Quick Tips

Changing Your OE Password

Are you an avid Outlook Express user? If so, you probably use it on a daily basis for all your e-mail needs, right? And during all that time, do you ever think about your Outlook Express password? If you're like me, you plum forgot that Outlook Express even requires a password. I have mine set to be remembered by OE, so it never really crosses my mind. I know several of you are probably in the same boat as me, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't think about our password from time to time. So, that's exactly what we're going to do today!

Can you even remember the last time you changed your Outlook Express password? Do you even remember what it is? Well, it's important to change your e-mail passwords every now and again to ensure your e-mail accounts stay secure. These days, hackers are able to steal passwords in a matter of seconds, so it's crucial that we change them on a regular basis. Now, changing your password in Outlook Express requires some assistance from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Warning: If you try to do it on your own, your e-mail will literally shut itself down and you will not be able to access it at all.

So, go ahead and give your ISP a call. All you have to do is tell them you would like to change your OE password and they will take it from there. You'll just have to give them some basic information about your account and then tell them what you want your new password to be. Again, you must go through your ISP to change your password. You shouldn't even try to do it yourself, because it will only cause you trouble on down the road. Either way, it's good to change your password at least once a month in order to keep your e-mail as safe and secure as possible. Come on, do it as a gift to yourself!

Announcements

WOW! This was HUGE yesterday! Thank YOU to the hundreds and hundreds who ordered! You'll love it! If you missed out, we want to give you another shot at this amazing program! We've been so impressed by the excellent speed gains - not to mention system tweaks and hard drive space this has saved - that we just had to give you another day at it! Give this one a try - you'll love it!

"If You Only Buy One Program This Year - Grab This One!!"

Make Windows Run Up To 300% FASTER!!

No Kidding - It Made My Computer Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

It's Time To Get That "New Computer" Feeling Back!

Oh WOW!! We just got System Mechanic 7 in and it's by far, the very best program I think I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! This thing is just gonna blow you away! It did me - and I've seen a LOT of software! This thing is nothing short of amazing! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously blown away at how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and it came up with a warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and more secure - computer! And I thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this can make your computer act like it did when you first brought it home - just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! Heck, your computer might even be faster than when you first got it home!! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW!!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? This can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can: Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Computers 101

Q:
I know this is kind of an odd question, but do you have any statistics on the phishing attacks that hit in the year 2007? I was just wondering how everything ended up with them. Thanks for any information you may have!

A:
That's actually a great question and I'm sure you're not the only one out there who has been wondering the same thing. As a matter of fact, I saw some interesting information about phishing attacks awhile back, but I didn't know if you all would be interested in it or not, so I passed it by. But when I saw this question in my e-mail the other day, I figured there were at least a few of you who wanted to know about it, so this one's for you!

So, I guess we might as well get right into it. According to a survey conducted by Gartner market researchers, 3.6 million U.S. citizens were victims of various phishing attacks in the year 2007. Wow, 3.6 million! Can you even imagine? Plus, in the mix of all that, 3.2 billion U.S. dollars were lost as well. That's extremely higher than last year's statistics, which amounted to a loss of 2.3 billion dollars. And as you can probably tell, it's only going to get worse from here on out.

Now, there is one positive note in all of this. In 2007, the average loss per individual person was lowered to $886 from $1,244 in 2006. While that's good news, in the whole scheme of things, the overall damage increased because so many more U.S. citizens gave in to the phishing attacks. The survey also said that most of the phishing attacks came in disguise under the eBay and PayPal names. Of course, there are several others looming around the Web today, but those two seemed to be the most popular last year.

The Gartner company went on to explain that most phishers go for debit card numbers and bank account information first. They said the security measures for that kind of data are a lot less strict than credit card information. And since a lot of people give out that information for their eBay and PayPal accounts, there's no easier way for phishers to get ahold of our personal information.

Gartner said they believe the same kind of phishing attacks will continue to increase until at least 2009. They may even go beyond that unless e-mail providers start to take firmer action against malware. All in all, I know this information is a little scary, but if you continue to use common sense when you're going through your e-mail or when you're signing up for a new online service, you will be just fine. As always, just be cautious of the e-mails you're opening and if something looks suspicious, just delete it. If you use certain Web sites like eBay and PayPal, just make sure you're logging in under a secure connection. If you pay close attention to everything you do online, you will be as safe as you can be.

Plus, if you're not part of that 3.6 million statistic yet, you must be doing something right!

MS Office

A Good Form Isn't So Hard To Find

Do you have rows and rows of data to enter in MS Excel?

If so, do you find it tiresome to navigate through cell after cell to the right and then at the end, go back to the beginning of the next row?

It does seem like a lot of extra navigation work that I, for one, could live without!

So, the next natural thought is to ask if there's a way to streamline the data entry process. Is there a way to cut out all the extra cell navigation and focus mainly on the data entry itself?

The answer, of course, is yes. Your solution can be found in Excel's data entry form.

What's that, you ask?

Well, maybe it's best to hear it straight from the Office Assistant. He says a "data form is a dialogue box that gives you a convenient way to enter or display one complete row of information, or record, in a list at one time."

In other words, let's get away from the cell navigation straight to the data entry and save some time when entering data in MS Excel.

Interested?

If so, read on to get the information you'll need to use a data entry form!

Okay, so we've all decided that data entry forms in Excel are worth a minute to investigate and I wouldn't want to waste any more time. So, let's get right to it!

To begin, you must have column headings for the table of data you're working with.

For example:

Now, select a cell in the first row of the table of data.

For people working with older versions of Excel, you should go to the Data menu, Form choice.

Excel 2007 users don't have it quite that easy. You need to first add the Form button to your Quick Access Toolbar. To do so, click the down arrow to the right of the toolbar and choose More Commands.

Set the "Choose commands from" field to All Commands.

Next, scroll down and select "Form..." and then click the Add button in the center. That will place a button for the Form command into the list on the right, which is a list of the items that will appear in your Quick Access Toolbar.

Click OK to return to Excel.

Now, you need to click the Form button in the Quick Access Toolbar.

No matter what version you're working with, click OK when the warning pops up.

The Data Entry Form will then open, allowing you to enter the data for an entire row.

You can move from field to field using the Tab key. When you've completed one set of data, use the Enter key to place the data into the worksheet and at the same time, create a new record.

When you've entered all your data, click the Close button.

You should then be returned to your worksheet where you'll find all your newly entered data in its proper place and you never had to spend time jumping from cell to cell or row to row!

Need to add new records to the list later?

No problem! The same procedure applies, but you do need to take notice that when you re-enter the data entry form, you are given the first record to start with.

You can use the vertical scroll in the middle of the window to move through the already entered data or if you just need a new record, click the New button.

From there, things will work the same as they did when you first created the table.

With data entry forms in the picture, I'm not sure we could make the job of hand entering data any easier. Yes!

It's so much easier (and less time consuming) than plugging in and unplugging my devices all the time! It generally takes me several minutes just to figure out what USB plug goes to what and whether or not I can afford to be without that item. Just about everyone that has ever used any type of USB device has run into this problem. I know it happens to me just about every time I hook something up (I guess my sense of distance is really off ;-) Well I don't know about you all, but before I started keeping some of these on hand, I'd have to drive to the store and pay $30 for a stupid cable just so I could get everything working just so ~ that's even more annoying!

Tip of the Day

Remember the Milk

As you know, to-do lists are useful tools you can use to keep yourself productive and organized. And today, I'm going to show you a great online service called Remember the Milk that will help you keep track of all your daily tasks! You may think Remember the Milk is a strange name, but how many times have you forgotten to pick up the milk at the grocery story? Or, anything else for that matter! Remember the Milk doesn't want you to forget about anything important ever again. So, let's get started, shall we?!

1.) First, head on over to the sign up page, which is located here. Just fill in some simple information and then click on Sign Up.

2.) A validation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided. You will need to click the confirmation link in the body of that e-mail. Also, there will be another e-mail address provided there. If you send an e-mail to that address, it will be added as a task in your list, which you will see later on.

3.) On the Remember the Milk page, click the Login button located in the upper right corner.

After you do that, you will see your task homepage.

4.) Click the Tasks link in the upper right corner. Then click Add Task.

5.) Next, type a task in the box.

After you have finished, look in the right pane.

6.) From there, you can set different details, such as a due date, the recurrence of a task and other important information. An interesting feature is the Location field. That allows you to select different points on a map to the location of a task. The points are even color coded to the priority of the task.

Another great feature of Remember the Milk is that it has so many options that help remind you of your tasks and appointments. Allow me to show you how to set it up.

1.) First, click the Settings link in the upper right corner of the page.

2.) Now, click the Reminders tab, like this:

3.) You can have daily reminders sent to you at a certain time or if a task has a due date, you can select to have reminders sent to you a certain time before the task is due.

4.) Finally, you can select how to be reminded. Remember the Milk boasts a large list of options. You can select from an e-mail, a text message to your mobile phone or an instant message to various IM services.

Remember the Milk also has something for all of you list lovers, including myself! Under the Settings tab, if you select Lists, you can add lists to your heart's content. Then under Tasks, select a task and use the drop down box to move it to a certain list. Another way you can organize your tasks is to tag them. Tags are similar to labels in Gmail. They are just like lists, except multiple tags can be applied to one task, whereas you can only add a task to one list.

Also, as I said before, if you send an e-mail to the e-mail address that was included in the sign up e-mail, it will automatically be added as a task. Be sure to check that out, because it’s an easy and quick way to add tasks!

These are just some of the features Remember the Milk has to offer. Go ahead and explore around and you will find many more. I hope you enjoy learning about this invaluable organizational tool!

Today's Feature

Wireless Worm

I know I have written before about the importance of securing your wireless network. It's definitely necessary to make sure your computers are safe from intruders. Without having a secure wireless network, your computers are wide open for others to gain access to and do whatever they want with your data. I know all of that is a little scary, but today, I have a completely new issue that will definitely convince you to lock down your wireless router.

Think about this for a minute. How many times have you looked at the list of available wireless networks in range of your computer? If I look at the list here at WorldStart, I can see three of them right off the bat. That means that right now, if I had the password, I could connect to three different wireless connections.

Now, I'm sure some of you are thinking, “big deal!” Well, that's what I thought until I read a report the other day about the possibility of a worm that can spread through wireless routers. Researchers at Indiana University did a study on the possibility of a wireless router worm. This worm could spread by first infecting one wireless router and then connecting to all other wireless routers in range and infecting them. Those routers would then, in turn, do the same thing until all the wireless routers in range were infected.

Based on a study of New York City, a worm of this type could easily reach 20,000 routers within just a few days.

The only thing that can stop a worm of this type from spreading is having a strong password on your wireless router. If the worm cannot guess the password, it cannot access your router and will not spread. This is just another reason to make sure you have changed the default passwords on your wireless router.

Now, I'm not going to leave you hanging. Here's how to change the password on your wireless router:

1.) First, you need to find the address of your router. In Windows XP, go to Start, Control Panel. From there, click on Network Connections. Next, double click on your Wireless Network Connection and then go to the Support tab. Write down the Default Gateway address (it should start with 192.168).

2.) Next, you need to log in to your router. To do so, open your Web browser and in the address bar, type the Default Gateway address you wrote down. Then press Enter on your keyboard. That should bring you to a log in screen. Type in the username and password for your router. (If you don't know the username and password, you may need to check your router's manual).

3.) Lastly, you need to change your router's password. Every router is a little different, but you should be able to find an Administrator area on the screen. In that area, you will see a place to change the password for your router. Make sure your password is something you will remember, but also something that will not be guessed easily. It should not be a word, but rather capital letters, lowercase letters and numbers all mixed together.

After changing your password, click OK and you'll be all set. Doing this will definitely help to keep the worms out. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

~ Gary

Cue Prompter

Whether you need a teleprompter for your child's school play or just for fun, you’ll find this free one to be pretty awesome! A school play was the only practical idea I could come up with for why the average person might need a teleprompter. But then again, who cares about practicality? This could be a lot of fun!

To get started, just type in the text you want to scroll across the teleprompter or you could copy and paste a script of something. Next, choose the font size and screen size you want to use and then click Start Prompter! I left it at the default "big" setting. You have up to 2,000 characters you can put in the text box as well.

The teleprompter opened in a new tab for me, so I’m guessing it will pop up in its own window for you. Along the top of the page, you have the Control Panel for the teleprompter. It is on the gray strip across the top. The controls are:

PgUp^ - This makes the text page go up to the top of your text.

Reverse – This scrolls the text back up.

Stop - This stops the text completely.

Forward – Click this to get the text scrolling. Clicking it multiple times will speed up the scroll.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 - These numbers represent the different scroll speeds you can choose from. Just click the numbers to speed up the scroll or slow it down.

F11 – This makes the page a full screen.

I couldn’t get the Norm or Mirror buttons to work, so I don’t know exactly what they do, but don't worry, you don’t need them to use this.

Another great aspect of this teleprompter is that it is free for both commercial and non-commercial use. So, if you’re recording a commercial, newscast or something of the like, you could use this instead of paying for a teleprompter machine.

I just think this Web site is so nifty and I wanted to share it with all of you. Enjoy!
