![]() | WorldStart's Brand New Homepage I have great news for you today. We have finally updated the WorldStart homepage! Just wait until you see it. We’re really excited about all of the changes and great new features! First off, we have updated the look of the homepage. It’s much nicer now (at least we think so!) We’ve also made it more interactive and dynamic. Instead of just a static page, it now automatically shows you a Tip of the Day and a Cool Site as soon as you get there (and yes, they will be different from what you see in the newsletter). We’re going to be putting a new section in the newsletter with a little glimpse of what’s going on each day on the site, so don’t miss it! In addition, we’ve tried to make it an even better place for you to use as your personal homepage. It includes a Google search engine right on the page and it also has an updated version of the Personal Cool Sites feature! If you’re not sure what Personal Cool Sites are, here’s a quick overview. Basically, you can set up a free account with us and add up to 10 of your very own sites right to our homepage. When you land on the homepage (as long as you’re logged in), you’ll see the links to your favorite Web sites displayed on the side. We already have thousands of people who use this fantastic and free feature, so go ahead and give it a try if you'd like! Oh, and that’s not all! The Personal Cool Sites feature now offers a free address book! That’s right, once you’re logged in, you’ll not only see your 10 favorite sites, but also a link for the address book. This free online address book makes it easy to have quick access to all of your contacts (name, address, phone number, e-mail address, Web site, etc). I use it all the time when I’m on the road, because you can log in from any computer! Well, that’s the overview. We sincerely hope you stop by the new homepage and give it a try. We hope you love it as much as we do. Here's the link you need: http://www.worldstart.com Enjoy! ~ Steve Don't stop now! Q: A: First of all, I want to make it clear that this type of thing can happen with any security type program you have installed on your computer (antivirus, anti-spyware, etc). If your new software only asks you to turn off one of them, it's best if you disable them all. All of those programs work as a group to scan your computer for threats and you need to keep them all together, even if turning them off is what you're doing. Now, when you install a new program on your computer, the setup process goes through many different steps and it's possible it will do a lot of new things to your system. Some of those include:
Those are just a few examples, but here's the point I'm trying to make. All of those things are somewhat similar to what a piece of malware does when trying to infect your computer. And since a lot of antivirus programs aren't always accurate when telling the difference, it could end up blocking something your new program needs in order to work properly. In that case, you would end up with a failed install or a successful install that doesn't even really work right. So, as you can see, if the new software you're installing asks you to turn your antivirus program off, you should do it. By doing that, you'll avoid numerous install problems or any trouble you may have on down the road. But let me make it clear that when the install is done, you should turn your antivirus program back on immediately. Again, as soon as you know the install is complete, you need to turn all of your protective software programs back on. That's very important. Otherwise, you'll be using an unprotected computer and that's just bad news! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below: Now, Where Did They Put the Templates? I recently received a question from a reader regarding templates in MS Word 2007. Specifically, where are they? If you're like me and you use the Quick Access Toolbar (or Ctrl + N) to start a new document, you probably go directly to the blank document, right? In other words, no templates are offered to you at all. So, where exactly are they? Well, they are still with the New command, but you have to access them through the Office Button. Once you click New, a whole world of templates will be displayed for you. Select a category and you'll find plenty to choose from! I also found out the same is true for Excel and PowerPoint 2007. It's templates galore! ~ April
Replace Your CD ROM With A DVD Drive! Incredible Deal - DVD Reader / Writer! OK, we got a deal and a half on this one! If you're not afraid to open up your computer and install a new drive, then this is going to blow you away! We have a limited number of LG DVD + RW Drives today! Now, these are drives you install in your computer to replace your CD or CD-R/W drive (or if you need another DVD drive). Let me tell ya - it's NEVER been cheaper to do this fantastic upgrade! First off, these aren't just DVD drives - these are re-writable DVD Drives! They support all the popular format options, so all you need are some blank DVD disks to write to! Imagine - you'll be able to save a WHOPPING 4.7 GIGs of data on a single DVD! That alone makes it a no-brainer upgrade! Oh, and you're gonna love this - these have LightScribe built right in! That means with a compatible blank DVD you can actually use this DVD Drive to "print" on the label side of the DVD! Now THAT'S COOL! Plus, these play DVDs and CDs with the best of 'em. Really fast read seeds - 16X for DVDs and 48X for CDs! WOW!!! Take about fast installs huh? OK, again, these need to be installed into your computer, so if you're not comfortable with pulling your PC apart, this isn't for you. However, if you don't mind getting your hands "dirty" this is a really easy install. Only takes a few minutes (probably takes longer to dig your PC out and get it open, ya know?) What about price? This is gonna just blow you way - Just $38.97 and US shipping is FREE! Why pay $100+ somewhere else??? Killer upgrade for that price! If you're sluggin' along with a some kind of CD drive, treat yourself to one of these! It's never been cheaper! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4288 PS - I'm not kidding about that limited quantity thing - RUN to the site to get in on this special! It's an amazing deal! WOW! 16 Foot USB Extension Cables! Push Your USB 2.0 To The LIMIT! Never Come Up Short! OK, you know how it is - your USB cables are always too short. Drives me nuts too! Well, we have a perfect solution! You gotta check out these 16 FOOT USB 2.0 Extension Cables! What's great about these is that they are what's referred to as a "repeater" cable. See, USB 2.0 can only go 16 feet unassisted. However, if you have a repeater cable like this, you can hook up your existing cable (say 5 foot), and get a total of 21 feet (or whatever length your original cable was)! The cable has a device that "boosts" the signal for you - and it works great (and completely in the background - you don't need to do anything but hook it up) I have one of these and just LOVE it! I recently purchased a new photo printer, but there was no room left on my desk. I have a drop ceiling in my office, so I wanted to run the USB cable up there. However, I was WAAAAAY over 16 feet so it was a crap shoot as far as getting data to my printer was concerned. Well, I grabbed one of these and it's absolutely PERFECT! I have about 24 feet in cable length and it works GREAT! Hey, we all need a little longer USB cable from time to time - this extension cable lets you take it to the MAX! Grab a few - you know you'll need them! You cost? Oh, this is sooo great! You and I both know that a cable from a "big box" store of, say just 10 feet, is going to run you a good 30 bucks! Something like this - I don't even want to think about it! Yikes! Your price? Just $14.97 and US shipping is FREE! I doubt you could even find a short USB extension cable for that kind of money at a local store - and this is the best of the best! A whopping 16 feet and a repeater cable at that! Check it out: http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4289 Don't Toss Out Those Floppies! But then, I began to panic ~ "How am I going to get the data off all of these floppies I have laying around?" I mean, let's face it. The time will come when you really need to get data off a floppy disk and have no way of doing it (trust me, I know). Grab one of these and you'll have a floppy drive that will work on any computer with a USB port! It's also great for notebook computers ~ lightweight and compact so it's easy to store! Your cost? Well, these retail for $50, but not for you :-) You get this for just $24.97 and US shipping is FREE! Grab one today! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=3989 Universal Document Converter You’ve heard of PDF files, right? You may have even tried PrimoPDF, which converts your MS Word documents into PDFs. Well, there’s now an easier way to convert your files into any format you'd like. Let's take a look! What I have for you today is a nifty little plug-in called the Universal Document Converter (you can download it right here). So, what's it do? Well, it converts in the same way your computer prints. You'll find directions below on how to use it once you have it installed. Now, there are several different programs you can convert (you can even do Web pages), but for my example today, I’m going to use Microsoft Word. 1.) First, simply type out your document (or open one that's already put together). 2.) If you’re using Office 2007, press the Office button or click on the File menu if you’re using an earlier version. 3.) Click Print and then select Universal Document Converter as the printer you’re going to use. 4.) Next, click Properties and from the drop down menu, select the file type you'd like to convert over to. 5.) Click OK and then print it. Your document will then convert to the file type you chose. How cool is that?! Note: When you’re converting a Web page to a JPEG image, you can do the same thing as above, but make sure you choose the bottom option labeled "Web page to JPEG" in the Preferences box (instead of Properties). Other than that, go on and enjoy your easy conversions! ~ Brandon Zubek If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing. Malware Threat Center Just today, I found an awesome Web site that helps you stay up to date on security threats around the globe. The SRI International Malware Threat Center is a monitoring site that can tell you loads of information about the newest threats, where they're coming from and who's fighting against them. If you have any interest in knowing what is going on with malware threats and growth, you can check out this site for all the information you will ever need. As you may recall, I wrote an article last week about the number of viruses and malware on the Web today. Well, this Web site will give you the names of those threats and where they're coming from in real time! For those of you who are into more advanced protection, this site will also give you some detailed information about where the threats are coming from and which IP addresses you should block. Now, if you don't get into that kind of advanced security, that's okay too. This site will show you the most common domain names used for phishing and other attacks so that you can avoid them. There's even a section that shows you which antivirus software is best for fighting the most current threats. I think this Web site is a great tool for anyone out there who is concerned about their computer's security. After all, being informed is one of the best ways to stay secure. You can check out the SRI International Malware Threat Center right here.
