Quick Tips

End Users

You probably hear that term all the time, right? For one, I know we use it in our articles quite a bit. So, have you ever wondered what it actually means? You might have an idea, but would you like a more descriptive definition of the term? If so, keep reading!

An end user is basically anyone who a software program or a hardware piece is created for. In other words, it's any user of computer products. In even less words, it's you! You are a consumer and those products are made for people like you to buy them and use them. The term is based on an "end goal," in hopes that the consumer likes the product and that it is useful for them.

End users are put into different categories than what the installers, administrators, developers and programmers are. They create programs and other devices to be tested, marketed, installed, etc. Consumers like you are then able to use them and in turn, you help them reach their full potential. You also help troubleshoot the products by calling tech support and asking about certain things that aren't working. That helps the programmers and everyone else involved to discard any bugs or mistakes that may lie within the item. Don't you feel special knowing that you, an end user, does all that? I sure do!

FREE - 5-in-1 Card Reader!!

TODAY ONLY 12-31-2007!

Yours FREE With Any Order Today!

WOW - This Is A MUST-HAVE For Digital Camera Owners!

This handy little compact USB device lets you easily read and write to SD/MMC digital memory cards! Not only can you quickly and easily access data on your SD/MMC memory cards, but you can turn your SD/MMC card into a mobile flash storage device! How cool is that?!?

OK, first off, I love memory card readers. In fact, I rank them up with my mouse and keyboard when it comes to must-have accessories for my computer. They make it SOOOOOO much easier to get the images off my digital camera's memory card.

You just plug it into your computer and leave the reader on top of your desk. As soon as you're done shooting, just pop the card out of your camera and into the reader. From there, it's simply a matter of dragging and dropping the images to your hard drive. It couldn't be any easier!

The really cool thing is that these are USB 2 readers, so they're really fast (yes, they still work if you have USB 1.x). You'll have your pictures downloaded before you know it!

Here, take a look at the features:

USB 2.0 interface (USB 1.1 compliant)

Supports 5 types of memory cards

Reads and writes to flash cards

LED indicator light

Plug and Play

Portable-compact design and low power consumption

These also work great with regular files. Let's say you need to move a 50 Meg file from one computer to another. It sure won't fit on a floppy, and sending it via e-mail would take forever. With your card reader, you could use the card from your camera to move the file. We have people who buy these just for that purpose!

Again, this is one accessory I can't do without - in fact, everyone I know who has a card reader says the same thing. It's so much easier than messing around with the camera, looking for connection cables, and fighting with special software.

Want one? I don't blame ya! The great news is that these are 100% FREE with any purchase today (12-31-2007) of ANY amount! When we say ANY amount, we mean ANY amount! You can even order from our Bargain Bin and we'll still include this 5-in-1 Card Reader with your order - FREE! Is that great or what?

Or, just head to the website and check it all out right here:

http://store.worldstart.com/home.php

*Offer void where prohibited, does not include auction items.

NOTE - Our shopping cart isn't smart enough to show the 5-in-1 Card Reader in your cart, but don't worry - you'll get it with your order :-) Have a Safe and Happy New Year!!!!

Q:
What is a social network?

A:
That's a great question, because you might be in a social network right now and not even know it! A social network is also known as a virtual community and they are related to profile sites. Basically, they are just certain Web sites that help bring people together so that they can make new friends, chat, share interests, share ideas and so on.

It's amazing how many social network sites are available on the Web today and more and more are popping up each day. As I mentioned above, social networks are related to profile sites, which are sites that allow you to create a profile for yourself for others to view. I know many of you may be thinking about online dating sites or something similar, but that's not exactly what a social network is all about. (Online dating sites can be considered social networks, but there's a lot more to them than that).

You can make a profile for yourself and include a picture if you want, some of your background information, your hobbies, etc. Other people your age can find you and you can make new e-mail friends all over the world. It's a fun way to spend time on your computer, because you can meet all kinds of different people and learn all about them as well. Plus, you don't have to tell anyone anything about yourself if you don't want to. You can be as open or as private as you wish.

Some of the more popular social network sites today are:

  • Bebo - This site allows you to share photos, stories and even your own journal with friends and family, either privately or publicly.

  • Classmates - Some of you may have heard of this site before. It helps you find your old friends from high school. You can search for them, find out where they're living, what they're up to and keep in touch with them forever.

  • Friendster - This site helps bring people together from around the world who have similar interests.

  • MySpace - This is one of the more popular sites on the Internet today. You can create a profile here and even post a blog if you want. Other people can also leave you messages on your page.

  • Yahoo! 360 - This site allows you to make your own personal Web page with a journal, pictures, favorite links, etc. You can then share your page with your friends and also view theirs. You do need a Yahoo! ID and password for this particular site.

Of course, if you don't feel comfortable being a part of a social network, there is nothing wrong with that, but the option is always there if you do change your mind. Also, parents should keep in mind that some of these sites are popular hang out places for predators. As parents, you should always be involved in your child's computer activities and know which sites they are visiting.

If you decide to use one of these sites, make sure you're comfortable with each person you're talking to. These sites are a fun way to meet new people and learn new things, but you can never be too careful. Check them out!

MS Office

One Change = Many Changes

Have you ever had an MS Excel workbook that you're constantly working in, making the same changes to several different worksheets?

What did you do?

Did you go to the first sheet, make changes, move to the next sheet, make the same changes, move to the next sheet, make the same changes again and so on?

How tiresome was that?

Want a quicker way to make identical changes on different sheets?

Maybe a way that allows you to make just one set of changes that will include all of the necessary worksheets?

Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?!

Well, there's no need to pinch yourself. You're not dreaming. It can be done and it doesn't require any special feature or function. You just have to know about a couple extra clicks!

Ready to get started?

Yes?

Good, let's get going!

  • The first thing you need to do is go to the first worksheet to be changed/edited.

  • Next, you need to select the sheet tabs of all the worksheets that need the same changes.

    • To select a series of tabs, hold down the Shift key and click on the last sheet tab in the series. You should see that the first, last and all tabs in between are selected simultaneously.

    • If you have non-consecutive sheets to change, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the tab for each sheet to be changed.

  • Once you have all the tabs selected, you're ready to begin your changes.

So, go ahead and make those changes, only on the visible sheet. Be sure not to click out of that sheet or you will deselect all of the sheets.

Are your changes all done?

If so, click on another sheet tab.

Immediately, you should notice that the multiple tabs are no longer highlighted.

Now, it's time to notice something way more exciting!

Take a look at all the sheets you had selected to change.

Wow!

All of the changes on all of the selected sheets, including data, formatting, etc., have been completed in one simple move!

It's time to do your little happy dance!

~ April

Tip of the Day

eBay Presentation

Are you looking to sell some of your things on eBay? Need some help figuring out how you should present yourself? If so, I've got just the thing for you today! I know eBay is a very popular thing these days and it seems like everyone you talk to has sold or bought something from the Web site at one point or another. If you go to eBay's Web site to sell something, they have very detailed step by step instructions on how to start and complete the process, but what about presenting yourself? You want to look good to any potential buyers, so how can you get your point across in a polite manner? Well, keep reading for some tips!

When looking to buy something on eBay, buyers look for products that are well defined, have detailed information about them, look good, have a fair price, etc. So, that's what you want to focus on. Make sure your sales pitch relates to something you would consider if you were in the buyer's shoes. The main things you may want to focus on are the payment methods, the shipping methods and the packaging. You want all of those to be convenient for both yourself and the buyer.

Payment - The most popular way to accept payment is probably through a PayPal account. It is the easiest way to get payment from people and it's the fastest transaction you can do. You receive the money quickly and you can therefore, send the item out faster as well. When you sign up for an account, make sure you get verified, because buyers will see that as a reliable source. You can of course accept credit card payments and checks by mail, but be extra cautious with either of those payment options. If for some reason a credit card is maxed out or a check is bad, you may get stuck with overcharge fees in the end. Also, checks or money orders take longer to process and it will take longer for the item to be shipped and received. You always want to try and make the transaction as fast as possible for all parties involved.

Shipping - When weighing an item for a shipping price, you'll want to be as accurate as possible. It's smart to maybe have a shipping scale to use, especially if you are going to be selling several items. You should also familiarize yourself with the different shipping plans eBay offers. You can send it by regular mail, Priority, etc. Choose one that will be a fair price for yourself and the buyer. If you tack on a huge shipping charge to an item, buyers may stray away from you and look elsewhere. You also want to be fair to yourself and charge enough to the customer to cover the actual shipping costs you'll have to take care of. This is where the accuracy in weight and the different shipping options come into play.

Some people on Ebay like to make extra money by jacking up the shipping cost, but if you think about it, that's not really fair. Always be honest in what you're selling and you will gain respect back.

Packaging - You should always be prepared and have several shipping boxes, labels, tape, etc. handy for whenever you sell an item on Ebay. If you sell multiple things at once, you never know when a sale will go through, so you should always have enough supplies to handle it all. If you have a lot of different sized items, be sure you have the right boxes, etc. for all of them as well. Once again, the type of packaging you use plays a hand in the shipping cost. Make sure you use the appropriate sizes and don't cheat yourself out of any money by having to pay for a little extra weight from a box.

Okay, now that we've talked about how you should handle the money aspect of selling on eBay, let's discuss a little about the "look" value. When entering your item on eBay, you should obviously make it look and sound as good as possible. The better it sounds, the more people will be interested in buying it. For your description, highlight the good aspects with a positive energy. People will be able to sense how you feel about the product you're selling. If you describe it in a boring way, buyers will pass you by. It's also a good idea to use photos with your description. Buyers always like to see what they're getting, so be truthful and put a real picture of the item there. It's said that people are more likely to buy an item with a picture than without. That will help your selling efforts quite a bit!

eBay also lets you change some colors of your text and bold print the text, if you choose to do so. You should do that if you're willing to pay the extra service charge. Create something that will catch a buyer's eye and something that will make them want to start bidding on your item right away. And that's the whole point, right?

If you follow these tips, you won't have any trouble selling your items, because you're being fair, eye catching and truthful. There's nobody that doesn't appreciate that!

New Year's Eve History

Today, I wanted to bring you a little history on New Year's Eve! I chose to look at a very famous American tradition: the history of the celebration in Times Square. I remember trying to stay up to watch the ball drop as a little kid. Every year, I'd set up my pillows and blankets in front of the TV, eat my share of the party snacks and then end up crashing before the ball dropped!

If you ask me, the celebration at Times Square is an amazing phenomenon that has packed the square full of celebrants since its start in 1904. Even during the depression, the New Year was rung in at Times Square, although they did forgo the lights.

You will find the history of the Times Square celebration here on this Web site. I was really surprised by how much I didn't know about the celebration and its tradition. It is amazing to me that people travel from all over the world to be in Times Square on New Year's Eve.

You can also check out the Times Square timeline at the bottom of the page. It is pretty nifty! It is an interactive timeline and it dates all the way back to the 1890s. Also, if you're looking for even more information, you can check out the side menu, where you will find information on the ball itself. The section you want for that is About the New Year's Eve Ball. I found that section particularly interesting, because you get to discover what the ball has been made out of over the years and the history behind it.

Well, this is it for me in 2007. I'll see you all in 2008!
