 | Printer Resolution If you know anything about printers at all, you probably know that, like monitors, they work with a certain resolution rate. Monitors have to be set at a certain resolution to bring out the best quality view for you while you use your computer. Well, printers have to do the same thing so that everything you print is eye catching and just the way you want it. You don't want your print jobs leaving something to desire, so you have to make sure you have the correct resolution set for your printer. Let's check it out! The resolution for printers is measured in DPI (dots per inch). So, for example, your printer may be able to print at a 600 DPI level, which means it can print 600x600 per square inch of your paper (or 360,000 dots per inch). Printers that don't have a high resolution rate may give you what is called "jaggies," which simply means the images or text have little jagged edges. Believe me, you don't want jaggies! Luckily, new inkjet and laser printers come with a technology that allows them to print little dots where the jagged edges lie, which fills them in so that they're not as noticeable. Hewlett Packard was the first printer company to come out with this, but other manufacturers are developing edge enhancements for their printers as well. Depending on what type of printer you have, you can find your resolution setting by poking around in your settings or preferences area under the menus in your printer software. If all else fails and you really want to know, try the Help menu as well. I think that will really help you begin to understand its concept. The Last Known Good Configuration is basically a copy of a computer's hardware configuration and its driver settings. It is taken from the system's registry readings when a computer has a good, clean boot up. This copy is made for whenever a computer fails to boot up successfully. When that happens, the system's operating system is able to pull up the good copy and perform a successful startup. The Last Known Good Configuration feature is available for any Windows operating system from NT on. Also, if your computer does happen to have some problems during its boot up, Windows will detect that and it will actually add the copy of your last successful boot to your startup menu. That way, you can go and access it from that point and start your boot up correctly again. This feature is mostly helpful after new drivers or devices are installed on your system. If either of those had an error while the install was in process, you can still go back and get a clean boot. One more thing: every time your computer boots up correctly, the Last Known Good Configuration record is replaced with the newest one. That way, you have the most recent successful boot for your computer to start with. Okay, so now that all of that is out of the way, are you wondering how you can actually use this on your own computer? I thought you might! For this, I'm going to use an example. Let's say you just installed a new driver on your system. It seems like the installation was done right, but for some reason, your computer will not start up like it usually does. Well, this is exactly where the Last Known Good Configuration comes in handy. To start your computer using the Last Known Good Configuration that your computer has on record, simply start up your computer like normal and when you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message come up, hit the F8 key on your keyboard. Next, the Windows Advanced Options menu will appear and you can use your keyboard's arrow keys to scroll down to the "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" option. Once you've got it highlighted, press Enter. Your computer will then boot up successfully and you'll be able to look into what caused the problem in the first place. Now, keep in mind that the Last Known Good Configuration feature does not automatically fix the problems you were having. It will only get your computer started so that you can troubleshoot the rest of the problem on your own. Either way, it's an easy way to combat your computer startup troubles. Why Are These Columns Numbered? Here's a little tidbit that comes from a reader's question! The reader was having difficulty with MS Excel's column labeling feature. Instead of letters for column headers, she had numbers. (Did you notice the cell name given in the corner? Obviously not what most of you are used to). It was driving her crazy, because it didn't match the other systems she worked on at school and/or work. So, what's the deal here? Is the one system just "out of whack" or what? Can it be "fixed?" Good questions! Yes, it can be fixed! To retrieve your beloved letter headings, simply begin with Excel's Options. For older versions of Excel, they're found via the Tools menu, Options choice. In the Options dialogue window, you're looking for the General tab. In Excel 2007, you need the Excel Options button, which is located in the bottom right corner of the Office Button menu. You need the Formulas section under Excel's options. In any version, you'll need to uncheck the "R1C1 reference style" box. Click OK. Poof! Your missing letters have been returned. If only everything could be so easy to retrieve! ~ April

RSS Advantages Have you been wondering why RSS feeds are taking over the Web? Well, allow me to tell you! RSS feeds have swept across the computer scene and many people have gotten hooked, while others are still leery about giving them a try. We have done several other tips on RSS feeds before, but just in case you're still not sure what they are, read here before you go on with this article. It will give you some background information you'll need to know. Some people think that RSS feeds are going to eventually overtake e-mail. While I don't think it will go that far (some people just can't live without their e-mail!), they are very popular and they will probably gain even more recognition in the future. So, what is so great about RSS feeds? How are they better than what you already get in your e-mail each and every day? Well, keep reading for some new points of view on this subject! 1.) RSS feeds are more timely. If you are subscribed to a certain feed, you can get updates on it immediately. You can hear all of the breaking news as soon as it happens and you can even connect in to other sources of information, such as independent reporters, researchers, analysts, etc. With RSS feeds, you are almost always the first to get the recent news and information. 2.) RSS feeds are inexpensive. You usually don't have to pay for the information to come to your computer. There's no more paying for delivery, distribution or for any mailing lists. Certain feeds may require a fee, but most of them are free of charge. 3.) RSS feeds come in any style. They are compatible with text, HTML, AOL or even MIME. They will always arrive in a form that your computer is compatible with, so you don't have to worry about not being able to read the information. 4.) You don't have to have an e-mail program to get an RSS feed. They all can be read online easily and quickly. You no longer have to worry about opening your e-mail and searching for the new messages. Just log on to the Web site where your feed comes from and you're all set. You can still get the feeds delivered to your e-mail if you want, but it's not necessary. 5.) You, as the subscriber, are in full control of your RSS feeds. If you ever want to remove yourself from a list, you can do so very easily. You don't have to worry about not being taken off a mailing list. You can do it yourself and you will know for sure that you were removed. 6.) RSS feeds stay private. If you choose not to, you don't have to give out any personal information when you sign up for a feed. You don't have to give your name or even your e-mail address. This ensures that your information will not be sold to any other companies. RSS feeds are very secure in this matter. 7.) RSS feeds can not be blocked by spam or e-mail filters. Sometimes you sign up for newsletters that won't come through to your e-mail no matter what you do. There's nothing more frustrating than that, as many of you know! Well, that won't happen with RSS feeds. It's impossible! Now, I could go on with some more features, but I think you get the idea. RSS feeds do have a lot of advantages over what a regular e-mail program can do for you. While the RSS phenomenon won't completely take over e-mail, it is a good source of information and it can be accessed with just a couple clicks of your mouse. Give it a try. Camera Lock Ups Have you ever been out shooting and suddenly, your camera stopped responding? It looks like it's on, but nothing works. No dials, no buttons, it's just completely locked up. I know it's happened to me a time or two and no amount of pounding it on the hood of my Jeep seems to make any difference! So, when a friend called this weekend and told me he was shooting some pictures and his camera locked up, I knew exactly what to tell him to do! I told him to take his camera and bang it on the hood of his car. He asked, "Really?!" "Yep, go out and give it a good whack and see what happens," I replied, seeing how long he'd go for it. "Come on, Steve! How do I fix it?" Ahh, the game was over! So, I told him the secret, tried and true method that has always pulled me through: remove the battery, wait a minute and then put the battery back in. He tried it and everything went back to working as normal. Anytime I lock up a digital camera, this trick seems to get it back up and running. So, for occasional lock ups, keep this in mind! With that said, if your camera locks up on a regular basis, there may be a more serious problem. Try changing the batteries and also try a different memory card. If neither of those seem to stop the lock ups, it's probably time for some further repair. That's just something to keep in mind.
