So, if you're a long time Winamp user (or if you'd like to start using it), you've got to check this out! With all of the updates and changes made to it, Winamp 5.51 is nothing short of amazing. I, myself, have used Winamp for a few years now and I absolutely love what this new version brings to the table. Let's take a look, shall we?!

Now, the list of new features for Winamp 5.51 is much too long for me to go over right here in the newsletter, but I will give you a sneak peek! For starters, this new release includes a completely redesigned interface with a new album art feature. Winamp also now comes with multiple device support, which includes MP3 players and iPods. Plus, with an MP3 player, you can even experience surround sound effects. Awesome! Another great new feature is the Media Monitor, which allows you to organize your music into playlists for easy listening. You can also catch up on artist and concert information with the new Smart Search feature.

And that's not even half of it! With Winamp 5.51, you're granted access to thousands of online radio stations and videos. There is also a new feature called Auto-Tagger and it allows you to add automatic updates to your music files. It's just another easy way you can keep all of your music in check. There is also a new Winamp toolbar you can download that enables you to control Winamp right from your Web browser. It doesn't get any easier than that! If you want more, you can see a complete list of the new features on this Web site. Then whenever you're ready to download Winamp 5.51, just visit this link and hit the Download Winamp - Free button. Your Computer - On Overdrive!

Make Windows Run Up To 300% FASTER!!

No Kidding - It Made My Computer Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

It's Time To Get That "New Computer" Feeling Back!

Oh WOW!! We just got System Mechanic 7 in and it's by far, the very best program I think I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! This thing is just gonna blow you away! It did me - and I've seen a LOT of software! This thing is nothing short of amazing! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously blown away at how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and it came up with a warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster - and more secure - computer! And I thought I was as tweaked out as it could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this can make your computer act like it did when you first brought it home - just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! Heck, your computer might even be faster than when you first got it home!! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW!!

This is just sooo cool - it'll really crank up your boot speed, make your programs launch faster, get Windows to load quicker - and stay fast as you use it through the day, recover system memory, defragment and speed up the registry, even defragment specific programs to make them run faster - told ya it was impressive!

Want to surf the Internet at up to 300% faster? This can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the Internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how fast your connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can: Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize Explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Speaking of speed - did you know that the #1 way to slow your system is to have too many programs running in the background? This simple thing alone can drag your system to an absolute crawl! Want to know something else? There are about 20 different places programs can hide themselves in order to get started when Windows does! Yikes! Want to take control? This makes it as simple as clicking your mouse! You'll be blown away at how much faster your computer runs just after this one little tweak!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really topnotch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

What about your hard drive? If that dies, you can kiss that data on it good-bye! All your favorite sites, family photos, business docs, music, movies - everything's gone when that drive crashes (not IF - WHEN it goes). If there's a data problem that could cause you to lose your data, this can scan for it and fix it. If your hard drive is about to crash, there are sometimes subtle warnings - and this can notify you if things are about to take a turn for the worst with your data! Having this installed may be the difference between keeping your data and kissing it good-bye!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

It's even won some awards! Here's just a few:

Q:
I really wanted to get my grandson an iPod for Christmas, but they were just too expensive. Now, his birthday is coming up and while I'd like to get him one, I don't want to spend all that money. Are there any alternative music players for children that he might like just as well? If so, please tell me all about them!

A:
You wouldn't believe how many e-mails and phone calls I've gotten in the last few weeks about this very same thing! It seems like all of you parents and grandparents want your children and grandchildren to have the very latest in a media player, but when it really comes down to it, they're just too expensive! You shouldn't have to spend that much money on your youngins. So, in light of saving you all a little dough, I've got three alternative media players for you today that have the potential to make you very happy. Let's check 'em out!

1.) Sansa Shaker - The first one comes from the SanDisk company and it is an MP3 player that is designed specifically for children. The Sansa Shaker comes with an SD memory card filled with pre-loaded music, but you can download your child's favorite music to it as well. It also comes with a pair of earbuds for your child to use, but if they're even too young for that, they can listen to their music with the Shaker's built-in speaker. It even has a second jack so that you can listen with them as well! The Sansa Shaker runs off of a AAA battery, which allows for at least 10 hours of playback. But don't worry, your child will not be able to access the battery area by themselves. That part is meant for grown-ups only!

The Sansa Shaker comes in both blue and pink, so it's perfect for either a little boy or girl. Now, like I said, it is completely designed for young children. With the Sansa Shaker, your child can have complete control over their music with the easy to use fast forward, rewind and volume controls. So, why is it called the Shaker, you ask? Well, if your child wants to change their music selection, all they have to do is shake the player and it will be done! They can even make some pretty cool sound effects with just a little shake. The Sansa Shaker is very lightweight, it comes with a USB cable for either a PC or Mac and it even comes with stickers your child can use to personalize their player. The Sansa Shaker goes for approximately $29 for the 512 MB size or $49 for the 1 GB style. Either way, it's much cheaper than an iPod and it's kid friendly!

2.) Transformer MP3 Player - As you can probably tell, this MP3 player was designed with the popular movie The Transformers in mind. It was designed by both Takara Tomy and the SoundWave company. This media player starts out looking like a normal portable audio player, but it can be transformed into the action figure of Decepticon. It comes complete with two weapons and four hands, just like the movie. What kid doesn't love that?! The Transformer MP3 player comes with a 1 GB mini-SD memory card, which goes into the action figure's chest. It runs on one AAA battery for approximately six hours and it gives off an audio frequency range of 60Hz. It also comes with earphones, so your child can enjoy their music all on their own!

The Transformer MP3 player comes in either blue or white and it goes for $129.99. For even more Transformers fun, you can get Frenzy and Rumble as earphones for $37.99 or Convoy as an iPod docking station with speakers for $109.99. Yes, they're a little more pricey, but if your child or grandchild loves The Transformers, you can't beat it!

3.) Disney MP3 Players - These next media players come from none other than Disney! They have designed several MP3 players that are perfect for young children. For the girls, there is the Princess Flower model, along with a Cheetah Girls style and for the boys, there's a Pirates of the Caribbean version. There are even Hanna Montana and High School Musical players available as well. There really is something for everyone!

All of these MP3 players come with built-in rechargeable batteries that can last up to 10 hours at a time. They are compatible with both PCs and Macs and they work with MP3, WMA, Disney Mix Clips and data files. They are made with both plastic and metal, but they are very lightweight and small in size. All of them come with audio jacks, lanyards, earbuds and a USB port for a computer hookup. The prices vary depending on the model you get and how much memory the player holds. A lot of the 256 MB styles have been marked down to $29.99, while some of the 512 MB versions are $49.99. All of that just depends on what you decide to buy!

Now, I know none of these are anything like an iPod, but they're definitely more kid friendly, they're less expensive and let's face it, they're just more fun! I truly believe if you give your child or grandchild one of these MP3 players, they will love it just as much and you'll save yourself some hassle as well. What could be better than that?!

MS Office

No More Saving One at a Time

Tired of saving e-mail attachments one at a time in MS Outlook?

I mean, you have to save them all, but who wants to go through opening each one and saving them separately? Not me! So, how can you expedite the situation and save them all in one quick move?

That's a good question and fortunately, I have a good answer!

Here's the scoop on saving many attachments (to the same folder location) with one swift move.

First, select the e-mail that has the attachments to be saved.

Next, you'll need the File menu, Save Attachments submenu.

When the submenu opens, it will list all of the attachments and at the bottom, you should see a choice for All Attachments. Go ahead and select it.

The Save All Attachments dialogue window will then open, allowing you to modify your choice from "All" to just some of the files. You may need to use the Ctrl key to deselect something if you really weren't looking to save all of them.

When you've made sure the highlighted list represents the files you need to save, click OK.

A window will then appear that works just like all of the windows where you save files. Navigate to the folder where the files should be saved and click OK.

That's it! They've all been saved with one quick process.

Now, obviously, that method puts all of the files into one location. If you have different locations for different groups of attachments, you will need to repeat the process and select different files to save each time.

Save one, save two or save them all. It's up to you now!

~ April

Tip of the Day

Unplugged: Plug and Play

Plug and play: I’m sure most of you have heard that term before, right? But, for those of you who don’t know exactly what it means, plug and play is a feature that allows a user to add a device to their computer, without having to reconfigure anything or install any manual drivers. A couple examples of plug and play devices are flash drives and MP3 players.

Okay, let’s say someone gave you a new MP3 player for Christmas and the box says its "plug and play!" So, you expect to plug it into the back of your computer and start transferring songs right away. Now, let’s say your computer does not recognize it. What do you do then? Well, let's defer throwing it against the wall for now and try some basic troubleshooting steps! The three most common ways to troubleshoot for devices like this are:

  • Unplug the device and plug it back in.

  • Restart your computer (with and without the device).

  • See if an older device works. (For example, if you're trying to plug in a new MP3 player, try an old MP3 player. If you're using a new flash drive, try an old flash drive and so on).

I don’t know about you, but these steps seem fairly easy to me. Of course, you can always call the technical support hotline, but who wants to do that if you can fix it yourself?! So, let's get started. If an old plug and play device still works, it's likely that your computer has mistaken the new device for the old one (a more formal term is device driver conflict).

To fix that, you need to uninstall the old device driver and any other drivers that could possibly cause conflict with your new MP3 player. For that, you need your device manager. Now, configuring the device manager requires Administrator rights, so if you don’t have those enabled, this will not work. When you're ready, continue on!

1.) Click on the Start menu and choose Run.

2.) Type in “cmd” (without the quotes) and click OK. A new window will then show up, which is the good ol’ DOS command prompt window. It looks like this:

3.) Next, type in “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1” (without the quotes) and press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Note: Nothing will really happen, but you will see the command prompt again. That’s okay!

4.) Now, type in “devmgmt.msc” (without the quotes) and press the Enter key. Nothing will happen in the command prompt window, but the device manager window will appear. Click the X button to close the command prompt window.

5.) Next, click on View and choose Show Hidden Devices. This will display previously installed devices that are not connected to your computer, otherwise known as “ghost” devices.

Now, I want you to pause, smile and congratulate yourself, because we are about to get a little more serious!

Caution: Be careful with this next section. You should note that non-loaded devices, drivers and services are "grayed" out, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should delete all of them. Only remove the items you know you don't need. Also, be careful that you don't change too many devices or you might need to reactivate your Windows installation. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, please find some help!

When you're ready, click on the plus (+) signs to expand the device list. Staying with our example, we can safely uninstall the old MP3 device driver and the other ghost USB devices since we don’t need them.

We can also safely uninstall the ghost unknown devices listed under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section, because they are not connected and their drivers have not been loaded properly.

When you’re done, just click on the X button to close the device manager. Then restart your computer and voila! Your computer should now recognize your new MP3 device. In the event that it still doesn't, there are many other factors to consider, which I may just cover in future articles. Until then, you can refer to your user manual for some additional help. I hope this tip has helped a lot of you get your new devices up and running. Have fun!

Today's Feature

A Must See: New Camera Features

As we all know, the speed of technology these days is lightning fast. It seems as if what you buy today becomes obsolete the next, which is why it’s important to update yourself on the newest features available for digital cameras before you think of upgrading or buying a new one. Here are some of the new features you should look out for before you zero in on any one digicam!

Pixels Don’t Really Rule

Unlike the days of yore when you couldn't fathom buying a camera above 3 megapixels, because the prices were outrageous, now you can! But then again, you need to ask yourself how high is too high? Should you go for a 5 megapixel or an 8? Experts will tell you that any 3.2 megapixel camera will give you crystal clear images that can be blown up to almost three feet. If you want to blow up your pictures even more, a 5 megapixel camera should do, because pixels are nothing more than an opportunity to blow up your picture size. Then again, if you use compact cameras that have small sensors, but offer many megapixels, there is a definite loss in picture quality. It gets even worse if you take images at a higher ISO level in low-light conditions. So, what I'm saying is, don't let megapixels be the only criteria for you to determine which camera to buy.

Zoom In

The zoom feature is largely ignored, but it's very important. With a zoom function, it saves you from having to crop things out of your pictures. Similarly, it saves you footwork, because you don’t have to move back and forth while taking a picture. Therefore, the higher the zoom, the more room for angling your shot. Most cameras come with a 3X zoom, but now, there are several cameras where the standard is a 4X zoom and they are available at the same price. So, I say go for it! If you love your zoom, there are super zoom lenses that can magnify up to 25 times and more. However, just remember to use the zoom lens only when the lighting is good. If you zoom in low-light conditions, your pictures could be under exposed. Some cameras even come with an optical zoom that stretches the maximum zoom range, without losing the picture quality.

Wide, Wide World

What was once the preserve of a professional photographer is now within the reach of an amateur photographer! There are several cameras that offer a great wide angle feature, without having to buy a stand-alone wide angle lens. This helps a great deal, because some wide angle lenses cost as much as a camera itself. Given a choice, go for at least a 28mm wide zoom. That size is great for group photography and shooting panorama pictures and landscapes.

Anti-blur Feature

This comes in handy particularly in low-light conditions and when you are taking pictures without a tripod or any stable platform. Essentially, this feature prevents blurring of images that result due to camera shake. Though most brands offer the image stabilization feature, it’s best to check them out before buying, because each brand has its own quality measure.

ISO Levels

The ISO level partly determines your level of success in low-light photography. The higher the ISO level, the better your photo will turn out, without the help of a flash. What it does is increase the sensitivity of the lens to the existing light and it captures as much detail. Of course, you should avoid using the highest ISO level, because it could lead to a lot of graininess in your pictures. Technically, cameras higher than 6 megapixels do not give better results with a higher ISO than those under the 6 megapixel range.

Ability to Detect Faces

This comes in handy particularly in group photos, where everyone is at a different distance from the camera lens. Traditional cameras aren’t able to detect all the faces in a picture and thereby, adjust their focal length to each. But now, manufacturers, like Canon, have pioneered face detection technology, which has led many more brands to provide the same. This helps in getting crystal clear images of all the faces in a picture and not just the person in the center of the frame. This feature controls the exposure to the lens and it synchronizes the flash accordingly for a more balanced output.

Red-eye Removal Feature

Photoshop should be your last resort when it comes to removing red-eye from your subject’s eyes during night shooting. Several cameras now come with a ready-made feature that avoids red-eye by throwing a pre-flash light at you so that your pupil constricts before the actual flash. While some cameras do it brilliantly, others do not. The best way to find out is to try flash photography of a person indoors and judge it for yourself.

Candle Light Mode

Look for additional scene modes not found in an ordinary digital camera. One of these is the "candle light" mode, which allows you to take pictures of anything where the lighting is nothing more than a candle light. This works well if you use a tripod and have to make do with limited lighting. All in all, it’s an effective mode.

In-Camera Panorama Picture Stitching

While most cameras have a panorama mode, they don’t allow you to stitch two pictures inside the camera itself. You have to do that in Photoshop later on. Well, not anymore! Newer cameras can stitch together two pictures taken in the "panorama" mode to give a seamless feel of a rectangular photo. It looks awesome and it saves you the bother of Photoshop!

These are only a few of the extra features found in some of today’s digital cameras. I advise you to ask your vendor to show you extra features that most cameras don’t have and then be sure to test them before you buy.

Happy shopping!

Amanda's Coolsite

The World’s Healthiest Foods

One of the top New Year’s resolutions every year is to eat healthier and on this Web site, you can discover the World’s Healthiest Foods! Not only will you learn about healthy foods, but you will also get great advice on how to prepare them, as well as, recipes to try with them.

Each week, a different healthy food is highlighted. While I was visiting, the highlighted food was winter squash. You will find the featured food on the left side of the page. There you will find some brief information about it, as well as, some nutritional information, along with links to more information about it. I didn’t know winter squash could be steamed in just seven minutes or what to do with it in a meal. But now, I have some great ideas and I can’t wait to try them!

One of the things I really loved about this site is the Free Food Advisor. You’ll find that on the main section of the page. Just scroll down a bit and you'll find it. The Food Advisor helps you find the foods that are right for you. Just fill out the About Me section, fill out what you eat and then click the Submit for Analysis button. Make sure you check the Terms of Agreement button or it will not work.

When the analysis is complete, you will receive your results based on what you entered. The results fall into three categories: red, yellow and green. If something is in the red (I had a ton of things in the red, because I’m a very picky eater), that's an area where you need to make some changes. I learned that I don’t get enough Calcium, Vitamin E, B12, B3, B6, D or Iron. And that’s just listing a few! It’s really shocking to find out that even when you think you’re eating healthy, you could be missing vital nutrients. Thank goodness I take my vitamins!

Not only does this site tell you what you’re missing from your diet, but it tell you what foods can help you and it provide some recipes for you! Of course, it is based on the 125 nutrient dense foods in their database, so you may be eating the nutrients you need from other foods or getting them from your daily vitamins. I still think it was an awesome eye opener for me though!

Also, on the main section of the site, you’ll see a three minute cooking lesson. When I was there, it was cubed butternut squash. The lesson opens in another window and it provides both directions and a demonstration with pictures.

Oh, and before I forget, they also have a free newsletter you can have delivered to your Inbox weekly or a daily recipe and food tip newsletter. Just type in your e-mail address and click Submit to get them.

Here’s to keeping your New Year’s resolution of being healthier!

January Wallpaper

Here's January's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Zion Overlook

This was taken along a winding, twisting road in Zion National Park last summer. There are incredible views like this everywhere you turn in Zion!

Snow and  Ice Along the Tahquamenon River

This was shot a couple years ago along the Tahquamenon River in Michigan's UP. This was near the falls and the trees get caked with both ice and snow. The huge ice formations were a bonus!

Snowy Stream

This was somewhere in Michigan's UP a few years ago. We were on our way to a waterfall and this scene was just begging to be photographed!

All can be found here:
