focuses on phishing. So, really, with both of them put together, you're 100 percent protected. And I don't know about you, but I like the sound of that! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: Case Sensitive Sorts Do you sort a lot of data in MS Excel? If so, have you ever found any case sensitive data (part numbers, account numbers, etc.) that just doesn't seem to sort properly? Does Excel ignore upper and lower case and sort purely on letter content? Is that a problem for you? If it is, it seems to me you do a lot of manual manipulation of your data to get it all "in the right place." Want a way out of the manual manipulation? No problem! Unbeknownst to many, Excel can do sorts that are case sensitive. I know by now you're probably very intrigued, so let's take a look at how you can get Excel to cooperate. Begin your sort as normal. That is, highlight the list to sort or select a cell in the data range to get Excel to select the whole thing for you. If you're using Excel 2007, you need the Home Ribbon, Sort and Filter button, Custom Sort choice. In older versions of Excel, you need to go to the Data menu, Sort choice. For all versions, when the Sort window opens, locate and click on the Options button. Excel 2007 will look like this: Other versions of Excel will look something like this: At this point, you're in the Sort Options dialogue window. Select the Case sensitive checkbox and click OK. Upon returning to the Sort window, finish setting your choices, complete the sort and then you're back to business as usual! This time, the sorted data should be sorted in a whole new light! For example, lower case items will be sorted before the upper case. And you no longer have to rearrange anything by hand. Yes! ~ April The Ultimate Way To Learn Windows Vista! Here's the link you need: http://www.worldstart.com/ Enjoy! Time For a New Computer? Another reader asks: I have had my computer for quite some time now and my grandkids are always telling me I need to get a new one. They say mine is too slow and it just doesn't work right. As for me, I'm not convinced. Do you have any guidelines I can follow to see if I really should get a new one or not? Good question! Isn't it funny how everyone's views on the same exact topic can be so different? I mean, it's obvious the person who asked today's question is being bombarded by their grandchildren to get a new computer. And why do you think they want a new one? Well, so they can have all the perks they're used to when they go visit grandma and grandpa, of course! Then on the other hand, grandma and grandpa don't agree and they think their computer works just fine. Well, it's hard to tell who is right here. Children these days are very much into computers and they know a lot more about them than some of us would like to admit. But then again, if our computers are working good enough to do what we want on them, why bother buying a whole new one? That debate could go on and on, so I think I'll end it by giving you some pointers you can follow to see if you really should buy a new computer or not. Let's check them out! First of all, as you all know, technology is changing everyday. There's always something new coming out and there's always something different to try. It's not always pertinent that you go along with those changes, but here are some reasons why you may want to. You need a new computer if: 1.) Your processor speed is less than 1.0 GHz (gigahertz). (On another note, if your computer is still running on megahertz, you'll definitely want to make an upgrade soon!) See, most programs and other applications that you may put on your computer require a lot more power than 1 GHz can give them. If you don't have a fast enough processing speed, your computer will run very slow and you won't be able to browse the Internet, play games, etc. with the ease you should have. You can check your processor speed by going to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System. 2.) Your computer has less than 256 MB of memory. (Again, go to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System to check on that information). If you don't have at least 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM memory, your computer will not run smoothly or to the best of its ability. 3.) You're using a Windows version that starts with a 3 or a 9 (for example, Windows 3.1, 95 and 98). Those older operating systems lack a lot of the features every computer should have these days, including security features and other updates that are required to keep your computer running properly and protected. The same thing applies if you're using a Mac version that is older than OS X. 4.) Your monitor is a 14 inch or smaller. If you don't have at least a 17 inch monitor, you're not going to be able to see full Web sites, which really is a shame! 5.) You're always getting an error message of "Operating system not supported" when you try to install new programs onto your PC. Or, when you're trying to upgrade to a new operating system and you get an error message of "Hardware not supported." 6.) Your computer has no USB ports. Nowadays, most external devices (such as keyboards, mice, printers, etc.) run via USB. Therefore, if you don't have any ports, you're going to have trouble keeping up with the newer computer devices. 7.) Your PC has a 5.25 inch disk drive or even a 3.5 inch floppy drive. Floppy drives are still around, but they're being phased out as well. Software has just outgrown those two drives and they won't be of much use in the near future. Flash and thumb drives are definitely taking over. So, those are just a few things you should look into if you're wondering about buying a new computer or not. They are all good reasons why you should fork out the money and invest in a new PC. And I'm not just saying that to make your grandchildren happy either! With a brand new computer, everyone who uses it (including you) will benefit. Now, I realize you may use your computer on a very limited basis (maybe just for checking your e-mail and playing a game here and there), but if you fall into any of the categories listed above, you should still look into getting a new computer. Yes, I know change is hard to take, but I think once you get your new computer up and running, you will agree with me on everything I said today. On the other hand, if you answered "no" to almost all of the specifications above, you should be fine with the computer you have. And if your grandchildren still complain, just tell them once they give you enough money for a new PC, you'll go right out and buy one. That should do the trick! ~ Erin If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing.
