4 Ways to Stop Procrastinating Now,

by Danek S. Kaus

How would your life change if you could just get yourself to do the things you know you should do?

Now.

If you suffer from procrastination, there is often a subconscious cause.

It can come from low self-esteem. Your inner mind doesn't think you are worthy of happiness, love, success, so it keeps you from having them by always finding a reason to put off doing important tasks.

Or, it might come from fear. Fear of change. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Yes, many people are afraid of success, even though they want it.

Sometimes it is caused by perfectionism. You feel that you must get it done perfectly, and because nobody is perfect, it's better not to start at all – until your back is up against the wall. Then you rush to get that task done, and often do it poorly. The result is, you get in trouble with your boss or lose that business opportunity. Also, stress and anxiety build up. It can cause you to worry and lose sleep.

And there are other inner blocks to creating the life you want.

Now you might ask, if procrastination is coming from my subconscious mind, how do I get that to change? There is an easy answer.

But before I get to that, here are some steps you can take until the change takes place:

Start with small bites. Another reason people don't act is that the project seems overwhelming. Say you are planning to write a long report, or a book. As you look at the task before you, the amount of work involved, it can be too daunting.

Don't look at the entire project. As the Chinese say, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

So start with a single step.

Research one piece of information you need for your report or book. Then stop. The next day, research one more. Or, if you're at the writing stage of your project, tell yourself that you will write one page, two or three, and then you will stop. Once you reach your goal, you can stop without feeling guilty. What often happens though, is that you find that you don't mind doing just a little more. Maybe a lot more.

Another way to divide up a large task it to set a specific amount of time that you will devote to the task. It could be just a few minutes, a half hour, a full hour, whatever you decide is right. Then work for that amount of time and stop, or continue. It's your choice.

Either way, if you stop at the appointed time or keep working, you will be making steady progress. The task will begin to seem smaller and less arduous because every day there will be less left to do. You will be that much closer to being finished.

I found this to be true while I was working on my latest book, "You Can Be Famous: Insider Secrets to Getting Free Publicity." (Release -- May 2008) The closer I got to finishing, the more I did. I wrote more pages every day because I realized that the end was near. I was excited and motivated to feel that sense of accomplishment. I also thought about the benefits of completing another book.

That's another way to get yourself to take action. Think about all the benefits you'll have. Imagine what it would be like to have them. What will you see, hear and feel? Really get into the experience.

Now, I said that there is an easy way to change your subconscious mind. You can do affirmations. Trouble is, you have to do a lot of them every day. You must take time out of your busy schedule to do them.

Or you can play a CD in the background that has affirmations to do it now in the background. You can play it as you work, watch TV and sleep. You don't even have to pay attention to it. Let it play in the background. The more you listen, the faster and more permanent are the results.
