 | What's Your Handle? If you chat online, you probably have a handle, right? Did you know that or are you not sure what a handle even is? Well, it's also known as a screenname and it's just a name you make up to use in a chat room to disguise your real name and information. Keep reading for all the details! Most of you have probably heard of a screenname, but the more technical term is a handle. You can use them in chat rooms, when you're playing online games, when you sign up for certain giveaways, newsletters, jokes, etc. Another example is the username you may use on WorldStart's Web site. It's all the same thing. You can always use a handle whenever you don't want anyone to find out your real identity, which is a very smart thing to do! There are tons of handles out there. Some are very unique, while others are a little strange. They're all just a representation of who you are! Your handle might contain your initials and something you really like. Let's say you really like horses (my mom loves cows, so her handle is MommyMoo) and your initials are MJ. Your handle could be MJluvshorses or something similar. When you're making up your handle, you should have fun with it. It can be wacky, serious or whatever you want. One of my handles is magerin, because my dad always used to call me Erin Magerin. Head to the site and grab 'em while you can! 20% Off TODAY ONLY!!! Q: A: Go to Start, Control Panel and find the Display icon. Windows XP users need to make sure they are in the classic view of the Control Panel to find the Display icon. All other users should find it right away. Now, click on the Screen Saver tab and choose the screensaver you want displayed on your computer. You can also choose how much time you would like to have before the saver turns on. If you use Windows 95, 98, ME, NT or 2000, you can check the "Password protected" box and then pick a password to use. You can type in a different password by clicking the Change button. If you're using XP, Windows is automatically going to use the same password you have selected for your log in screen. So, if you don't already have a password for your log in screen, you'll need to create one in order to have one for your screensaver. You can follow this tip to do that first. Once you have that done, go back to the Display icon and the Screen Saver tab and make sure the box that says "On resume, display Welcome screen" is checkmarked. So, every time you want to come out of your screensaver, you will need to put that password in to continue on with your work. I Can See Clearly Now Have you ever been frustrated while trying to insert a picture from a file? It's a bit of a pain unless you've named them really well, isn't it? If the files have all those vague names that are sometimes nothing more than dates or combinations of numbers and letters, you're completely lost. You insert one after another, just looking for the right one. What a pain! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to see the picture before you select it for insertion? Yep, I agree with you on that one! Well, here's a quick way to see what you've got before you put it into your file. Obviously, you need to go to the Insert menu, Picture submenu, From File choice. (In Office 2007, you're looking for the Insert ribbon, Picture button). When the Insert Picture window opens, you need to change the way you view your files. You're looking for the Views button. In older versions of MS Office, the button looks like this: In Office 2007, you're looking for this button: If you repeatedly click the button, you'll find that the window rotates through the various ways it can display your files. If you click on the down arrow that's connected to the button, you'll see a list of viewing choices. (You may find that the list varies slightly from version to version). Choose a different view option, such as Preview or Icons in 2007, to see the actual picture. Whichever you prefer, you should be able to find your picture much faster once you can see your choices clearly! ~ April
Copy Protection Have you ever purchased a music CD (or any other CD or a DVD) in hopes of making some extra copies for your friends or family members? Well, despite how "wrong" some people think that might be, it happens all the time. Some people look at it as they bought the CD with their own money and they should be able to do whatever they want with it. Well, some music labels and other companies don't agree and they have been placing what is called a copy protection on some of the CDs they sell. This technique is also known as copy prevention or copy restriction and it is just basically a measure they take to prevent any duplication of the material they sell. This type of thing sometimes happens on other types of CDs (software) and DVDs as well. There have been some major debates over this issue in the past and there will probably be more in the future. Customers are mad because they can't make a backup copy, they can't install the CD onto their computer and they can't upload any of the music onto their digital audio player, such as an iPod or MP3 player. The customer's argument is that it's violating their property rights. On the other hand, most companies place a copy protection on their CDs because they believe it will increase their revenue by forcing people to buy another copy of the CD if they want a second dose. Not all discs have the copy protection embedded on them, but it is becoming more and more widely used these days. So, if you ever have trouble making a second copy, check the CD for details, because it will probably tell you that it's copy restricted. If that's the case, you're unfortunately out of luck, but at least you can enjoy the one copy you do have! ~ Erin If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing.
Don't Block Yourself Do you occasionally send e-mail to yourself? Has it started going to your Deleted Items or Junk folder? If so, you may have accidentally added your own address to your spam filter's enemy list or you may have even reported yourself as spam. What's that you say? You would never do that? Well, I didn't think I would either, but the other day, I was going through my Inbox and deleting spam when I noticed it forged my e-mail address as the sender. So, if I clicked it as spam, added it to my blocked list or reported it, I would be reporting myself. Yikes! So, I'm just telling you to make sure you look before you report, banish or block your e-mails. If you don't, you may be punishing yourself. Be sure to check your filter's enemy list or your message rules to see if you're being blocked. That's all you have to do. It is a Web based word processor that I’ve quickly come to adore. In order to use it or even take a gander at it, you need to click the Sign Up link in the top right corner of the page. Just provide a name, e-mail address, a password, agree to their terms and you’re ready to go! It works with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. To be honest, I’ve stopped writing up my cool sites in Microsoft Word and have started writing them on this site instead. Once you’ve registered, the processor will load and you will see a document already there. Whatever could it be? It is titled "Welcome to Buzzword Preview." This document welcomes you to the program and explains how it works, what features it currently has and how you can get help with it. I personally believe this is a must read for anyone who wants to use this processor efficiently. It only takes a few minutes to read through and it is so helpful! You should at least read enough so that you know what the menu symbols are for. That is a definite "need to know" before you get started. I fully expected there to be a good deal of delay between what I typed and what appeared on my screen and I was shocked to find it was as responsive as using a word processing program installed on the computer. It has several fonts for you to choose from, which are all nice, crisp and easy to read. You’ll notice it can handle lists, word wraps around pictures and make tables. Buzzword is in beta right now, so all your comments are very useful. To submit a comment, just click the teal chat bubble button and choose Add a Comment. Or, you can read what others have to say just by clicking Show Comments. You’ll also notice a menu at the very top of the page. The categories in it are: Document, Edit, Insert and Help. I want to discuss the Edit and Insert tabs with you a little bit. Under the Edit tab, you will find Check Spelling. I was thrilled to find that there! Then under the Insert tab, you will find the insert menu for images, links, special characters and more. I hope you all fall in as much love with Buzzword as I have. Go check it out.
